More July 2015 RV Manufacturer Recalls

Your recreational vehicle may be involved in a safety recall and may create a safety risk for you or your passengers. Safety defects must be repaired by a certified dealer at no cost to you. However, if left unrepaired, a potential safety defect in your vehicle could lead to injury or even death.

What is a recall?
When a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a recreational vehicle or item of RV equipment creates an unreasonable risk to safety or fails to meet minimum safety standards, the manufacturer is required to fix that vehicle or equipment at no cost to the consumer.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced 5 recall notices involving 3 recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers— EverGreen Recreational Vehicles, Winnebago, and Newmar.

EverGreen Recreational Vehicles, LLC

evergreen3EverGreen Recreational Vehicles, LLC (EverGreen) is recalling certain model year 2015 i-Go, Ever-Lite, Sun Valley and Ascend travel trailers manufactured March 12, 2015, to May 29, 2015. In the affected trailers, the studs that are used to attach the wheels to the axle hubs may break.

If the wheel studs break, the wheel could detach from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

EverGreen will notify owners, and dealers will replace any affected wheel hub, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact EverGreen customer service at 1-574-825-4298.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

EverGreen Recreational Vehicles, LLC

evergreen3EverGreen Recreational Vehicles, LLC (EverGreen) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Lifestyle, Bay Hill, Alpha Gold and Tesla fifth wheel recreational trailers manufactured March 11, 2014, to January 23, 2015. In the affected vehicles, a rivet for the quad entry steps may shear and fail, causing the steps to give when being used.

If the rivet shears under occupant load, the steps may give and the occupant may fall, increasing the risk of personal injury.

Evergreen will notify owners, and dealers will remove the rivets and the step sections will be bolted together, free of charge.

Winnebago Industries

winnebago-quality-circle-award-255x144Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Metro Link transit buses manufactured December 20, 2013, to April 9, 2015. The affected buses may have been built without shims and flat washers on the seat pedestal, allowing the seat to detach from the floor in the event of a crash.

If the seat detaches from the floor during a vehicle crash, the seat occupant would be at an increased risk of personal injury.

Winnebago will work with Metro Worldwide, the transit bus distributor, to notify owners and remedy the vehicles, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in July 2015. Owners may contact Metro Worldwide customer service at 1-641-903-7377. Winnebago’s number for this recall is 132.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Newmar Corporation

Newmar Corp image001Newmar Corporation (Newmar) is recalling certain model year 2015 Essex and King Aire vehicles manufactured March 26, 2014, to December 4, 2014. The affected vehicles have tag axle suspension hangers that may move, allowing the tag axle assembly to shift off center.

If the tag axle moves off center, vehicle handling may suddenly be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.

Newmar has notified owners, and dealers will weld the tag axle suspension hangers to the chassis frame, free of charge. The recall began on June 22, 2015. Owners may contact Newmar customer service at 1-800-731-8300.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Newmar Corporation

Newmar Corporation (Newmar) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 King Aire and Essex vehicles manufactured from March 13, 2014, and May 13, 2015, and model year 2016 Mountain Aire vehicles manufactured from March 17, 2015, through April 17, 2015. The affected vehicles, built on a Spartan Chassis, have fasteners that attach the stay rod (v-rod) to the rear drive axle that may not have been installed with thread locker or tightened in the correct sequence.

If the fasteners loosen, the stay rod may disconnect from the rear axle, allowing the rear axle to move freely, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Spartan will notify owners on behalf of Newmar, and dealers will replace the fasteners using thread lock, tightening them in the proper sequence and with the required torque values, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 23, 2015. Owners may contact Newmar customer service at 1-800-731-8300 or Spartan customer service at 1-800-582-3454.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Back To The 60’s With Reimagined Retro RV

With a nod to the past, Winnebago’s Brave reflects the retro quality of its 1960’s predecessor, while offering today’s best innovations

Winnebago Brave in aquarius

In the late ’60s and ’70s, there was no mistaking a Winnebago motorhome. The bold Flying W and iconic “eyebrow” designs were cutting paths to fun and adventure from coast to coast. It was the coach that made America fall in love with motorhomes.

Though the days of Flower Power have long passed, Winnebago decided to revive its classic 1960’s RV with features that incorporate the technologies of today. Perhaps the peace sign is now a thumbs-up as Winnebago has joined other companies that have proven that retro can still turn heads and open pocketbooks.

From Chuck Taylor shoes to Volkswagen’s famous Beetle, Winnebago is capturing a new market by offering the timeless appeal of the past, coupled with the newest features of the present.

