Consumers Digest Rates Komfort Travel Trailer as “Best Buy”

Goshen, Indiana-based Dutchmen Manufacturing, Inc. announced that their Komfort 2410RK Rear Kitchen travel trailer was rated a “Best Buy” by Consumers Digest.

The rating appears in the publication’s May/June 2012 issue and is online.

Please note: You must be a subscriber to access Consumers Digest’s Current Issue.

The Best Buy title is awarded to less than 3 percent of the products competing in any particular category.

In the magazine’s “Road to Recovery” article, Komfort was cited as the one product among dozens that “delivers all of the amenities that you’d expect from a premium travel trailer, but with more space for a lower price than other models deliver.”

The Best Buy product recommendation was a combination of product features, performance, and price, according to a news release.

“Komfort stood out and rose to the top in what we deemed premium travel trailers,” said Rich Dzierwa, editor of Consumer’s Digest.

“Komfort was the least expensive of the travel trailer products reviewed, based on quality of construction, features, use of space, and ease of towing.”

Research procedures for product evaluations are “comprehensive and diligent from the start, Dzierwa added, noting that the magazine is designed to serve consumers by helping them spend their money wisely.

Dutchmen RV Komfort trailer was named a Consumer’s Digest “Best Buy”

“Komfort is a premium travel trailer at a midline price. This is not a cookie-cutter RV,” said Rob Groover, general manager for Dutchmen’s Infinity, Komfort, and Dutchmen product lines. “There’s nothing like it on the market, especially in this price category.

“Komfort models have higher insulation values than anything in their class, making them ideal for extended camping in most types of weather. Inside, modern interiors feature leather furniture with simple, contemporary lines and fresh decors with premium flooring,” Groover added.

“A crowned ceiling increases headroom. Outside, Komfort stands out with a sleek, aerodynamic front fiberglass cap and contemporary graphics.”

Komfort Model 2410RK specs include:

  • Unloaded Weight: 6,627 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,773 pounds
  • Length: 29 feet, 4 inches
  • Height: 11 feet, 6 inches
  • Width: 8 feet

Dutchmen Infinity Best Choice for Year-Round Camping

A grueling eight-hour test in sub-zero temperatures has proven that Dutchmen Infinity luxury fifth wheels maintain steady, comfortable indoor temperatures of 72.21 degrees Fahrenheit, even in harsh, wintery conditions.

Dutchmen Infinity exterior

The company’s standard “glacial package” makes Infinity the best RV choice for those who enjoy year-round camping, said Michael Dragoo, marketing director.

Infinity, by Dutchmen Manufacturing, Inc., was tested by Dometic, which operates one of the nation’s premiere vehicle climate control facilities, according to a news release.

Sensors were placed in key areas of the coach to measure internal temperatures in the living room, kitchen, bath, bedroom, outside utility center, and outside pass-through storage compartments. The cold chamber’s temperature was then dropped to below 0 degrees.

Dutchmen reported that throughout the eight-hour test, Infinity’s inside temperature of 72.21 degrees remained stable. No waterlines froze and holding tanks maintained an average temperature of 55.5 degrees.

“Infinity performed extremely well compared with its competition,” said Rob Groover, general manager for the company’s Infinity, Komfort, and Dutchmen product lines.

“Infinity’s Glacial Package can maintain a stable temperature because we equip our floors and roofs with R40 insulation and wrap R40 insulation behind the front cap. No one else does that.”

Dutchmen Infinity Front Kitchen Model 3870FK

Groover further noted that the Glacial Package features R24 insulation in slide out floors. “This goes well beyond the industry standard,” he added.

Groover views the test’s success as “proof that we build our coaches for extended use camping.”

The Dutchmen Infinity line of luxury fifth-wheel trailers “Glacial Package” includes:

  • R-Value – roof R-40, floor R-40, walls R-9, slide room floor R-24
  • Enclosed heated and insulated underbelly plus storage area
  • Enclosed and heated tanks
  • Flex foil insulation in roof, underbelly and slide
  • 40,000 BTU Furnace with forced air heat

Infinity high profile luxury fifth wheels lead their class with feature-packed floor plans that include front lounge and front kitchen models. With a focus on spacious living quarters, residential comforts, and unique storage solutions, Infinity is an industry leader in innovation and value, Grover noted.

