Worth Pondering…

The RV lifestyle is like nothing else.

It’s leaving home, exploring America, and yet bringing your home along with you!

Stopping at a wayside picnic area, preparing lunch in your kitchen.

It’s sleeping in your own bed every night, yet waking up to a new vista each morning!

The sounds of a crackling campfire; of a mountain stream, of frogs, and crickets.

It’s families drawn closer; it’s retirees being rewarded for many years of labor.

AMP Acquires Workhorse from Navistar

Cincinnati-based AMP Holding Inc., through a newly formed subsidiary, Amp Truck Inc., has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Workhorse brand, logo, IP, patents, and assembly plant from Workhorse Custom Chassis LLC, a wholly owned affiliate of Navistar International Corp.

workhorseWorkhorse was the first chassis manufacturer to design and build a chassis specifically for the Class A Gas motor home market.

AMP plans to produce step-vans and other vehicle types using the former Workhorse Custom Chassis plant in Union City, Indiana, according to a news release.

The parties expect to close the acquisition on or about March 13.

A specific timetable to re-open the Workhorse plant will be announced as the transition occurs and order backlogs are established.

With this acquisition AMP will be positioned to be the first truck OEM in the United States to offer a range of alternative fuel vehicles produced in an automated assembly plant.

By offering an all-electric Workhorse chassis along with gasoline powered, and alternative-fuel powered models, AMP will become a premier OEM capable of building alternative fuel vehicles for the commercial market.

AMP’s vehicles will be sold and supported through the existing Workhorse network of 440 dealers.

“Our acquisition of the Workhorse assets will enable us to continue producing the premium-quality chassis that Workhorse is known for while giving us the perfect platform for our battery-electric power-train technology,” said Steve Burns, CEO of AMP.

“It makes good strategic sense for us and we expect to be well positioned to meet the ever increasing demands of the market.”

February RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced five recall notices involving four recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers—Entegra Coach, Navistar, Dutchmen Manufacturing, and Forest River.

Entegra Coach

Entegra-Coach-Color-300x233Middlebury, Indiana-based Entegra Coach is recalling 37 model year 2013 Aspire Class A motorhomes manufactured April 11, 2012, through August 30, 2012. On the affected vehicles, the Certification label incorrectly identifies the size of the tires on the rear axles. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120, “Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles Other Than Passenger Cars.”

An inaccurate label could lead to installation of improper replacement tires which may cause vehicle overloading which could lead to a tire failure resulting in personal injury or property damage.

Entegra Coach will notify owners and dealers will replace the Certification label. The recall is expected to begin during January 2013.

Owners may contact Entegra Coach at 1-800-945-4787.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Navistar, Inc.

navistar+logoLisle, Illinois-based Navistar, Inc. is recalling 7,657 model year 2012-2013 IC Bus brand model 1300FBC, CE, HC, and RE buses; model year 2011-2013 International brand model Durastar, model year 2013 International brand Workstar trucks; model year 2013 Holiday Rambler brand model Ambassador and Endeavor vehicles; and model year 2013 Monaco brand model Diplomat and Knight vehicles.

These vehicles were manufactured August 5, 2010 through September 6, 2012 and are equipped with certain 2011-2013 model year I-6 engines with feature codes 12NUK, 12NUL, 12NUM, 12NUN, 12NUP, 12NUR, 12NUS, 12NUT, 12NUU, 12NUV, 12NUX, 12NUY and 12NUZ.

The injection pressure regulator (IPR) harness wire may break due to vibrational damage. This could cause an unexpected shut down of the engine.

An unexpected engine shut down while driving may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the IPR wire connector free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin by March 18, 2013. Owners may contact Navistar at 1-800-448-7825.

Navistar’s recall campaign number is 13501.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Dutchmen Manufacturing, Inc.

DutchmanGoshen, Indiana-based Dutchmen Manufacturing, Inc. is recalling 698 model year 2007-2011 Grand Junction; model year 2008-2009 Victory Lane and Winners Circle; model year 2009-2010 N’Tense; model year 2010 Freedom Spirit, and model year 2009 Monte Vista recreational trailers.

