The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced seven recall notices involving seven recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers—Winnebago Industries, Spartan, Forest River, Jayco, Triple E Recreational Vehicles, Open Range RV, and Grand Design RV.

Winnebago Industries, Inc.

winnebago-quality-circle-award-255x144Winnebago Industries, Inc. During the manufacturing of the chassis, a tool may have damaged one of the brake hoses which may result in a leakage of brake fluid from the brake hose.

Brake fluid leakage would result in a reduction of brake performance, lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler (Ram) has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the brake hoses, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 26, 2014. Owners may contact Winnebago at 1-800-537-1885 or Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

A loose power stud may cause arcing or high heat on the terminal, increasing the risk of a fire.

Spartan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and properly tighten the electrical connection, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in May 2014. Owners may contact Spartan at 1-517-543-6400.

The Federal Certification Label has incorrect tire and gross axle weight rating information listed. As such, the vehicles do not conform to Part 567, “Certification.”

If the information printed on the label is incorrect, it may lead to the recreational vehicle being overloaded, resulting in tire failure which would increase the risk of a crash.

If the awning installation sequence was not completely followed, the awning motor may unknowningly become damaged. A damaged motor may lead to an unfurling of the awning.
If motor damage occurs, it is possible that the awning can unfurl unexpectedly, either while the motorhome is at rest or while in transit, increasing the risk of personal injury or a vehicle crash.

Winnebago will notify owners and Dometic staff will replace the affected motors with a design that is not subject to an out-of-sequence installation error. Winnebago has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact Winnebago at 1-800-537-1885 or Dometic at 1-888-447-0003 for more information. Owners are being instructed not to drive their vehicle until repairs can be performed.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Leisure Travel Vans Introduces Slide-Out Living Room

Winkler, Manitoba-based Triple E Recreational Vehicles, a Canadian RV manufacturer, announces the launch of the single-slide Class B motorhome based on the Mercedes-
Benz Sprinter van.

Traditionally, RVs built on the Sprinter van have had limited floor plan designs due to the confined space of the compact van. However, the Free Spirit SS’s large slide-out, which was designed in conjunction with a German aerospace engineer, allows for a very unique floor plan, taking on similar characteristics to the company’s larger Unity Class B+ model.

The all-new Leisure Travel Van Free Spirit SS is the industry’s first Class B van with a full slide-out front living area and three-piece dry bathroom, according to a company news release.

Stepping into the Free Spirit SS, people will immediately be impressed by how open the front living area feels, said General Manager Ryan Elias.

The slide-out is situated behind the driver’s seat, directly across from the sliding entry door. A fold-down sofa bed topped in memory foam is located in the slide out, which conveniently converts to a bed at night.

Moving toward the rear, the European-inspired galley is equipped with gorgeous cabinetry, Corian countertops and quality appliances. Across from the galley on the driver’s side is a wall of ample storage space. From a hanging wardrobe to full size drawers, it is apparent this RV was not just designed for short weekend trips but can easily handle longer, extended vacations, said Elias.

The Free Spirit SS is fitted with a large three-piece dry bathroom equipped with a porcelain toilet, a dedicated and spacious shower, and vanity.

“It’s incredible how spacious the Free Spirit SS feels inside,” claims Elias.

“It really doesn’t feel as though you are in a van. It has a very open feel to it, much more like a wide-body Class B+. Because of the SS’s unique layout, we believe this product will appeal not only to customers looking for a Class B van, but also to people who are looking for something slightly larger, with a little more room.”

Other notable features include an innovative full width sliding screen door allowing for open air living while keeping the bugs out, and a large storage compartment accessible from the van’s rear access doors. Golfers can be rest assured there is ample room for two golf bags with room to spare in the rear storage area.

Technological features include a 22-inch LED TV mounted on a swing-out arm for interior/exterior viewing, a seven-inch in-dash Sony GPS, back-up camera with Bluetooth/iPod/USB connections and dimmable LED lighting.

Leisure Travel Van’s reputation for the highest quality craftsmanship and premium finishes is clearly evident in the Free Spirit SS. Beautifully crafted European styled curved wood cabinetry, sleek modern Ultraleather, and Corian Private Collection Counter tops are featured throughout the coach.

With an estimated 19-22 MPG and a spacious floor plan to boot, the Free Spirit SS is the perfect touring coach for those extended trips, said Elias.

Starting at $124,241 the Free Spirit SS offers buyers looking for the features and conveniences of a larger Class B+ motorhome in a compact, easy to drive van.

The Free Spirit SS will be featured at America’s Largest RV Show in Hershey, Penn., from September 12 to 16, and at the California RV Show in Pomona, Calif., from October 12 to 21.

Leisure Travel Vans/Triple E Introduce Ambassador Rewards Program

Winkler, Manitoba-based Leisure Travel Vans and Triple E RV introduced a new ambassador rewards program that gives cash to current owners who refer new customers to the company’s brands.

RVers who own a Leisure Travel Van or Triple E RV, and wish to promote their RV brand and the RV lifestyle, may sign up to join the company’s Ambassador Rewards Program.

Upon signing up for the program, RVers will receive an intro kit which includes product brochures of their specific model as well as a number of owner referral cards. These cards will have space for owners to fill in their information. They are intended to be given out anytime the owner shows off his or her recreational vehicle.

For each referral that ends up purchasing a new Leisure Travel Van or Triple E RV and gives the current owner credit for the referral, he or she will receive a reward as a token of the company’s appreciation.

In cases where multiple referral cards are handed to the potential customer, the referral that first took place will receive the reward.

Most of these interactions will happen as current owners are out and about on their travels.

However, from time to time, the company may phone a current owner if there is a potential customer in their area and there is no dealer with stock nearby. There is no obligation, but the current owner could receive credit for displaying their unit to a prospective buyer, the company noted in a news release.

Ambassadors earn the following rewards:

  • First or second purchasing customer = $250 per referral
  • Third or fourth purchasing customer = $500 per referral
  • Fifth purchasing customer = $500 plus two Leisure Travel Van or Triple E RV jackets
  • Sixth or more purchasing customer = $500 per referral

Referrals are cumulative and do not reset at the start of a new year.

Best of all, current customers who sign up to be ambassadors can receive $500 when they upgrade their RVs to another Leisure Travel Van or Triple E RV. It’s like referring yourself, the company noted.

For more information or to sign up for the ambassador program, click here.

Summer factory tours are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Other tours are by appointment only. Tours are generally 45 minutes to 1 hour. No open toe shoes allowed.