Dutchmen Partners with Jellystone Parks for Free Camping

RVers who purchase a new Dutchmen travel trailer or fifth-wheel this year will receive an extra bonus—a free night of camping at any Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp Resort in the United States or Canada, the RV manufacturer announced in a news release.

“We think this is a great way to introduce our customers to the many fun-filled, family Jellystone Parks across North America—we are excited to have the opportunity of introducing the Dutchmen RV brands to the Club Yogi Rewards members as well,” said Bruce Hardy, director of marketing for Dutchmen Manufacturing Inc.

The promotion is the first of its kind for Club Yogi Rewards, the points-based loyalty program for Jellystone Parks, said Lauri Hart, loyalty program manager for Milford, Ohio-based Leisure Systems Inc., which franchises Jellystone Parks.

“That’s enough points for one night of free camping in a premium campsite, but Dutchmen buyers can also continue to accumulate points for additional nights of free camping as they continue to camp at Jellystone Parks around the country,” Hart said.

Jellystone Parks have been on the expansion mode in the United States and Canada in recent years, adding new parks in Alabama, Colorado, Indiana, Missouri, South Carolina, Texas, and Nova Scotia.

Hart said Dutchmen buyers will receive a voucher that they redeem online for 6,000 rewards points. “That’s enough points for one night of free camping in a premium campsite, but Dutchmen buyers can also continue to accumulate points for additional nights of free camping as they continue to camp at Jellystone Parks around the country,” Hart said.

Dutchmen, for its part, has launched several initiatives in recent months to improve its sales and competitiveness in the RV marketplace, including restructuring its sales management team and making internal moves to improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency.

March RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced recall notices involving three recreational vehicle manufacturers—Tiffin Motorhomes, Entegra Coach, Dutchmen Manufacturing, and NuWa Industries.

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc

Red Bay, Alabama-based Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 bus, as well as certain 2009-2011 and 2013 Zephyr RV chassis equipped with an electronic control module, part number 2791-NN2E-001 or 2791-NN2E-002.

When the brake is applied, the cruise control may not cancel. Additionally, these vehicles may exhibit an inadvertent, moderate increase in vehicle speed until the vehicle reaches its governed speed after the cruise control is set.

A driver may experience reduced control of the vehicle if either the driver attempts to cancel the cruise control by applying the brake or the vehicle speed increases and the driver is unaware of the increased speed, increasing the risk of a crash.

Tiffin will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering wheel switch and reprogram the module, free of charge.

Tiffin has not provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact Tiffin at 1-256-356-8661.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Entegra Coach

Middlebury, Indiana-based Entegra Coach is recalling 29 model year 2011-2012 Anthem motorhomes manufactured from July 17, 2010 through November 30, 2011. The front tires could become overloaded due to cargo distribution within the storage area.

Overloading of front tires may cause tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Entegra will notify owners, and dealers will replace tires, and on some models replace the wheels to provide additional load capacity, free of charge.

Owners may contact Entegra at 1-800-945-4787.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Dutchmen Manufacturing, Inc.

Goshen, Indiana-based Dutchmen Manufacturing, Inc. is recalling 28 model year 2012 Rubicon travel trailers manufactured from October 12, 2011 through February 23, 2012. These vehicles have been manufactured with a frame support located too close to the trailer tires, which could result in the support contacting the tires when loaded.

Contact between the support and tire could result in tire failure, leading to loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dutchmen will notify owners, and dealers will remove the interfering frame support and install a new frame support, free of charge.

Owners may contact Dutchmen at 1-574-537-0700.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

NuWa Industries, Inc.

Chanute, Kansas-based NuWa Industries, Inc. is recalling three model year 2012 Hitchhiker Discover America RVs, manufactured from October 10, 2011 through January 30, 2012, equipped with electric/hydraulic (E/H) brake actuator pumps. Some of these pumps may not have been properly heat treated.

This condition can cause premature wear of some critical components in these pumps, which can render the unit inoperable.

The E/H brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes. Failure of the actuator can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.

NuWa will notify owners, and Dexter Axle Company will replace actuators, free of charge.

