Preparing the RV for Long-Term Storage

Palm City, Florida-based Shurhold Industries now offers a step-by-step guide for RV owners preparing an RV for long-term storage.

The guide covers all the bases, so a rig remains in top shape and is ready to go for the next season, according to a company news release.

All things that mold or mildew should be discarded to prevent foul smells. Owners should also get rid of all food and liquids, emptying the refrigerator.

For better airflow, cushions can be removed or propped up and storage hatches can be left open. Once the above is accomplished, the entire RV should be cleaned and vacuumed with dehumidifier bags placed throughout the cabins.

Cleaning the drains and the sump prior to storage is absolutely crucial to keep odors and bacteria from becoming a problem. The RV can absorb the odors and mildew that grow in moist, dark environments and they will spread throughout.

Shurhold products available for use in these procedures include Serious Multi-Purpose Cleaner (SMC) and Moldaway.

Moldaway can be used to clean the drains in sinks and showers with one scoop into each with a cup of water. After letting it work for a few minutes, owners can rinse it out.

Bleach-free and chlorine-free, Moldaway is an oxygenated cleaner that is safe on most

Moldaway cleans and deodorizes drains without harming the piping and also helps clean the sump container by oxygenating the sump water, killing mold/mildew spores and other bacteria, safely and without bleach. Depending on where an RV is stored, the yard may suggest flushing antifreeze through the system.

The cleaner carpets and canvas surfaces are, the better they will look when taken out of storage. Before sealing up the RV, owners should vacuum and shampoo the carpet with SMC, and let it dry. This will reduce the likelihood of any bacteria growing there. If possible, cockpit carpet should be cleared out or at least rolled up and stored in a cabin. It is best to remove canvas and store it in a dry environment. Then, owners can clean it in the spring with Moldaway or Brite Wash.

The undercarriage should be washed with a pressure washer and/or plain water with a soft-to-medium brush. Soaps and detergents are generally not used. Wax is also a good idea.

Lastly, all mechanical, electronic, and other systems should be readied for a long storage nap. Owner’s manuals must be consulted on these crucial tasks because it can affect the warranty.

Shurhold’s SMC and Brite Wash are available in 32 ounce ready to use trigger spray bottles for $11.98 each.

Moldaway is available in a 12 ounce bottles for $12.98.

Chempace Roof Shield Cleans & Protects

To meet the growing demand for RV maintenance products, Chempace has launched Roof Shield, the next generation in their lineup of maintenance products.

Chempace CorpThe initial offering of Roof Shield includes a 100-ounce RV cleaner jug and a 100-ounce RV sealer jug presented in a convenient, ready-to-use bucket with and a bonus RV holding tank drop-In sample pack.

The RV roof cleaner removes black streaks, dirt, oxidants, and road film build-up, while the RV roof sealer protects from rain, sun, grime and prevents drying, cracking, and oxidation.

Both products are environmentally safe and are should be included on the list of must-have RV maintenance items, the company noted in a press release.

“The RV roof is one of the most overlooked items on most RVers maintenance list, the company noted. Yet, the roof represents a valuable investment and can result in hundreds to thousands in repair or replacement costs if left unattended. Utilizing Chempace’s new Roof Shield is an essential step to guarantee the long life of an RV investment,” said Rick Shall, Chempace CEO.

“The RV roof is often dreaded and the lack of maintenance is justified because it is not in plain sight,” he added.

“No longer does cleaning your RV roof have to be difficult or time consuming with Roof Shield it makes it easier to protect your roof—beginning with the included pail.”

Rubber and TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin single-ply roofing membranes) roofs are most susceptible to damage, and any roof left unattended will deteriorate and leak over time, said Shall.

Roof Shield RV Cleaner and RV Sealer work together to create a barrier between the roof and the elements to increase the overall protection from the elements and the sun’s UV rays while leaving the roof surface with easier to clean properties in the future, he explained.

Most rubber roofs are white in color for aesthetic purposes, but most importantly because white reflects sunlight and heat more efficiently than darker colors.

