The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced 5 recall notices involving 4 recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers—Starcraft RV, Forest River, Cruiser RV, and Allied Recreation Group.

If the wheel studs break, the wheel could detach from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Starcraft will notify owners, and dealers will replace any affected wheel hub, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 18, 2015. Owners may contact Starcraft customer service at 1-800-945-4787. Starcraft’s numbers for this recall are 9902237 and 9902238.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Forest River, Inc.

forest-RiverForest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Coachmen Freelander vehicles manufactured February 14, 2014, to April 1, 2015, and 2015 Coachmen Leprechaun vehicles manufactured on June 10, 2014. The affected vehicles, manufactured on a Ford 158″ wheelbase chassis with a 5.4L V-8 engine, may have a Federal Certification label that lists an incorrect gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), gross axle weight rating (GAWR) and wrong cargo carrying capacity information. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, “Certification.”

With incorrect GVWR, GAWR, and cargo carrying capacity information, the operator may overload the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.

Forest River will notify owners and will provide replacement labels with the corrected information, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in May 2015. Owners may contact Coachmen customer service at 1-800-453-6064. Forest River’s number for this recall is 51-04172015-0031.

Cruiser RV

CruiserCruiser RV (Cruiser) is recalling certain model year 2015 Viewfinder recreational trailers manufactured September 4, 2014, to March 30, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the liquid propane (LP) compartment in the slide room is not properly sealed to the interior of the trailer. If a leak occurs in the LP compartment, propane gas could dissipate into the interior of the trailer.

A propane gas leak into the interior of the trailer increases the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.

Cruiser will notify owners, and dealers will modify the recreational trailer so that the LP compartment is sealed from the passenger area, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in May 2015. Owners may contact Cruiser customer service at 1-866-277-5630. Cruiser’s number for this recall is 11041R.

RV Dealership Captures Legacy with 1974 Holiday Rambler Trailer

Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Veurinks’ RV Center is marking its 50th year as a Holiday Rambler, a milestone that was recognized by the Holiday Rambler RV Club at its rally in May.

Veurinks’ RV is promoting its longtime association with the iconic brand in a novel way.

Tim Veurink, son of the company’s founder Howard Veurink and current president, recently had the opportunity to buy an all original 1974 12-foot Holiday Ramblette travel trailer, according to a news release.

And a it turned out, it was the very first new Holiday Rambler that Veurink sold off the showroom floor when he was 16 years old.

“I received a message with some photos via Facebook from a lady south of town wanting to know if I could give her a value of her 1974 12-foot Holiday Ramblette,” Veurink said.

“When I saw the photos, I knew immediately that this was the one that I sold 39 years ago since there were very few 12-footers made and Veurinks had only sold one. I struck a deal with the seller and pulled the trailer back home and it now sits in the dealership’s showroom.”

Anticipating the 50th anniversary, Veurink said he had been looking for a 1963 Holiday for several years that would represent the first new Holiday Rambler trailer sold by the dealership.

“I did not want a big project of reconditioning, but I just could not find one that was in good enough condition,” he said.

“The 1974 was in amazing condition, all original, and since this was the unit that I had sold in 1974 we thought it would have a great story and I just had to buy it.”

Veurink said that the Ramblette has been a big hit, adding, “Often people ask if they can buy it but it is not for sale.”

Monaco: Alive & Well

Nearly six months ago, on May 16, Monaco and Holiday Rambler, along with Beaver and Safari, started a new journey under Allied Specialty Vehicles.

Monaco-RV-logoThe first part of that journey involved making some tough, but necessary decisions to ensure the continuation of the brands, President Mike Snell told customers in a recent newsletter.

One of those decisions was moving production and service from Wakarusa to Decatur.

“Much of the workforce was given the option to transfer to Decatur. We also worked with the company who purchased our Wakarusa facility to transition some employees to their operations,” Snell wrote.

“With a strong local economy and thoughtful transition planning, the overall impact to the area has been minimal.”

Another critical decision was to maintain distinct product DNA for each brand and to keep the company’s engineering, design, and product development teams intact, he explained.