NuWa has not provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact NuWa Industries at 1-800-835-0676.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

January RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced recall notices involving four recreational vehicle manufacturers— Crossroads RV, Thor Industries, Ford Motor Company, and DRV Luxury Suites.

Crossroads RV, Inc.

Topeka, Indiana-based Crossroads RV is recalling 172 model year 2012 Rushmore and Elevation RVs manufactured from June 1, 2011 through January 12, 2012, with panther style 16-inch 8-lug aluminum wheels. These vehicles have been manufactured with an incorrect wheel center cap. The center cap that was assembled with the trailer did not provide adequate clearance to allow the wheel to fully seat on the hub face of the axle. This can result in a wheel becoming loose and potentially coming off of the trailer. A wheel separation can lead to loss of control of the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash, serious injuries, or damage to others.

Crossroads RV will notify owners, and replace the center caps free of charge. Owners may contact Crossroads RV at 1-888-226-7496.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Thor Industries, Inc

Jackson Center, Ohio-based Thor Industries, Inc. is recalling 437 model year 2012 Dutchmen Voltage and Rubicon trailers, manufactured from July 19, 2011 through December 21, 2011. The trailer wheels may not be fully seated on the hub and therefore may loosen and potentially detach from the trailer.

Wheel separation can lead to loss of control of the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash. A detached wheel also poses a risk of injury to pedestrians and other vehicles.

Thor will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the wheels, and repair the trailers as necessary, free of charge. Owners may contact Thor at 1-937-596-6849.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Ford Motor Company

Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford Motor Company is recalling certain F-53 and F-59 stripped-chassis vehicles from the 2011 and 2012 model years to fix a transmission-selector cable that may break. The F53 chassis is typically used as a platform for motorhomes while the F59 is used in commercial trucks, such as delivery vans.

The company said the “prndl” cable that controls the transmission’s gear indicator display can break where it is attached to the transmission control selector arm on the steering column. “Prndl” stands for the park, reverse, neutral drive and low gear positions. If the cable breaks, the gear indicator display in the instrument panel will not move when the driver changes the gear position. This can prevent drivers from knowing whether the vehicle is in park or reverse, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford said it built the affected 2011 chassis from February 1, 2010, through July 1, 2011, and the 2012 models from May 10, 2011, through October 25, 2011. The recall includes 13,239 vehicles.

Under the recall dealers will replace the transmission selector arm assembly and the cable free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March. Owners can contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

DRV Luxury Suites

Howe, Indiana-based DRV Luxury Suites (DRV), formerly Doubletree RV, is recalling 1,701 model year 2008 and 2010-2011 Select, Mobile, and Elite Suite RVs manufactured from June 12, 2007, through October 27, 2010 and equipped with disc brakes. Due to the paint applied to the aluminum wheel and hub face, the wheel may become loose.

This situation can result in the wheel/rim moving, shearing of the wheel studs and the wheel coming off of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

DRV will notify owners, and dealers will remove the paint from the hub face and the back of the wheels free of charge. Owners may contact DRV Luxury Suites at 1-574-457-6472.
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

According to a news release, key features of the 3650FFL fifth-wheel include a 6-foot, 8-inch-tall ceiling height in the upper deck, two slide rooms that are six inches taller than traditional extensions, and an entertainment center with a fireplace.

This opens up a whole new opportunity for our customers to enjoy all of the advantages of a front lounge without breaking the bank.”

Thor Motor Coach #1…and Still Growing

Thor Motor Coach continues as the #1 retailing brand of motorhomes in North America with 22.93% share through June 2011 according to Statistical Surveys.  The results also show Thor Motor Coach as the fastest growing motorhome brand among the top eight major manufacturers with a 27.9% increase over last year.  Class C sales captured the #1 market position with an impressive market share growth of 31.50% compared to the previous year, according to a recent (September 12) company news release.

“Packing in features that include camper favorites like mega-storage compartments, single step entrances, and molded fiberglass front caps have helped us solidify our dedication to the Class C market.  Over the past six months we have introduced several new floor plans that integrate features making the coach even more livable,” affirmed Mike Savage, Thor Motor Coach’s Class C Product Manager.

