In an earlier post I wrote about the creation of vintage aluminum Airstream birdhouse trailers that are available for online purchase.
Inspired by the Shasta trailers of the 1950s, wood-worker Jumahl has designed a vintage trailer for your avian friends who want their homes to get an upgrade.
Jumahl has been a woodworker for over 40 years. Starting as a carpenter in housing construction, he later apprenticed in furniture design and construction for several years, spent twelve years as a boat carpenter and custom yacht joiner, designed and fabricated custom millwork for a high end construction company, and started building old time banjos for Kevin Enoch in 2005.
Jumahl began making vintage Shasta birdhouses for fun, prompted by his avid interest in birding and bird photography.
The vintage trailer bird houses feature a slide out bottom for easy cleaning access and they’re constructed from durable and stable marine grade plywood brass fasteners and one and one half inch entry hole.
The aluminum door is both a design accent and a deterrent to squirrels, while the curved awning is just pure style.
A screw and spacer are included for mounting the birdhouse to a tree or post.
Because of the metal top, they should be placed in shade, not direct sunlight, to prevent overheating.
The entry hole is 1½ inches in diameter, making these birdhouses appropriate for Carolina wrens, eastern bluebirds, ash-throated flycatchers, hairy woodpeckers, tree swallows, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, and many other birds.
They were originally available in a variety of colors, but only one color schemes is currently in stock—light turquoise green over golden yellow with a black accented silver strip.
They’re priced at $60 and are available from Jumahl’s Etsy shop (see details below).
These whimsical birdhouses will add a bit of charm to your recreational vehicle, garden, or home and also make a thoughtful gift for vintage trailer enthusiasts, bird lovers of all stripes, collectors, and even eccentric Uncle Jake.
Finish and construction include:
- Exterior oil-based paint
- Brass escutcheon pins
- Aluminum sheeting on a frame of ½-inch Okume marine-grade plywood for durability and weather resistance (Okume is a sustainable-growth hardwood)
- Length: 11 inches
- Height: 7 inches
- Width: 6 inches

A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song.