With retro offerings trending among younger buyers, Winnebago research indicated that their original 1960’s RV could still captivate customers in the right target markets, according to a company news release.

“The Brave is a testament to both our rich history and bright future in the motorhome lifestyle. More importantly, our sales numbers are proving that retro is still cool,” stated Randy Potts, CEO of Winnebago Industries.

“The Winnebago has been re-imagined. This is the iconic Winnebago mom and dad had, modernized. The features truly speak for themselves.”

The new Brave breathes new life into the celebrated design, giving drivers the opportunity to relive childhood memories.

Beyond its stylish appearance, the Winnebago Brave is loaded with versatile floor plans—ideal for weekend getaways or extended trips.

The Brave features a state-of-the-art sliding dash rearview monitor with Rand McNally RV GPS and a powered patio awning as well as Winnebago’s StudioLoft bedding system for added sleeping space.

Winnebago’s classic eyebrow design and “Flying W” sidewall logo earned the top award of the Recreation Vehicle Industry’s 52nd Annual Trade Show.

The Winnebago Brave and its sister, the Itasca Tribute, were given the prestigious title of “RV of the Year” by RV Business Magazine.

Winnebago offers a true sense of discovery and rediscovery with multigenerational appeal.

The Brave and Tribute retail for $96,599 to $121,379 and are available in three 26- to 31-foot floor plans on a 362-hp, V10-powered Ford chassis.

With market share of 43.2 percent in calendar 2014 in this segment, Winnebago has essentially created a new market for customers interested in compact, fuel efficient motorhomes.

“We define a compact motorhome as any Class A, B, or C product with a narrow-width body (90 inches) and is under 26 feet in length,” said Russ Garfin, Winnebago Product Manager, in a company news release.

“Essentially that comes down to new product offerings in which Winnebago has taken the lead. New chassis selections in the past decade, such as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ram ProMaster, have provided Winnebago the opportunity to create innovative new products that meet the needs of a growing customer base.”

“The compact motorhome category has grown an amazing 83.3 percent since 2006, while the motorhome industry as a whole has declined by 32.1 percent.” Garfin added.

“Our new products have really sparked a growing trend of buyers who want to enjoy the RV lifestyle, but also want an easy-to-drive, fuel-efficient and highly maneuverable full-featured motorhome.”

Insurance Company Files Suit Against Winnebago for RV Fire

An insurance company filed a grievance on behalf of its client against a recreational vehicle manufacturer for alleged liability in a 2013 incident.

InsuranceClaimProgressive Classic Insurance Company, as subrogee of Jerry Harry, of Cleveland, Ohio, brought a complaint against Winnebago Industries, of Forest City, Iowa, on March 24 in Mason Circuit Court claiming negligence in a 2013 fire in its client’s recreational vehicle, reports The West Virginia Record.

According to the filing, Jerry Harry, who is insured by the plaintiff, purchased a 2012 Winnebago Vista 35F recreational vehicle on or about January 28, 2012.

Winnebago Motorhome Passes Drop Test

With a focus on testing, Winnebago proves it’s not the size of the RV that matters.

Winnebago Motorhome Passes Drop Test
Winnebago Motorhome Passes Drop Test

America’s love affair with RVing was born from our national desire to get away from it all, but like the rest of the world, RVing has changed to reflect new technologies.

Campgrounds promote internet access. GPS navigation and back-up cameras are standard on most models. And a new breed of motorhome is starting to appear on highways and in campgrounds across the country.

Smaller and more fuel-efficient, they’re built on the Ram ProMaster chassis, new to the U.S. market, but already widely popular in Europe—so popular, in fact, that it’s the best-selling motorhome chassis in the world, according to a new Winnebago news release.

Yet despite that track record, one company needed to prove for itself that the motorhomes it built on the chassis would pass its own battery of tests.

So one cool morning last year, the first motorhome built in the United States on the Ram ProMaster chassis fell to the earth. Upside down.

In this aptly named “drop test,” Winnebago dropped the coach from three feet above the ground onto an even concrete surface. While not legally required (and not a test for safety issues), the drop test provides insight into the structural integrity of the coach, and ensures that interior fittings, like cabinetry, stay put under the test conditions. The little Trend passed.

Winnebago Motorhome Passes Drop Test
Winnebago Motorhome Passes Drop Test

Surprisingly, Winnebago is the only company that conducts these tests, states the news release. They’re part of a demanding gauntlet that also includes mandatory safety testing to assure fuel system integrity (required for vehicles under 10,000 pounds and conducted by outside professionals) as well as pull tests on seats and seat belts conducted on-site by Winnebago in its testing facility. There’s even a custom-built “shaker machine” that simulates thousands of miles of wear and tear over a period of weeks.