The affected trailers are equipped with Iota ITS-50R transfer switches. Wiring connections inside the transfer switch are not adequate and, as a result, the switch may overheat.

An overheated switch could result in a fire.

Dutchmen will notify owners and replace the Iota transfer switch, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin in February 2013. Owners may contact Dutchmen at 1-574-537-0700.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Entegra Coach

Entegra-Coach-Color-300x233Middlebury, Indiana-based Entegra Coach is recalling 359 model year 2011-2013 Aspire and Anthem Class A motorhomes and 2012-2013 Cornerstone Class A motorhomes, manufactured March 14,2011, through September 25, 2012. A wiper link was installed which is shorter than required for proper function of the wiper system.

The wipers may not operate as designed and the driver’s visibility can be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

Entegra Coach will notify owners and dealers will replace the wiper link, at no charge. The recall is expected to begin during February 2013. Owners may contact Entegra Coach at 1-800-945-4787.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Forest River, Inc.

forest-RiverElkhart, Indiana-based Forest River, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013 Concord, Leprechaun, Freelander, Lexington, Forester, and Sunseeker Class B and Class C motorhomes built on Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana chassis.

It may be possible to remove the key from the ignition when the vehicle is running or the transmission is not in the park position. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 114, “Theft Protection.”

If the ignition key is removed while the vehicle is still on and/or the vehicle is not in park, the vehicle may roll away and the unintended movement of the vehicle may result in a possible crash or injury to pedestrians.

General Motors (GM) will notify owners on behalf of Forest River. GM dealers will replace the ignition lock cylinder and the two associated keys. This service will be performed free of charge. The recall will begin in February 2013.

For more information, GMC owners may call 1-866-996-9463 and Chevrolet owners may call 1-800-630-2438. Owners may also contact Forest River at 1-574-389-4600.

Sale of Navistar RV “Is a Possibility”

Lisle, Illinois-based Navistar International Corp., a producer of school buses, commercial trucks, defense vehicles, and recreational vehicles is evaluating the long-term profitability of several divisions, including its RV operations based in Wakarusa, Indiana.

Holiday Rambler
Holiday Rambler

The sale of the RV business is a possibility, according to a Navistar International Corp. news release.

Navistar is conducting a comprehensive review of all of our non-core businesses—including our Navistar RV business—to evaluate their potential to drive long-term profitability and significantly improve our return on invested capital (ROIC).

As a result of our ROIC analysis, Navistar is listening to offers for the sale of its RV business and the sale of the business is a possibility. However, we are still early on in that process and have not accepted any offers at this time.

We are not in a position that we ‘have to’ sell the business. We have a credible turnaround plan for the RV business underway and sufficient cash to continue funding operations, so we have the option to reject any offers that don’t add value.

In 2008, Monaco Coach Corp. laid off nearly 1,500 people and filed for bankruptcy. Then Navistar International Corp. acquired Monaco Coach in 2009. When Navistar acquired Monaco, there were only 20 employees left.

In August 2011, Monaco decided to consolidate its Oregon factory with the factory in Wakarusa. That brought about 400 new jobs to Elkhart County. There are currently about 600 workers between the Elkhart and Wakarusa plants.

Monaco, Holiday Rambler, and R-Vision have been part of the Navistar family of brands for the last four years.

Since the acquisition, the company has streamlined operations and appointed a new executive management team. Navistar has also fully integrated the design, development, testing, and validation of its recreational vehicles with the company’s commercial truck and bus product development organization, delivering vehicle engineering expertise unmatched in the RV industry.

In August 2012 Navistar International announced a name change from Monaco RV LLC to Navistar RV, “the natural next step in Navistar’s commitment to the business.”

“The integration of Navistar and Monaco RV has resulted in better products and higher efficiencies,” said Daniel Ustian, Navistar chairman, president and chief executive officer in a company news release.