“In order to do that, we opened a facility in Elkhart where our design teams have their own dedicated design area and shop. The entire team has been feverishly working over the last few months to bring you innovative, new features, great floor plans and stunning designs,” said Snell.

“We believe in designing quality products that fulfill our owners’ needs and desires; therefore our design process is a true collaboration between our engineers and owners across all four brands. For the past few months, we’ve been gathering your feedback through focus groups and two extensive online surveys. Your responses were highly informative and some even surprising.”

“We listened to those responses, and our design team made changes to key features to incorporate your input. In fact, any survey response that garnered a greater than 70 percent rating was automatically incorporated into our new products. When we say, ‘a coach designed by you, for you,’ we mean it.

2014 Monaco Dynasty Diesel Pusher

“Interestingly, despite owning different brands, most of you asked for the same features in a new coach design,” added Snell.

“The only slight difference being that Beaver owners asked for specific wood species and unique furniture/trim design. Otherwise, the responses were similar and have guided our design.”

Many respondents shared that they would like more counter space and additional pantry storage in the kitchen area, as well as an interest in having a smart steering wheel and a premium audio system.

Many also indicated they prefer to keep the side exhaust, something Snell described as just a sampling of the great input the company received. He  pledged the recommendations were being applied to new designs.

The biggest news Snell revealed was the announcement the firm was making a “Return to Power.”

“For the past five years, engine restrictions kept us from offering big-bore engines, which limited our product offerings,” said Snell.

“Beginning with the 600 hp rollout in January, you’ll also start seeing 500 hp, 450 hp, 380 hp, and 300 hp models.”

“Part of our 2015 product line will feature the all new Roadmaster chassis. This gives us the ability to offer big-bore Cummins engines and a new world-class independent front suspension system,” said Snell, noting it is not an “off-the-shelf” standard rail chassis.

“Our engineers collaborated closely with Freightliner Custom Chassis to offer a redesigned Roadmaster chassis with unique modifications and tuning that gives you the ride and handling you’re expecting from our brands.”

“We realize you’re anxious to see our new products, and we’re anxious to introduce them to you. But at the same time, we all know that crafting well-designed, high-quality products is not something you can rush,” said Snell.

“We’re creating products that are unique and special in the industry, not cookie-cutter. Allied Specialty Vehicles has invested in our brands and is giving us the time and resources we need to create a stellar product line-up.”

Allied Specialty Vehicles Acquires Navistar RV

Allied Specialty Vehicles (ASV), a leading $1 billion sales producer of specialty vehicles to the fire and emergency, commercial and industrial, and parent to Fleetwood RV, has purchased certain assets of Navistar RV, manufacturer of motorized and towable recreational vehicles.

Basic CMYKThe purchase was structured as a purchase of all of the equity interests of Navistar RV and includes the manufacturing operations for Navistar’s R-Vision and Holiday Rambler towable units in Harrisburg, Oregon, and Navistar’s Monaco and Holiday Rambler brand motorized RVs in Wakarusa, Indiana, according to a news release.

The sale does not include Bison Coach, Navistar’s horse trailer manufacturing business.

The purchase price was not initially revealed.

ASV has also entered into a multi-year leasing agreement for Navistar RV’s Elkhart, Indiana, facility.

ASV will be moving production to their Decatur, Indiana, facility sometime in August.  Representatives say many current employees at the Wakarusa plant will be offered jobs in Decatur or other ASV facilities.

ASV says there is a buyer interested in purchasing the Wakarusa manufacturing facility, but did not release any other details on that sale.

Employees might have an opportunity to relocate to Decatur or work with another division of ASV.

Between the Elkhart and Wakarusa facilities, about 600 people work for Navistar RV.

“ASV is honored to welcome all of the existing Monaco, Holiday Rambler, R-Vision, Beaver and Safari customers and an exceptional network of dealer partners to the ASV family,” said Peter Guile, CEO of Orlando, Florida-based ASV.

