5 RVs You Likely Can’t Afford

In the world of luxury travel, private jets and super-yachts are the most popular options. But for those who want to stay on the road, the best choice is a mobile home. These opulent and massive homes on wheels often take their interior cues from luxury yachts, with leather upholstery, fine wood cabinetry, and other high-end amenities.

Millennium Luxury Coach

Millennium Luxury Coach

You’ll be blown away by the efficiency and innovation of a Millennium Luxury Coach.

The opulent features in the 2015 Millennium line—including a sink top glass bowl in the bathroom, quartz countertops, and Swarovski crystal accent fixtures—put this traveling home in a category of its own. The 45-foot, quad-slide 2015 Millennium H3-45 Prevost conversion is powered by a Volvo D-13 diesel engine.

Millennium is a family owned company with over 20 years history in the marine, aviation, and luxury coach building industry. Superior performance, luxurious style, state of the art technology, and excellent customer service sets them apart.

eleMMent Palazzo

eleMMent Palazzo

Nowadays, you can’t help but pay a lot for a feature-laden motorhome. However, the expensive madness goes over the top with an eleMMent Palazzo that sold  for a staggering $3.1 million in sunny Dubai. This opulent slightly bizarre luxury RV is made by Marchi Mobile, an Austrian company.

The Palazzo features two floors of entertainment and extravagance, with a giant master suite, and multiple bars. The party piece of the eleMMent Palazzo is the Sky Lounge, a rooftop terrace that can be deployed or retracted at the simple press of a button.

A step up from the Palazzo is the eleMMent Viva–V.I.P. shuttle. The Viva starts where the Palazzo leaves off but features a chauffeur booth and six high-end lounge and massage chairs that recline for sleeping.

KiraVan

The KiraVan, a giant custom built off road recreational vehicle, includes an office, kitchen, and bedrooms as well as its own motorbike and drone.

Capable of traveling most anywhere, the KiraVan was designed by Californian inventor Bran Ferren for his four-year-old daughter Kira, who has her own pop tent on top of the truck.

Capable of traversing nearly any terrain, from mud-swamped roads to rock-covered trails to small bodies of water, the six-wheeled “terrestrial spaceship” will be able to travel up to 2,000 miles without resupply and navigate slopes as steep as 45 degrees thanks to a special suspension system—an incline that is difficult to climb.

The cockpit also has a special vibration reducing chair, as well as control for drones that can fly ahead to check traffic.

Volkner Mobil Performance Bus

Volkner Mobil Performance Bus

Fully customizable and 40 feet long, Volkner Mobil Performance Bus features a wall that slides outward to create extra space, along with a state of the art entertainment system and a fully equipped kitchen. An incredibly luxurious “palace on wheels,” its sumptuous interior features leather seats, stone tiles in the kitchen and the bathroom, wide-screen TV, and Bose home entertainment system.

Most impressive of all is the built-in garage under the vehicle. For the owner who wants to travel in comfort without leaving behind the Ferrari, this is the way to go. Volkner has also created a motorized garage into its high end Performance models capable of swallowing whole Porsche 911s, Jaguar XK8 Cabriolets, BMW 6 Series Cabriolets, Maserati Quattroportes, and a Mercedes Sports.

Based on how it is equipped, a Volkner Mobil Bus can cost between $1.2 and $2 million.

Vin Diesel

Vin Diesel’s customized and insanely over the top fifth wheel trailer

It could be assumed that action star Vin Diesel of The Fast and the Furious fame has a love affair with wheels. It then only makes sense that he has a home on wheels as well. While it isn’t fast or furious, Vin Diesel’s customized and insanely over the top fifth wheel trailer is a mobile luxury getaway.

Designed by Anderson Mobile Estates, one of Hollywood’s top mobile trailer companies, the two-story, 1100 square foot mansion-on-wheels requires a the power of a semi to keep it mobile. Once on location, the roof pops up and walls slide out to make way for additional floor space.  Top of the line media equipment, granite kitchen counter tops, a private office, and a kids play area are just some of the luxurious comforts of home that Vin Diesel can take on the road with him.

Take Your Time When Taking Delivery

Taking delivery of your just-built motorhome can be an incredibly exciting experience for you, your family—even a handful of your friends.