“Updating the name of our RV company demonstrates our long-term commitment to the RV industry. When a customer buys a recreational vehicle built by Navistar RV, they know they’re getting products with proven components, many of which are used in other Navistar vehicles — vehicles that move American goods, help keep troops safe, and ensure the safe transportation of schoolchildren.”

Holiday Rambler Marks 60th Anniversary

Lisle, Illinois-based Navistar RV, a subsidiary of Navistar International Corp., marked the 60th anniversary of its Holiday Rambler brand at the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association’s (RVIA) 50th annual National RV Trade Show, November 27-29 at the Kentucky Expo Center, Louisville, Kentucky.

The company introduced three model-year 2014 vehicles. The new Presidential will reestablish Holiday Rambler’s presence in the luxury fifth-wheel category while the company will continue to build and sell motorhomes with the reintroduction of its Augusta Class C B-plus style coach and the new Vacationer, an entry-level class A gas coach, according to a news release.

“We are very pleased to mark the 60th anniversary of Holiday Rambler, a preeminent brand in the history of recreational vehicles,” said Bill Osborne, president, Navistar RV.

“Throughout its long life, Holiday Rambler’s success has been fueled by its pioneering spirit, including countless innovations that helped create a new way for families to go exploring and enjoy a rich, rewarding life.”

Holiday Rambler travel trailer 1954

The first Holiday Rambler was a travel trailer introduced to the public in 1953.

In 1961, the brand’s introduction of aluminum body framing ushered in an era of lighter, stronger, and more durable RVs. Alumaframe became the standard for RVs for 40 years.

Holiday Rambler was also responsible for many firsts, including built-in refrigerators, holding tanks and aerodynamic radiused corners.

As Holiday Rambler moved into motorhomes, it was the first with tag axles, and its kitchen slide out revolutionized interior engineering in the field.

Holiday Rambler was sold to the Monaco Coach Corp. in 1996.

Navistar, Inc., a producer of school buses, commercial trucks, and defense vehicles, acquired Monaco RV in 2009.

“While we are proud of Holiday Rambler’s rich history, we aren’t stuck in it,” Osborne added. “We continue to introduce new designs, exciting new options and features, and wonderfully realized floor plans that can accommodate the changing needs of consumers.”

The new Presidential is a maneuverable and roomy fifth wheel that offers the appointments of a luxury motorized RV. A wide-body design, combined with a unique chassis platform, provides industry-leading exterior storage with both front and rear pass-through storage. Premium construction methodologies include a 100 percent gel-coat exterior (no metal skirt), thicker laminated walls, composite structure panels, frameless windows, and arched roof trusses.

Notable interior features include Lane-brand leather furniture, a fireplace, and pull-out desk, flat screen TVs in the living room and bedroom, a walk-in shower and tiered bathroom vanity with vessel sink, and available dishwasher and stack washer/dryer. Storage is plentiful, with a full-size pantry, and custom dinnerware, and glassware drawers.

The new Vacationer SE offers customers the high-end features of a diesel coach — Smart Structure chassis system, ergonomically designed cockpit, soft-touch ceiling, and generous pass-through storage — at the lower price of a gas vehicle. The new Augusta is a maneuverable and compact motorized RV with maximum space and inventive design features including a Murphy bed folds away to allow for a larger living area.

Holiday Rambler Presidential fifth-wheel

“These new vehicles are proof positive that Holiday Rambler continues to expand its product line and create models that aim at fulfilling the needs that are seen amongst today’s RV consumer community,” said Osborne.

Navistar Ends Sponsorship of LPGA Classic

The future of Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) golf tournament at the Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail in Prattville, Alabama is at risk after title sponsor Navistar withdrew from the event.

The golf event has been held at the Senator Course at the RTJ Capitol Hill facility from 2007-12.

“Navistar has been proud to be the lead sponsor of the Navistar LPGA Classic for the last six years and we’ve maintained a strong relationship with both the LPGA and the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail,” Navistar spokesman Stephen Schrier said in a news release.

