Figures Beguile Me & Purchasing an RV

“Figures often beguile me,” Mark Twain once wrote.

And they often beguile consumers shopping for that perfect recreational vehicle.

Prospective owners of the latest and greatest diesel pusher motorhome, fifth wheel, travel trailer, or other recreational vehicle, are attracted to weight ratings and other specification numbers like back-to-school shoppers are to the notebooks-and-binders aisle. When you’re purchasing one the biggest assets you’ll ever own, knowledge is power.

For RV buyers wading through RV and vehicle specifications and rating terminology, numbers on top of figures layered with calculations, can be as bewildering as smoke signals or road signs in a foreign language.

How do you decipher these numbers? Which ones should you pay attention to? Which ones, if any, can you ignore?

Over the years, there have been strides made in standardizing RV vehicle weight definitions, through the efforts of the Recreational Vehicles Industry Association (RVIA), RV Dealer’s Association (RVDA), and RV Safety Education Foundation (RVSEF).

Chassis manufacturers establish weight ratings and limitations based on the major components of their systems—the engine, transmission, brakes, axles, tires, and frame. These components are designed to accommodate a particular weight, and if they are overloaded, their life expectancy diminishes rapidly and your safety may be at peril.

It is important for RV owners to understand the various weight definitions used by RV and chassis manufacturers. Of course, the final step is to have your RV weighed after you have loaded it for travel to make sure it falls within the various ratings.

Following are definitions of several commonly used weight terms that are important for consumers to understand:

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): The maximum permissible weight of the fully loaded vehicle (motorhome, fifth wheel, travel trailer, or tow vehicle), including liquids, passengers, and cargo.

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating): The maximum allowable weight each axle assembly is designed to carry, as measured at the tires, including the weight of the assembly itself. GAWR is established by considering the rating of each of its components (tires, wheels, springs, and axle) and rating the axle on its weakest link. The GAWR assumes that the load is equal on each side of the vehicle.

Note: GVWR and GAWR information can be found on the Federal Safety Compliance Label which is located on all motorized and towable RVs, as well as on tow vehicles.

GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating): The value specified by the motorhome or tow vehicle manufacturer as the maximum allowable combined weight of the motorhome/tow vehicle and any attached towed vehicle (toad) or trailer. GCWR can be found in the vehicle manufacturer’s specification information.

In June 2008, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) adopted revisions to the regulations to require separate and specific RV weight labels including the following additional key terms:

OCCC (Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity) (for Motorized RVs only): This figure states the maximum allowable weight of all occupants including the driver, plus the weight of all food, tools, full fresh water tanks, full LP-Gas tanks, and personal belongings. The maximum allowable weight of passengers is based on the number of seat belted positions in the motorized RV. The regulation also states that the “tongue weight of towed trailer counts as cargo.”

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity) (for Towable RV’s only): This figure states the maximum allowable weight of all cargo, including all food, tools, full fresh water tanks, full LP-Gas tanks, and personal belongings.

Load Carrying Capacity Reduced: The regulation also requires dealers to state on an amended or additional label the total amount (in pounds and kg) that additional options or changes to the RV have decreased the OCCC or CCC. The amount stated is limited to the total weight of all additions or changes made by the dealer ‘prior to the first sale’ that are the ‘lesser of 1.5 percent of the GVWR or 100 pounds’.

Do the math for your specific RV and tow or toad vehicle, and ensure that you know what is included (or not included) in the numbers provided by the manufacturer. The main thing is to account for all weight and weight distribution in selecting and using your RV, tow vehicle, and hitch mechanisms.

In the end, RV specifications can be confusing especially for first time buyers.

As another gem attributed to Mark Twain says: “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

And in the words of Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, “Even a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

“We are both honored and thrilled to be receiving this award. The Quality Circle Award criteria is based on sales support, sales territory, vehicle design, vehicle reliability/quality, competitive price/value, parts support, dealership warranty support, and overall dealer communication,”  said Don Clark, Grand Design’s president and co-owner.

“This very special award is a derivative from a (DSI) survey by our dealers. It’s like the ‘People’s Choice Award’ of the RV industry.  Our dealers are our life blood and to get this kind of endorsement is huge. This year’s award is also special because it is Grand Design’s very first year in business and the award is affirmation that we are headed in a positive direction.”

The Solitude luxury extended stay fifth wheel was the company’s only brand manufactured at the time of the dealer survey and it received record high scores, he explained.

“Marc Hauser, Solitude’s general manager, and his sales and design teams did a remarkable job creating the Solitude,” said Clark.

“Furthermore, our service group, headed by Jerry McCarthy (vice president of service operations), have taken awesome care of our dealers and retail customers after the sale. We could not be more pleased with the entire Grand Design team.”

The award is only given to brands that score 80 percent or more in overall dealer satisfaction.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the DSI Survey and the second year in a row that Airstream has been recognized.

For the first time, both Airstream’s trailers and motorhomes have received the award.