2015 LondonAire
2015 LondonAire top of the line luxury diesel pusher from Newmar.

At the same time, because of the amount of premium technology and long list of features you’ll find on your brand new motor coach you may feel a bit overwhelmed the first time you step inside, even if you consider yourself to be an experienced RVer.

No matter if your brand-new motorhome was bought off the lot or you special ordered it from the factory, it is essential that you plan to take considerable time examining your RV before you drive off on any trips or adventures.

Take the time to make sure everything on your new coach is in working order and all of your questions have been answered. You’ll be glad you did.

A quality dealer will usually invest a full tank of fuel, a filled LP-gas tank, and 24 hours of operating and testing all the major systems, appliances, and functions of the RV during inspection and delivery.

2015 Holiday Rambler Ambassador 38DBT
2015 Holiday Rambler Ambassador 38DBT Diesel Pusher Class A motorhome

Better dealers will also provide new buyers with essential items not provided by manufacturers, including an electrical adapter plug, potable water hose, water pressure regulator, holding tank chemicals, RV toilet tissue, and a sewer hose with adapter and clamp. If not, the buyer should be certain to purchase these items himself before taking delivery of the rig.

Following are some helpful tips on what to do before you finish taking delivery:

Do not schedule pick up on a day before the dealer will be closed. This way, if fixes need to be made, you won’t be waiting several days. This is especially important if you’re taking delivery far from home.

The Tuscany line of luxury diesel pusher Class A motorhomes
The Tuscany line of luxury diesel pusher Class A motorhomes from Thor Motor Coach

Make sure you receive all documentation and owner’s materials, as well as serial and model numbers related to your RV’s warranties.

Test everything including awnings, engine and basement storage compartments, hydraulic jacks, slide outs, generator, sewer hose connection and storage, mirrors and lights, stove top and oven, microwave/convection oven, refrigerator, water heater, water pump, toilet, shower, washer/drier, air conditioner/heat pump, furnace, lights, entertainment center, and smoke, propane, and carbon monoxide detectors.

If you’re unsure of how to operate something, do not hesitate to consult with your sales associate.

Do not leave the dealership until all of your questions have been answered to your satisfaction. A quality dealership will make sure you leave knowing everything you need to know to enjoy your new RV.

Don’t skip the test drive. Make sure you are fully comfortable with how your new coach handles out on the road. New questions will almost certainly arise during your time behind the wheel.

When test-driving a coach, it’s a good idea to take it on the types of roads that it normally will be driven on, whether those roads are mountain passes, freeways, or back roads.

Whether you’re just beginning to consider the purchase of a new RV or are anxiously awaiting taking delivery of your new motorhome, remember to take your time and enjoy the opportunity to learn. An informed purchase is almost always a wise one. The more you know, the more confident you’ll be throughout the entire buying process and the better you’ll feel once you’re out on the road enjoying your shiny new motorhome.

Not All RV Manufacturers Are Created Equal

Once you are able to determine much of what you want in an RV, you can begin to research the manufacturers and decide which company you will trust to build the gorgeous new coach you deserve.

2015 Holiday Rambler Vacationer 36DBT
2015 Holiday Rambler Vacationer 36DBT

Following are a number of questions to ask when it comes to the people building your    dream machine:

Are They Run By Businesspeople Or RV People That Know How To Run a Business?

The difference between a run-of-the-mill recreational vehicle and an RV filled with innovative and useful features built with an attention to detail and exceptional quality is all about the operation. If your RV is designed and built by people that love RVs  themselves, you’re much more likely to purchase a product that is everything you want: stylish, comfortable, reliable, and packed full of standard features others call extras.

Class-leading RVs are the result of companies that understand their customers because of the passion they share for the RV lifestyle and the understanding they have for what qualifies as a truly great recreational vehicle.

Do They Care About Innovation?

World's Most Expensive RV Sells For $3 Million
World’s Most Expensive RV Sells For $3 Million

Some RV manufacturers take pride in finding out what their consumers care about, what they like and don’t like about their current coach, and what they’d love to have in their next one. Other RV makers rest on their laurels, re-packaging the same tired products year after year. How can you tell the difference?

Look at what each manufacturer has done lately—what features and breakthroughs have they introduced to the market in recent years?

How are they making an effort to improve from one year to the next?

If you struggle to find answers, that particular company probably shouldn’t be building your new motorhome.

Where Do Their Values Lie?