It takes time (and money), but the company believes it’s worth it.

“It’s in our corporate DNA to do everything we can to provide a better, safer experience for our customers,” noted CEO Randy Potts.

“As far as we know, we’re the only motorhome company that tests our products in all of these ways.”

Winnebago Motorhome Passes Drop Test

And now that they’ve arrived, these sleek new motorhomes have struck a chord with RVers, so keep an eye out for them. And the next time you’re near an RV dealer, feel free to stop in. Although the age-old drive to hit the road still powers the industry, it’s amazing to see just how far today’s motorhomes have come.

Motorized & Towable RV Sales Soar in 2014

Sales of recreational vehicles in the United States hit a low point during the recession, bottoming out in the spring of 2009 with the bankruptcy of two large motorhome manufacturers—Fleetwood Enterprises and Monaco Coach.

2015 Keystone Montana 3791RD fifth wheel
2015 Keystone Montana 3791RD fifth wheel

Yet these days, RV sales have improved along with the economy. Lower priced towables with price tags that can start at around $10,000, led the recovery. Sales of the more expensive motorized RVs, including motor \homes that can have price tags well over $500,000, caught up later.

In North America sales were running over 300,000 units a year until 2008, according to report by Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI). In 2009, sales dropped to 206,000 units. By 2013, they went back to 303,000 units. So in four years it came back 47 percent from the bottom, which is very impressive as an economic indicator.

During that time, sales of towable RVs (including folding trailers, truck campers, and travel trailers) rose 46.4 percent while sales of the more expensive motorized motorhomes (Class A, B, and C) gained 51 percent from the 2009 low.

And in 2014 motorized and towable RV sales continued to soar.

December 2014 motorhome retail registrations increased 27.4 percent compared to the same period a year ago, driving year-end totals to a 16.4 percent increase.

Worth Pondering…

RVing is great no matter what the weather. If it’s pleasant outdoors, then you can hike, swim, fish, or just hang around camp and snooze on your lawn chair. If the weather is cold and dreary, or rainy, you can simply hole up inside your little house and be as comfy as can be.

Winnebago Brave & Tribute Awarded RV of the Year

Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago Industries new retro-styled Brave and Tribute have been awarded RV Business magazine’s 2015 RV of the Year.

“I can’t think of a higher compliment than receiving this prestigious award from RV Business magazine,” said Winnebago’s Class A Gas Product Manager John Millis, in a company news release.

“We worked extremely hard as a team at Winnebago to ensure that we were both paying tribute to the fabulous design of our original motorhomes, as well as putting a lot of thought into making the Brave and Tribute a modern motorhome. That meant not only including all the features you would expect in today’s motorhomes, but also thinking outside the box to deliver features that were totally unique to the marketplace, such as the sofa in the 26A model that converts to not only a bed, but also a table, or it can fold completely out of the way against the wall for additional storage space.”

“We felt it was important to recognize authentically original thinking on this kind of a scale because Winnebago has boldly stepped into a place in terms of marketing and product design that no motorhome manufacturer has gone before,” said RVBusiness Editor Bruce Hampson. “The Brave/Tribute is a highly appealing and marketable new coach that will likely gain major traction among North American consumers before all is said and done.”

The RVBusiness article that announced the award quotes Bob Livingston, senior vice president and group publisher of Good Sam Enterprises, who recently tested a prototype 26-footer for MotorHome magazine.

“Livingston found that people off the street were following him into gas stations to get a better look at what they thought was a renovated vintage 1967 Winnebago Brave. In fact, Livingston says he never had more fun testing a unit than he did with that prototype Brave, which is only one of several reasons why RVBusiness has named this truly novel retro Winnebago Brave/Tribute motorhome RVBusiness’ “RV of the Year.”

The price-sensitive coach, retailing for $96,599 to $121,379, is available in three 26 to 31-foot floor plans on a 362-hp, V-10-powered Ford chassis.

Winnebago Brave

The new Winnebago Brave breathes new life into the legendary design, giving you the opportunity to relive your childhood memories with the next generation of young motorhome enthusiasts.

Beyond appearance, the new Brave is loaded with today’s best features and offered in two versatile floor plans fit for weekend getaways or extended trips.

January 2015 RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced seven recall notices involving seven recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers—Forest River, Lance Camper, Thor Motor Coach, Winnebago, Entegra Coach, Winnebago Towable, and Jayco.