With 22.9% market share growth over last year, Thor Motor Coach experienced the largest increase for Class A motorhomes within the top eight manufacturers. Over the last few months retail customers have responded well to the addition of several impressive new features on the Hurricane and Challenger lines, the redesign of the Tuscany, and several new floor plans on the Windsport, Serrano, and A.C.E. lines.

“Our continued focus on what retail customers’ desire helps us to bring innovative floor plans with intelligent features to the market.  Our after the sale support programs like Concierge Connection and Rapid Response Parts along with the stability of a strong and financially sound company are added reasons consumers continue to display their confidence in our products,” stated Dana Simon, Vice President of Sales.

Thor Industries, Inc. was founded on August 29, 1980, when Wade F.B. Thompson and Peter B. Orthwein acquired Airstream. The name “Thor” combined the first two letters of each entrepreneur’s last name.

In 1991 Thor acquired Dutchmen Manufacturing, now one of the leading brands of travel trailers and fifth wheels. Four Winds International, manufacturer of Class A and Class C motorhomes, was acquired in 1992. Komfort Corporation, builder of trailers and fifth wheels, became part of the growing Thor family in 1995. 1996 saw the start-up of Thor California.

When Thor joined forces with Keystone RV in 2001, the company achieved an unprecedented dominance within the RV industry. With the acquisition in 2003 of Damon, manufacturer of Class A motorhomes, and Breckenridge, builder of park trailers, and the addition of Crossroads RV in 2004, this dominance was complete.

Finally, in September 2010, Thor made its largest acquisition to date when it purchased Heartland RV, further cementing its position as the world’s largest producer of towable RVs.

RV Manufacturers Recalls

Four recreational vehicle manufacturers—Spartan Chassis, Navistar, Dutchman Manufacturing, and Winnebago Industries—have recently announced recalls.

Spartan Chassis

Charlotte, Michigan-based Spartan Chassis is recalling certain model year 2010, 2011, and 2012 recreational vehicles, models MM, K2, K3, Bus, Furion, Gladiator, and Metro Star, manufactured from September 29, 2010 through June 20, 2011, equipped with a Cummins ISB, ISC, ISL, or ISX diesel engine.

The V-band clamp assembly, part numbers Q187684, Q187685, and Q187686, used to connect the inlet and outlet cone selections to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)/Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) include a T-bolt which can fracture and fail when subjected to stress or load.

A fracture or failure of the T-bolt may cause the clamp to loosen and the inlet or outlet sections attached to the DOC/DPF housing to disconnect. If the inlet or outlet sections disconnect, hot exhaust gasses can vent prior to exiting the tailpipe, creating the risk of combustion and a fire. If both clamps fail, there is a risk in some applications that the DOC/DPF housing may detach completely, creating a road hazard.

Navistar

2011 Monaco Vesta

Warrenville, Illinois-based Navistar is recalling 78 model year 2011 Monaco Vesta and Holiday Rambler Trip recreational vehicles manufactured from May 28, 2010, through May 18, 2011. The fuse in the high beam headlight electrical circuit may blow under normal operating conditions, disabling the headlights without warning, possibly resulting in reduced driver visibility.

Reduced driver visibility increases the risk of a crash, possibly resulting in property damage, personal injury, or death.

Dutchmen Manufacturing

Goshen, Indiana-based Dutchmen Manufacturing is recalling 171 model year 2011-2012 Rubicon travel trailers manufactured from December 8, 2010, through July 15, 2011. These vehicles may have been manufactured with the exterior furnace vent not installed in the sidewall of the trailer. The furnace can run without the proper exhaust ventilation and release carbon monoxide to the interior of the unit. This could result in asphyxiation or carbon monoxide poisoning. The heat build-up from the exhaust can also result in a fire.

Winnebago Industries

Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago Industries is recalling 418 model years 2009-2012 Winnebago Access, Access Premier, and Chalet; and model year 2011 Itasca Impulse and Impulse Silver motorhomes manufactured from March 5, 2008, through April 28, 2011.

These vehicles may have the potential for the propane supply hose to make contact with the metal door frame. Contact with the door frame may wear through the hose causing a propane leak, which could ignite and result in personal injury or death.
