More April 2015 RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced 5 recall notices involving 4 recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers—KZRV, Airstream, Thor Motor Coach, and Motor Coach Industries (MCI).

KZRV, L.P.

KZ-logoKZRV, L.P. (KZRV) is recalling certain model year 2015 KZ-RV Gold, Goldrush, Goldrush Klondike, and Prestige, 2014-2015 Goldrush Discovery, 2013-2015 Goldrush Nugget and 2012-2015 Stoneridge recreational vehicles manufactured May 27, 2011, to December 8, 2014. In the affected vehicles, a rivet for the quad entry steps may shear and fail, causing the steps to give when being used.

If the rivet shears causing the quad step to fail, the step user may fall, increasing the risk of personal injury.

KZRV will notify owners, and dealers will replace the defective rivets, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in April 2015. Owners may contact KZRV customer service at 1-800-768-4016.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

(Airstream) is recalling certain model year 2015 Interstate motorhomes manufactured from October 6, 2014, through March 25, 2015, and built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis. In the affected vehicles, the abutting wedge, a component attached to the door jamb to make opening the door easier after a severe frontal crash, may have been installed incorrectly.

If a vehicle that has an incorrectly installed abutting wedge is involved in a severe frontal crash, a greater force may be necessary to open the doors, increasing the risk of injury.

Mercedes Benz will notify owners on behalf of Airstream, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, correct the abutting wedge installation, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. The affected seats were manufactured in a way that the tether bar may push into the retractor panel door and potentially interfere with the seat belt locking mechanism.

If the seat belt locking mechanism does not function as intended, the bus driver may not be properly restrained, increasing the risk of personal injury in the event of a crash.

The remedy for this recall is still under development. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947.

RV Boom & Expansion Plans

When Thor Industries purchased Shipshewana, Indiana-based KZRV in April, expansion was not on their radar.

But that changed a day after the purchase was finalized when Thor officials walked through the manufacturing plant.

“On the first day after owning them, management stated they could produce more units if they had a lamination facility,” said Bob Martin, president and CEO of Thor Industries.

“We quickly just told them to give us a proposal and a plan. They already had the land.”

KZRV, which manufactures towable recreational vehicles, recently announced that it plans to expand its operations in Shipshewana, creating up to 125 new jobs by 2017, reports the South Bend Tribune.

KZRV will invest up to $4.83 million to construct and equip a new 80,750-square-foot lamination facility in Shipshewana, according to a news release by the Indiana Economic Development Corp. The building, which will be fully operational by late spring 2015, will allow the company to increase its production capacity for lamination, aluminum frame welding, and towable recreational vehicle assembly.

Lamination is being moved from an existing building where it shared space with the assembly line.

KZRV currently employs more than 360 full-time workers. It plans to begin hiring aluminum welders and general assembly workers in late spring 2015. Interested applicants may apply in person at the KZRV human resources office in Shipshewana.

Thor Industries’ other companies have their own laminating facilities, so this will be used for KZ only, Martin said.

KZRV produces a full line of towable RVs, from high-end models like the Durango and Stone Ridge to value lines including Sportsmen Classics. The KZRV complex, with the new addition, now consists of eight buildings covering 530,000 square feet.

The Economic Development Corp. offered KZRV up to $1.25 million in conditional tax credits and up to $21,600 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans. LaGrange County will consider additional incentives at the request of the LaGrange County Economic Development Corp.

The expansion is the fourth announced in the last month by Thor, one of the world’s largest RV manufacturers.

Besides Airstream in Ohio, Thor’s other expansions are taking place at Heartland and Keystone. All told, about 330 jobs will be added to the Elkhart County area over the next several years because of the expansions.

Thor Industries, one of the world’s largest RV manufacturers, is based in Elkhart and employs about 9,400 people, most of them in Indiana.

It’s clear the company believes the current RV boom will last for a while.

“Airstream is a more expensive travel trailer,” Martin said.

“For that product alone to have enough production to expand their factory for the first time in 20 years speaks to the health of the industry.”

All the expansions collectively say something, too, he said.

“It’s a telltale sign that we have a positive outlook on the industry and for Thor,” he said.

“We see it as a positive trend for the long term.”

RV Boom

KZ12_StnRdgBG_02About 80 percent of all new RVs in the U.S. are made in Elkhart County.

RV shipments have been up 32 consecutive months.

Year-to-date totals through August reached 246,483, a gain of 9 percent over the 226,125 units shipped through August of last year, according to figures from the Reston, Virginia-based Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).

Year-end figures are expected to be more than 300,000 for the second straight year. Recreational vehicle wholesale shipments reached 321,127 units for 2013, a gain of 12.4 percent over the previous year. In 2007, a run of six straight years of 300,000 plus shipments ended.

RV Dealership Captures Legacy with 1974 Holiday Rambler Trailer

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Veurinks’ RV Center is marking its 50th year as a Holiday Rambler, a milestone that was recognized by the Holiday Rambler RV Club at its rally in May.

Veurinks’ RV is promoting its longtime association with the iconic brand in a novel way.

Tim Veurink, son of the company’s founder Howard Veurink and current president, recently had the opportunity to buy an all original 1974 12-foot Holiday Ramblette travel trailer, according to a news release.

And a it turned out, it was the very first new Holiday Rambler that Veurink sold off the showroom floor when he was 16 years old.

“I received a message with some photos via Facebook from a lady south of town wanting to know if I could give her a value of her 1974 12-foot Holiday Ramblette,” Veurink said.

“When I saw the photos, I knew immediately that this was the one that I sold 39 years ago since there were very few 12-footers made and Veurinks had only sold one. I struck a deal with the seller and pulled the trailer back home and it now sits in the dealership’s showroom.”

Anticipating the 50th anniversary, Veurink said he had been looking for a 1963 Holiday for several years that would represent the first new Holiday Rambler trailer sold by the dealership.

“I did not want a big project of reconditioning, but I just could not find one that was in good enough condition,” he said.

“The 1974 was in amazing condition, all original, and since this was the unit that I had sold in 1974 we thought it would have a great story and I just had to buy it.”

Veurink said that the Ramblette has been a big hit, adding, “Often people ask if they can buy it but it is not for sale.”

“We’ve been committed to quality for over 40 years, that’s what makes KZRV great,” said Marlene Snyder, vice president of sales and marketing, in a news release.

“The DSI Award is something we take very seriously. It’s a survey that measures us in sales support, quality product and product design.  It’s truly an honor to receive this prestigious award. We are constantly striving to build the best product in the market. This is one tool to let us know that we are on the right track.”

These award winning products will be on display at this year’s National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Kentucky, December 3-5, 2013.

If we agree that the bottom line of life is happiness, not success, then it makes perfect sense to say that it is the journey that counts, not reaching the destination.