“However, our current business climate requires a reduction of our sponsorship activities, including our sponsorship of the Navistar LPGA Classic.”

Stacy Lewis, who this year became the first American to win the LPGA’s Player of the Award since 1994, won this year’s tournament in September by two shots over teen-ager Lexi Thompson.

According to LPGA Chief Communications Officer Kraig Kann, the LPGA is working on continuing the event in Prattville in 2013.

“The LPGA appreciates and applauds all that Navistar has done to support the Tour and Alabama. While they won’t return to partner with us in 2013, to say that the LPGA, the Robert Trent Jones Trail, and RSA won’t return to Prattville next year is premature, stated Kann.

“We’re all committed to continuing the tradition of women’s professional golf in Alabama and the city of Prattville and are working together to deliver on those goals in 2013.”

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill, site of LPGA Classic

The SunBelt Golf Corporation and the Robert Trent Golf Trail is in search of a new event sponsor.

Jonathan Romeo, tournament sponsor and SunBelt Golf Corporation Director of Business Development, is in Florida for the LPGA annual tournament owners and director’s meeting.

When asked recently what type of sponsors they might be looking at, Romeo stated, “The LPGA is a world brand and it takes a world company to get the benefit of everything and there are a lot of those here.”

“We are working on a daily basis with the LPGA and with business in the state of Alabama and have for 12 years in a row,” said John Cannon, Sunbelt Golf Corporation President.

“We are working on these events and actually pursuing a new title sponsor and committed, if possible, to continue doing an LPGA event both in Mobile and Prattville.

“We can’t do it ourselves. It requires community and business involvement to make it happen.”

When asked what the deadline would be to have a title sponsor for an event to played in 2013, Cannon indicated that you would get a different answer depending on who you asked.

“In an ideal world, the LPGA would like some answers now,” Cannon said.

The LPGA traditionally announces its partial or full event schedule for the upcoming year in November.

The SunBelt Corporation said it is committed to pro golf in the state but would not rush into anything moving forward.

“We’re not going to jump into a commitment without knowing we can accomplish it and do the event the way we have done it,” Cannon said.

“It’s an expensive proposition. We are working with third parties and groups that have not done something with us.”

Runner up in 2012, Lexi Thompson won the title in 2011

Romeo said the event costs about $3.5 to $4 million annually. According to a study conducted by the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce, the event has a $7 million impact on the region.

Navistar Moving Past Emissions Debacle

Navistar International Corp. won’t apply SCR to its 15-litre MaxxForce engine and will instead lean on Cummins Inc. for its high-horsepower requirements, Jim Hebe, senior vice-president of North American sales operations confirmed during a press briefing.

It’s the first official confirmation that the company won’t pursue its own 15L engine once it uses up its remaining emissions credits and can no longer pay non-conformance penalties for engines that don’t meet EPA2010 emissions standards, Truck News reports.

“Our intention is to continue to build them as long as we can and then phase into the Cummins ISX15,” said Hebe.

“It’s a shame, it’s a great engine.”

Hebe said anticipated demand for the 15-litre MaxxForce would not support the cost of further developing the engine and applying SCR exhaust after treatment to it.

International will focus on its higher volume MaxxForce 13 engine, which will combine selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust after treatment with Navistar’s in-cylinder solution to form what it has dubbed In-Cylinder Technology Plus (ICT+).

Officials indicated Navistar is already building International trucks with Cummins engines—about 300 ProStar+s to date—and that the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two companies will soon become an official supply agreement.

Navistar emerges from emissions struggle

Hebe provided some insight into what went wrong with Navistar’s EGR-only emissions strategy. He still believes pursuing a non-SCR emissions solution was the right call, however he admitted it was a mistake for the company to put all its eggs in one basket.

“Two decisions were made in this company in August 2008,” Hebe said.