“The down side of white is it will never reach beyond 126 degrees, which is not hot enough to kill mold and mildew growth,” Shall explained.

“Variations in climate and weather may accelerate fungal growth and it is highly recommended to be cleaned at minimum four times a year depending on where you park or store your RV; followed by sweeping debris from the roof every week or two.”

Black and gray are the most common colors of mold and mildew stains, and are usually seen in small clusters, he added. But, in extreme cases, fungi can cover the entire RV roof and appear in other colors like yellow, purple, or pink.

According to Dr. Virginia Peart and Dr. James Kimbrough, of the University of Florida, they developed the “mildew square” to demonstrate that all fungi needs four elements to grow and thrive. They are spores, food source, temperature, and moisture. Of these, moisture and the food source is the most preventable component, Shall noted.

“It is preferable to sweep, instead of wash the RV roof, because simply rinsing the roof with water only leaves more moisture behind, which is one of the four elements in the mildew square,” he explained.

“Whereas, sweeping removes several of the conditions and requires less time to complete.

“We are constantly reviewing our products in line with the feedback received from our RV dealers and their RV customers,” said Shall.

“Chempace’s adapt our products to meet the growing appeal for the RV lifestyle which peaked this year at 8.9 million RVers.”

The brand and the technology behind it have been proven again and again. Unlike most dehumidifying products on the market that require refilling with salt-based absorbing agents, Pingi never requires refilling.

Furthermore, the active contents of Pingi products are Silica Gel, which is harmless to humans and the environment. Pingi products can be discarded in landfills, having no more negative effects on the environment than sand. On the other hand, salt-based products are not recommended for disposal in public landfills as the salt can seep into underground water tables.

Dry Your World with ProDriPole

ProDriPole is designed to maximize the removal of excess moisture from the air.

New to the retail market in 2012, the ProDriPole is a technically advanced moisture absorber ideal for use in recreational vehicles, holiday homes, and boat cabins, especially during winter storage.

It can also be used in storage areas holding valuable items, such as classic cars, and in the home, in problem areas or during periods of renovation.

Excess moisture can result in damp and condensation, leading to mildew and mould growth and that recognizable musty smell. The ProDriPole allows you to prevent damp and condensation related problems in a convenient and effective manner.

The ProDriPole lasts for up to six months, depending on surrounding conditions, compared to other moisture absorbing systems which may only last between two and three months, according to a news release.

The number of poles required varies according to application; guidance can be found on the website given below.

To use simply remove ProDriPole moisture absorber from its packaging and use the hook provided to hang it in the area you want to protect from damp.

ProDriPole contains 1kg (2.4 pounds) of anhydrous calcium chloride flakes, which are very effective for humidity control. This means there is no water already attached to the calcium chloride, meaning it has maximum absorption potential.

Each calcium chloride molecule can absorb six molecules of water before the flake turns into a liquid. Even in this liquid state, the calcium chloride continues to absorb moisture from the air until it finally drips through to the bottom part of ProDriPole where it is stored.

As the liquid drips through, you will be able to see it build up in the bottom part of the moisture absorber.

Simply leave ProDriPole in place until the liquid level reaches the join between the top and bottom part of the pole. Then dispose of and replace with a new pole.

ProDriPole uses a specially developed, breathable laminate which allows moisture vapor in. However, once the moisture vapor is in, it is trapped in ProDriPole and neither moisture vapor nor liquid can escape back into the atmosphere. ProDriPole is a completely sealed unit.

A single pole starts at £22.00 (US$34.00) and is currently available for purchase.

ProDriPole is 75cm (29.5 inches) tall, 11.5cm (4.5 inches) wide and 4.7cm (1.8 inches) deep.

Currently there is only one size of ProDriPole available.

ProDriPole is part of Protective Packaging Limited, set up to serve the retail market and individual customers who want to prevent damp problems in various applications, such as caravans, boats, or problem areas in the house.