Does the manufacturer you’re considering for the construction of your new RV talk only about their products, or do they take the time to explain how and why they have your best interests in mind?

do your dream
Do Your Dream © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

A great coach is the result of a large group of great people, driven to be the very best through honesty, accountability, and a desire to treat customers like family, both before and after a motorhome has been delivered.

Do They Make An Effort To Develop Relationships With Their Customers?

With some RV manufacturers, you’re unlikely to speak with anyone on the team unless you’re contacting them with a complaint. This isn’t the way lasting relationships are fostered.

A motorhome is no small purchase, and the best manufacturers are run by those who understand what it takes to create a lifelong customer. A connection like this is the result of a total dedication to transparency, integrity, and responsiveness.

If you have a problem, those who assembled your motorhome have a problem that must be handled with honesty and an emphasis on making things right, right away. If you get the feeling that one of the manufacturers you’re considering might not react this way, move on.

The Differences Between Gas, Diesel & Luxury Diesel RVs

One of the primary aspects involved in selecting a new RV is making a decision on the type of motorhome you need.

2015 King Aire 4553 luxury motor coach with Florence Interior and Sable Maple Cabinetry
2015 King Aire 4553 luxury motor coach with Florence Interior and Sable Maple Cabinetry

The debate between gas vs. diesel motorhome engines has fueled many hours of debate within the RV community. It can be difficult knowing which way to go.

While many shoppers consider either a gas or diesel-powered coach, some prefer the added comfort and technology a luxury diesel RV provides.

If you are trying to decide between a gas or diesel motorhome, try to decide what features are most important to you. There is no right or wrong option, just advantages and disadvantages worth considering.

Gas or Diesel: Cost

The first consideration for many people shopping for a new motorhome is price. How expensive is the motor coach?

2015 Thor Motor Coach Axis RUV
2015 Thor Motor Coach Axis RUV

Motorhomes fueled by gasoline are often the choice of first-time RV buyers or RVers who don’t live in their coaches fulltime as they are less expensive than most diesel offerings. Gas models will usually not offer the same level of features and technology as their diesel counterparts, although some manufacturers build high-end gas motorhomes with amenities that rival many of the mid-level diesel units.

Long considered to have the most advantages, diesel engines typically have more power and increased torque compared to those that run on gas. With increased torque comes better towing capability and improved performance during hill climbs. If you are looking to purchase a large Class A or will be towing a boat or large SUV, then diesel may be your best option.

But for the most part, if you want to save money but still get a great coach, you’re probably looking for a higher-end gas model. If you have been saving for retirement in order to become a snowbird or full-time RVer, a luxury diesel pusher motor coach won’t disappoint. Also, diesel and luxury diesel coaches almost always retain their value longer than gas motorhomes.

2015 Fleetwood Storm shown in Platinum Onyx décor with Cinnabar wood cabinetry
2015 Fleetwood Storm shown in Platinum Onyx décor with Cinnabar wood cabinetry

Because most luxury diesel motorcoaches look and feel just like the nicest of homes, they are also the most expensive. Manufacturers equip their luxury diesel coaches with the latest and greatest features and technology available, so whether or not the increased price tag is worth it depends on what you want from your new motorhome.

While diesel engines have their advantages, these come at a price. Gasoline engines are cheaper to purchase and also less costly to maintain. If you are strictly making your decision on initial cost, then look at your gas options first.

Gas or Diesel: Fuel Efficiency

Despite that fact that diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline, it’s no secret that diesel coaches are much more fuel efficient than gas-powered models.

This is due in large part to the fact that diesel has a greater energy value than gasoline, delivering up to 10 percent better fuel economy by volume.

If you are planning to rack up big miles on your motorhome or treat it as your year-round or seasonal residence, you’d be wise to at least consider a diesel-powered option. But if you intend to use your motorhome for the occasional vacation and weekends at the lake, and then store it for winter, or are still trying to decide if the RV lifestyle is right for you, a gas-powered coach may be a better fit.

Gas or Diesel: Interior Comfort

Quality RV manufacturers craft comfortable, well-appointed interiors for both their gas and diesel-powered models. Depending on the brand, some gas-powered motorhomes can look like luxury coaches on the inside. Still, gas motorcoaches typically offer less comfort and technology than diesel and luxury diesel RVs. It all comes down to what you and your travel partner find important to enjoying your home on the road.