“One was to go EGR and the other was to go it alone. The decision to go with EGR was not the wrong decision, but the decision to go it alone was the wrong decision. What really, in the end, created the biggest issue was not EGR, it was that we ran out of time and we ran out of credits. If we had stuck with a partner in the engine business, we would have had more time to develop our in-cylinder solution and probably at the end of the day, we would’ve gotten that. That’s water over the dam now.”

“We’re headed in the right direction, with the right strategy in terms of engines,” Hebe said.

“They’re (dealers) confident in the financial position of the company and these guys are willing to do whatever it takes to help this company be successful.”

When asked by Truck News how the manufacturer will stay cost-competitive, having absorbed the cost of researching, developing and implementing two very costly technologies (advanced-EGR and now SCR), Hebe admitted it will be a concern for Navistar in the near term but emphasized the costs won’t be passed onto customers.

Within about two years, Hebe said, many of the costlier components of the company’s advanced-EGR system can be removed from the equation.

“Theoretically, we should be able to eliminate some of the costs incurred in the engine technology when we go to SCR,” Hebe explained.

“A lot of the stuff that was instrumental in advanced-EGR will go away. For the first year, we’ll be challenged and our customers are not going to bear the cost of that. Our intent is to do what we have to do to keep ourselves competitive in the marketplace until we can eliminate a lot of the expensive componentry required for advanced-EGR.”

Workhorse to Cease Operation in October

Lisle, Illinois-based Workhorse Custom Chassis is going out of business and is due to shut down in October, though Navistar International Corp., its owner since 2005, is saying little about it.

Spokesman Steve Schrier confirmed the news and responded to questions by referring to statements in the company’s recent 10Q disclosures to the federal Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), reports Truckinginfo.com.

Workhorse stopped making its W42 and W62 van chassis early this year, one competitor said, and final production is apparently imminent of motorhome chassis. Production should wrap up this month, a worker at the plant in Union City, Indiana, said before directing further questions to Navistar headquarters.

However, Navistar’s eStar electric van, though managerially connected to Workhorse, remains an active product, Schrier said. Introduced in 2009 with the help of a federal grant, eStar captured early sales from several customers for use in California, which encourages use of zero-emissions vehicles with its own grants.

Nonetheless, “the commercial viability of electric vehicles is what drives sales in this market,” Schrier said.

With no engine or conventional drivetrain and the comparative simplicity of electric components, maintenance and operating costs are very low, even if purchase prices are high.

And although A123 Systems, which supplies batteries for the eStar and other electric vans, has been struggling financially and currently is the subject of a controversial investment proposal from a Chinese firm, “individual suppliers are not impacting our eStar business,” Schrier said. About 100 were built at the Navistar-Monaco plant in Wakarusa, Indiana, last year.

Workhorse was started in 1998 by investors who took over production and sales of General Motors’ popular P-series Stepvan chassis when GM dropped it, Truckinginfo.com reports.

GM gasoline and diesel engines powered vehicles which, like competitors’ chassis, got bodies from outside suppliers. Large delivery fleets like FedEx, UPS, and Frito-Lay were among its customers.

Navistar acquired Workhorse seven years ago and it seemed a good fit, as Navistar diesels would find another outlet, even if emphasis was still on gasoline.

It also seemed that the new subsidiary might be strengthened through its association with a big corporation whose history from the 1930s into the ’60s included the popular Metro van.

For a short time Workhorse offered an integrated chassis-body product called MetroStar.

The Great Recession a few years later hurt both parties, and Navistar executives’ losing bet on their non-SCR “in-cylinder solution” to diesel emissions limits contributed to heavy financial losses. These prompted serious cost-cutting.

Two financial reviews showed that Workhorse could not recover investments in it, the 10Q statement said. So earlier this year Navistar ordered Workhorse to stop accepting orders for W-series chassis and to begin to “idle” the business. It has taken a $10 million charge as part of shutdown expenses.

Workhorse R Series Diesel Chassis

Schrier said Navistar would continue to provide warranty and parts and service support for existing Workhorse chassis.

