The distinctive full-color exterior creates an upscale appearance, featuring upgraded high-gloss laminated fiberglass sidewalls complemented by a fully painted atrium design fiberglass cap.

“It’s a dramatic change, and really sets us apart from the competition,” said Nick Eppert, in a company news release, noting the Fairfield is still available as a traditionally built, aluminum-sided trailer.

The distinctive full-color exterior creates an upscale appearance, featuring upgraded high-gloss laminated fiberglass sidewalls complemented by a fully painted atrium design fiberglass cap.

Heartland also enhanced Fairfield’s interior decors, which proved to be a key selling point with consumers, adding new furniture designs along with updated countertops, flooring, and bedroom treatments.

“We understand where the destination trailer market is going,” said Heartland RV President Chris Hermon.

“I am pleased with our new aggressive look and styling in the Fairfield. We are very serious about destination trailers at Heartland and our dealers will be able to see that during this year’s Open House.”

The Fairfield lineup is being offered in six models, including the all-new 406FK, featuring “the perfect combination of a front kitchen and a bunk house,” according to Eppert.

All Fairfield units will continue to utilize wide-body construction with eight-foot sidewalls and a standard atrium design fiberglass cap.

In addition, floor plans are equipped with several residential appointments including a free standing range, 18-cubic-foot refrigerator, and microwave.

Eppert reported that dealers are energized about the full color exterior for the new model year.

“Wilkins RV picked up the Fairfield late last year at our Bath and Churchville, New York, locations,” said Brian Wilkins, president.

“Over this past year, our destination trailer sales have exceeded not only our previous year’s sales but also our own aggressive expectations. With better product and more models coming this fall, Wilkins RV’s expectations for next year’s destination trailer sales are even higher.”

April RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced recall notices involving four recreational vehicle manufacturers— Featherlite, Inc., Spartan Chassis, Inc., Winnebago Industries Inc., and Motor Coach Industries Inc. (MCI).

Featherlite, Inc.

Cresco, Iowa-based Featherlite, Inc. is recalling five model year 2012 8415 trailers quipped with electric/hydraulic (E/H) brake actuator pumps. Some of these pumps may not have been properly heat treated. This condition can cause premature wear of some critical components in these pumps, which can render the unit inoperable.

The E/H brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes. Failure of the actuator can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.
Featherlite will notify owners, and dealers will replace the actuators free of charge.

Featherlite has not provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Featherlite at 1-877-903-1444.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Spartan Chassis, Inc

Charlotte, Michigan-based Spartan Chassis, Inc. is recalling 13 model year 2012 K2 and MG chassis manufactured from Dec. 15, 2011 through Jan. 31, 2012, and equipped with 3030 brake chambers. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, “Air Brake Systems” because they do not meet the park brake and draw bar requirements.

The park brake may not hold the vehicle in place and if the vehicle moves, injury or property damage could occur without warning.

Spartan will notify owners and install improved brake chambers, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule for this campaign. Owners may contact Spartan at 1-517-543-6400.

Spartan’s Safety Recall No. is 12005.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Winnebago Industries Inc.

Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago Industries Inc. is recalling two model year 2008 Access motorhomes, manufactured on April 10, 2008 and July 23, 2008. Over time and with frequent use, the roll stop latches on the wheelchair lift outer barrier may become bent or misaligned.

A wheelchair occupant may defeat or ride over the insufficiently latched roll stop. If this occurs when the lift platform is in an elevated position, the wheelchair’s occupant could fall and sustain injury.

Winnebago is working with Braun to identify and notify owners, and Braun dealers will repair the vehicles, free of charge.

Owners may contact Winnebago Industries Owner Relations at 1-641-585-6939.
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Motor Coach Industries (MCI)

Schaumburg, Illinois-based Motor Coach Industries Inc. (MCI) is recalling model year 2009-2012 J motor coaches. Due to inadequate bonding, the transom windows, the rear-most windows on each side, may detach from the coach, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Potentially 560 units are affected.

A transom window detachment without warning could increase the risk of personal injury or property damage, according to NHTSA.

MCI will notify owners, and dealers will install mechanical retention clips on the transom windows, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin this month.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Renegade Shows Ikon at Good Sam Rally

Bristol, Indiana-based Renegade/Kibbi LLC drew steady traffic at the Good Sam Rally, March 22-25 in Phoenix, with the latest rendition of its flagship Ikon motorhome.

Ikon by Renegade

A unique upscale coach, it combines the look, feel, and amenities of a bus conversion with the rather impressive towing capacities and serviceability of the 57,000-pound GVWR Freightliner Cascadia commercial duty chassis upon which it’s built, reports RV Business.

The 45-foot, $640,000 (retail) quad-slide coach on display in Phoenix, powered by a 560-hp Detroit Diesel engine mated to an Allison transmission, featured a bath and a half, heated granite floors throughout, solid wood, high-gloss cherry cabinets, and a hydronic heating system.

If this sounds like a lot of coach for the typical 2012 buyer, the fact of the matter is that 15-year-old Renegade, which does a lot of custom work and also markets a smaller more mainstream Explorer line, seems to have been weathering the storm pretty well.

“Even in the worst of times,” reports Danny Lagunas, national sales manager, “we invested heavily in new product prototypes and fiberglass mold projects, so while a lot of our competitors were sitting on the sidelines, we were preparing for today. As a result, our business was up about 20 percent in 2011 over 2010, and we already are up 12 percent this year. We think we are on the upswing. I know the whole industry — the motorized side — is still a little iffy, but people are still buying them. We build a very niche product. People come to us to build what they want. They don’t have to settle for something off the lot.”

Renegade/Kibbi LLC

Explorer by Renegade

In 1997, Chuck McKibbin and his crew were banned from showing their unit at the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association’s (RVIA) national convention because they were not members. So they displayed their RV in the parking lot and called themselves the renegades.

The name stuck and now, 10 years later, Renegade/Kibbi LLC has grown to 105 employees, and has eclipsed production milestones with the 2,000th motorhome and the 1,500th trailer rolling off the assembly line.

“It worked like it’s supposed to,” McKibbin said of his company. “I wanted this to be the kind of place I want to work at.”

Chuck started building RVs with the intent of just making a living. He did not envision the company would blossom as it has but he did see a need in the marketplace for trailers that could haul racing cars. Although a few trailers have been built for NASCAR drivers like Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, and Dale Earnhardt Jr., drag racers are the primary customers.

The company has branched into other markets, creating trailers to haul horses or outfitted with kennels for dogs.

Renegade Motorcoach with Garage

Chuck instilled a family feeling at Renegade. He provided a platform for employees to work hard and create a quality unbeatable product.

In 2004 the Principals of ShoreView Industries partnered with Chuck McKibbin in an effort to continue the growth of Renegade.

In July 2007, Chuck retired from the business.

Chuck McKibbin was stated as saying, “Renegade is still going to be in my heart.”

Shoreview Industries and the employees at Renegade continue the work that Chuck created.

Renegade currently manufactures motorhomes (Ikon, Explorer, Renegade, and Renegade with garage), Sportsdeck, trailers, and custom-designed specialty vehicles.