“The ASV team is committed to providing our customers and dealers with exceptional product, service, and support, and we are fully committed to re-establish the product leadership and extraordinary reputation for innovation, quality, and service for which the Monaco family of brands has been known.”

ASV also announced that Mike Snell has been named as president of Monaco and Holiday Rambler. Snell has logged over 20 years with Monaco, serving as a longtime executive for Monaco Coach Corp. and most recently as vice president of sales for Monaco RV under the Navistar umbrella.

“ASV is pleased to welcome Mike Snell as president of Monaco and Holiday Rambler,” said Guile.

“Mike has made an invaluable contribution to the Monaco brands and the industry over his 20-year career with Monaco RV, and we look forward to his leadership during this new, exciting phase of growth.”

He will report to Jim Meyer, the company’s chief operating officer.

“We join the ASV family fully energized with worthy goals and high hopes as we jointly work to rebuild our iconic and proud RV industry brands,” commented Snell.

“With the commitment and support of ASV we’ll focus on developing innovative, distinct, and aspirational products in keeping with the long and rich tradition of our brands. I look forward to working with our team, our dealers and our customers to make this vision a reality.”

ASV is currently structured around three business segments—fire and emergency vehicles, commercial and industrial, and recreation vehicles. Following the merger, Fleetwood and Monaco will be under the same umbrella, but both will be operated as separate companies with separate presidents and separate profit and loss reporting.

Worth Pondering…

The RV lifestyle is like nothing else.

It’s leaving home, exploring America, and yet bringing your home along with you!

Stopping at a wayside picnic area, preparing lunch in your kitchen.

It’s sleeping in your own bed every night, yet waking up to a new vista each morning!

The sounds of a crackling campfire; of a mountain stream, of frogs, and crickets.

It’s families drawn closer; it’s retirees being rewarded for many years of labor.

Sale of Navistar RV “Is a Possibility”

Lisle, Illinois-based Navistar International Corp., a producer of school buses, commercial trucks, defense vehicles, and recreational vehicles is evaluating the long-term profitability of several divisions, including its RV operations based in Wakarusa, Indiana.

The sale of the RV business is a possibility, according to a Navistar International Corp. news release.

Navistar is conducting a comprehensive review of all of our non-core businesses—including our Navistar RV business—to evaluate their potential to drive long-term profitability and significantly improve our return on invested capital (ROIC).

As a result of our ROIC analysis, Navistar is listening to offers for the sale of its RV business and the sale of the business is a possibility. However, we are still early on in that process and have not accepted any offers at this time.

We are not in a position that we ‘have to’ sell the business. We have a credible turnaround plan for the RV business underway and sufficient cash to continue funding operations, so we have the option to reject any offers that don’t add value.

In 2008, Monaco Coach Corp. laid off nearly 1,500 people and filed for bankruptcy. Then Navistar International Corp. acquired Monaco Coach in 2009. When Navistar acquired Monaco, there were only 20 employees left.

In August 2011, Monaco decided to consolidate its Oregon factory with the factory in Wakarusa. That brought about 400 new jobs to Elkhart County. There are currently about 600 workers between the Elkhart and Wakarusa plants.

Monaco, Holiday Rambler, and R-Vision have been part of the Navistar family of brands for the last four years.

Since the acquisition, the company has streamlined operations and appointed a new executive management team. Navistar has also fully integrated the design, development, testing, and validation of its recreational vehicles with the company’s commercial truck and bus product development organization, delivering vehicle engineering expertise unmatched in the RV industry.

In August 2012 Navistar International announced a name change from Monaco RV LLC to Navistar RV, “the natural next step in Navistar’s commitment to the business.”

“The integration of Navistar and Monaco RV has resulted in better products and higher efficiencies,” said Daniel Ustian, Navistar chairman, president and chief executive officer in a company news release.

“Updating the name of our RV company demonstrates our long-term commitment to the RV industry. When a customer buys a recreational vehicle built by Navistar RV, they know they’re getting products with proven components, many of which are used in other Navistar vehicles — vehicles that move American goods, help keep troops safe, and ensure the safe transportation of schoolchildren.”