Executives at Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. (FCCC), a major competitor, said one result of Workhorse’s closure has been more interest from customers in gasoline power, something Workhorse specialized in.

FCCC last year began offering General Motors’ 6-liter Vortec 6000 gasoline V-8, the same engine that Workhorse used toward the end.

Until late last week, Navistar’s website listed Workhorse as one of its truck brands and offered a link to the Workhorse site. A newly redesigned website now lists only International and Mahindra International as Navistar’s truck brands.

But Workhorse’s site as of this writing is still active and describes the W series commercial and motorhome chassis, and gives no hint of their demise.

Navistar LPGA Classic Goes Ahead as Scheduled

Navistar LPGA Classic will go ahead as scheduled—from September 20-23 in Prattville, Alabama—despite a shakeup in the Navistar management.

The news of shakeup in the Navistar’s upper management triggered concerns of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) officials and players as they wondered what impact the management shakeup would have on one of the most prestigious LPGA tournaments, bettor.com reported.

Now that the company has undergone the change in senior management, the LPGA officials are keen to announce that the Navistar LPGA Classic will not be hurt, and it will be held according to its schedule.

Although players are happy to see the tournament’s schedule intact, the Navistar officials said that they will definitely be coming up with new plans regarding the sponsorship of the LPGA event for the future.

Navistar, which has been operating for years and boasts a massive presence in the market, was troubled by its engine strategy that put a drag on the company’s profitability.

Under pressure due to failure of the engine strategy, the CEO Daniel Ustian announced his immediate retirement.

Despite being hit by operational issues, the Navistar management responded quickly to the growing concerns of LPGA stars and officials, saying the tournament will remain intact.

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill, site of Navistar LPGA Classic

However, the company’s officials did not tell what they plan to do about the future events of the tournament.

Steve Schrier, a spokesman for the Navistar, said the company’s officials are glad that they are going to stage another edition of the tournament and hope for the best.

“Dan Ustian’s retirement from Navistar will have no impact on our plans for this year’s Navistar LPGA Classic and we look forward to another great event in September,” Schrier said.

“We are currently re-evaluating all of our sponsorship initiatives, including our investment in the LPGA. We have developed a long-standing partnership with the LPGA and the team at (the) Robert Trent Jones (golf course) and we will provide clarity on future commitments later this year.”

The spokesman pointed out that the company wants to stick to Prattville in future as well, as most of the LPGA stars like the course.

Monaco RV Changes Name to Navistar RV

Lisle, Illinois-based Monaco RV LLC announces that it is changing its name to Navistar RV.

Monaco, Holiday Rambler, and R-Vision brands will remain “distinct and intact” under the Navistar RV subsidiary of Navistar Inc., according to a company news release.

“The integration of Navistar and Monaco RV has resulted in better products and higher efficiencies,” said Daniel Ustian, Navistar chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Navistar, Inc., a producer of school buses, commercial trucks, and defense vehicles, acquired Monaco RV in 2009.

Monaco, Holiday Rambler, and R-Vision have been part of the Navistar family of brands for the last three years and the name change is the natural next step in Navistar’s commitment to the business.

Navistar RV maintains manufacturing operations for its R-Vision and Holiday Rambler towable units in Harrisburg, Oregon and Elkhart, Indiana. The company’s Monaco and Holiday Rambler brand motorized RVs are produced in a fully integrated manufacturing facility located in Wakarusa, Indiana with power train, chassis, and body assembly in one dedicated facility.

“Navistar brings more than 100 years of vehicle development and design experience to the Monaco, Holiday Rambler, and R-Vision brands,” said William Osborne, president of Navistar RV.

“With a foundation of Navistar’s business and design excellence, we’ll continue to produce some of the best recreational vehicles in the market.”

Worth Pondering…

Recreational vehicles are wonderful… To travel by RV is to see nature and human beings, towns and churches and rivers, in fact, to see life.