Forest River, Inc.

forest-RiverForest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain model year 2015 Vibe VBT272BHS travel trailers manufactured July 15, 2014, to December 19, 2014. These trailers may have incorrect tire size and tire pressure information on the Federal Certification and Tire labels.

The information on the label lists the installed tires as ST225/75R15/C inflated to 50 PSI, however the tires that are actually mounted on the trailer are ST225/75R15/D inflated to 65 PSI. As such, these trailers fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, “Tire Selection and Rims and Motor Home/Recreation Vehicle Trailer Load Carrying Capacity Information for Motor Vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 Kilograms (10,000 Pounds) or Less.”

If the tires are replaced with the tires indicated on the label, the tires may be insufficient to carry the load and a tire blow out may result, increasing the risk of a crash.

Forest River will send new labels to dealers and owners with the correct tire information, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 5, 2015. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-206-593-4005. Forest River’s number for this recall is 59-12232014.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Lance Camper Manufacturing Corp.

Lance 50th anniv. logoLance Camper Manufacturing Corp. (Lance) is recalling certain model year 2015 Slide-In Campers and Travel Trailers manufactured August 1, 2014, to October 27, 2014, and equipped with certain Latitude awnings manufactured by Carefree of Colorado. The mounting brackets of the affected awnings may crack, and the awnings may fall.

If an awning falls, there is an increased risk of injury to anyone under the awning.

Lance will notify owners, and dealers will remove and replace all the mounting brackets, free of charge. This began November 26, 2014. Owners may contact Lance customer service at 1-661-949-3322.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Thor Motor Coach

thor-255x144Thor Motor Coach (TMC) is recalling certain model year 2015 Challenger, Four Winds 5000, Hurricane, Miramar, Chateau Citation, Chateau, Windsport, and Palazzo motorhomes manufactured April 24, 2014, to December 11, 2014, and equipped with certain Latitude awnings manufactured by Carefree of Colorado. The affected awnings may have screws that attach the lateral arm brackets to the mounting brackets that were not manufactured to specification.

The screws could fail, causing the supporting bracket to fail, and the awning to fall and potentially strike and injure a person beneath it.

TMC will notify owners, and dealers will remove and replace the defective screws, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 26, 2015. Owners may contact TMC customer service at 1-877-500-1020. TMC’s number for this recall is RC000097.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Winnebago Industries

winnebago-quality-circle-award-255x144Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Winnebago Trend, Travato, and Itasca Viva motorhomes manufactured November 13, 2014, to December 23, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may fail to learn the locations of the individual sensors while the vehicle is being driven. As a result, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate, despite the tire pressures being within specification. Should one of the tires lose air pressure, the driver would not be notified of the change in air pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138, “Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems.”

If the TPMS light illuminates because the sensors cannot be located, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Winnebago will have Chrysler notify owners, and dealers will update the TPMS module software, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-800-537-1885. Winnebago’s number for this recall is P62.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Entegra-Coach-Color-300x233Entegra Coach (Entegra) is recalling certain model year 2015 Aspire motorhomes manufactured July 14, 2014, to October 29, 2014, and equipped with certain Latitude awnings manufactured by Carefree of Colorado. The affected awnings may have screws that attach the lateral arm brackets to the mounting brackets that were not manufactured to specification.

The screws could fail, causing the supporting bracket to fail, and the awning to fall and potentially strike and injure a person beneath it.

Entegra will notify owners, and dealers will remove and replace the defective screws, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Entegra customer service at 1-800-945-4787.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Winnebago Towable

winnebago-quality-circle-award-255x144Winnebago Towable is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Winnebago Minnie 2201DS and 2450BHS travel trailers manufactured May 7, 2012, to November 13, 2014, and 2013-2015 Sunnybrook Remington 2200DS and 2451BHS travel trailers manufactured May 7, 2013, to November 13, 2014. The axle may contact the black liquid propane pipe fitting, resulting in the fitting cracking or breaking.

If the propane pipe fitting cracks or breaks, propane may leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Winnebago Towable will notify owners. The remedy for this recall is still under development. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Winnebago Towable customer service at 1-574-825-5250.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

As such, these trailers fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 110, “Tire Selection and Rims and Motor Home/Recreation Vehicle Trailer Load Carrying Capacity Information for Motor Vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or less.”

If the trailer tires are replaced with the ones listed incorrectly on the label, the trailer may be overloaded, resulting in poor handling or tire failure. Either of these conditions may increase the risk of a crash.

Jayco will notify owners, send them new labels with the corrected information, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in late-January 2015. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267. Jayco’s number for this recall is 9901227.