Luxury Diesel Motorcoaches

Luxury Getaway in a Formula 1 Palatial Motorhome
Luxury Getaway in a Formula 1 Palatial Motorhome

For starters, luxury diesel RVs are diesel-powered coaches equipped with increased horsepower, a heightened level of features and technology and high-end furniture, cabinetry, and fixtures.

If you’re a retiree, someone who is planning to live in their motorhome full time, or just want and can afford the best that industry has to offer, you may be best suited by a luxury diesel coach.

The following are the largest differentiators associated with luxury diesel motorcoaches.

Most luxury diesel motorhomes feature a custom chassis built specifically for the unit it will support. This increases reliability, comfort, stability, and weight capacity. Luxury diesel motorhomes almost always offer a more powerful engine as well. Combine both of these advantages and you have a coach that can tow more than any other type of motorhome.

Airstream

Create only memories with an Airstream
Create only memories with an Airstream

As soon as you invoke the word Airstream, people get the attraction. It’s a part of American culture that transcends time. Airstream, manufacturer of the iconic “silver bullet” travel trailer, is the oldest and most recognized recreational vehicle manufacturer in North America.

In 1931, Airstream began with Wally Byam’s dream: to build a travel trailer that would move like a stream of air, be light enough to be towed by a car, and create first-class accommodations anywhere.

Every inch of an Airstream has a function. Airstream is the most thoroughly tested brand in trailer history. Its engineering is the culmination of over 80 years of experience plus millions of miles on roads throughout the world.

World’s Most Expensive RV Sells For $3 Million

In earlier articles on Vogel Talks RVing, I’ve described the futuristic Marchi Mobile eleMMent, dubbed the most expensive motorhome in the world.

I further indicated that space-age eleMMent Palazzo had gone on sale in Dubai for a cool £2 million, the equivalent of $3.1 million U.S. dollars.

Nowadays, you can’t help but pay a lot for a feature-laden motorhome. However, the expensive madness goes over the top with this opulent slightly bizarre luxury RV selling for a staggering $3 million in sunny Dubai.

The eleMMent Palazzo is made by an Austrian company called Marchi Mobile. Responding to the reception by American car enthusiasts of its remarkable vehicles and recognizing the importance of the US for its growth plans, the group opened a wholly-owned subsidiary in Aiken, South Carolina on January 27, 2014.

The Palazzo features two floors of entertainment and extravagance, with a giant master suite, multiple bars, and a liftable “flybridge” lounge up top.

It also features a pop-up cocktail lounge, a living room complete with a fireplace and a ginormous 40-inch TV set, and a master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom.

The party piece of the eleMMent Palazzo is the Sky Lounge, a rooftop terrace that can be deployed or retracted at the simple press of a button. As if that wasn’t enough lavishness, then what about underfloor heating everywhere and ambient marble lighting?

If the weather isn’t conducive to rooftop cocktails, you can extend the driver’s side slide-out, increasing interior space by 80 percent. Marchi’s failure to incorporate a helipad is, to say the very least, rather disappointing.

From the conference/dining table to the entire lounge, you have the option of spreading the chassis out to suit your needs and retract when not needed. The tables and extra furniture are perfectly retractable to create the ambience you desire for special events, a small conference, or family reunion.

The 510 horsepower eleMMent coaches come configured with everything from mobile internet, a working fireplace recommended for use only when parked, streaming video surveillance, fog machine, and customized paint job that glows in the dark.

The eleMMent Palazzo combines the feel of a luxury home with a dual-sport exhaust system with carbon diffuser, 28-inch alloy wheels, single arm windscreen wiper, and aerodynamic design, all of which are responsible for the supreme riding experience.

According to Marchi Mobile, the strange-looking design—described by some as ugly—is aerodynamic enough to give a fuel efficiency boost of about 20 percent along with what I would assume is a fairly tremendous view of the road. When compared to a similarly sized monstrosity, I imagine.

Another appealing feature is it can even clean itself after a dusty day of motoring through the desert.

The ultra-luxury RV can reach 93 mph despite its 44,000-pound (22-ton) weight.

A remote monitoring system lets you keep an eye on your rig while you’re out overindulging in some Monte Carlo cafe, and allows you to set the interior lighting to your liking well ahead of your return. Which raises the question, if you have a $3 million RV, why would you ever leave it in the first place?
