The Growing Compact Motorhome Market

Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago Industries, Inc. is forging a distinct new motorhome market for compact, fuel efficient motorhomes.

With market share of 43.2 percent in calendar 2014 in this segment, Winnebago has essentially created a new market for customers interested in compact, fuel efficient motorhomes.

“We define a compact motorhome as any Class A, B, or C product with a narrow-width body (90 inches) and is under 26 feet in length,” said Russ Garfin, Winnebago Product Manager, in a company news release.

“Essentially that comes down to new product offerings in which Winnebago has taken the lead. New chassis selections in the past decade, such as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ram ProMaster, have provided Winnebago the opportunity to create innovative new products that meet the needs of a growing customer base.”

“The compact motorhome category has grown an amazing 83.3 percent since 2006, while the motorhome industry as a whole has declined by 32.1 percent.” Garfin added.

“Our new products have really sparked a growing trend of buyers who want to enjoy the RV lifestyle, but also want an easy-to-drive, fuel-efficient and highly maneuverable full-featured motorhome.”

According to Statistical Surveys, Inc., 5,441 motorhomes were retailed in the compact motorhome category in calendar 2014, 2,382 (43.8 percent) of which were Winnebago motorhomes.

Since 2006, 27,939 have been retailed in the compact motorhome category, 13,750 (49.2 percent) of which were Winnebago products.

Winnebago products that are included in the compact motorhome category include the Class A Via and Reyo, Class C View, Navion, Trend and Viva, and the Class B Winnebago Touring Coach line of Era and Travato.

The Class A Winnebago Via and Itasca Reyo are built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis. Three floor plans offer a whole host of arrangements so you can customize your interior to suit your needs.

Also built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, the Class C Winnebago View and Itasca Navion offer four attractive floor plans with room for expanded dining and relaxation.

Airstream Interstate Remains Top Selling Class B Motorhome

Jackson Center, Ohio-based Airstream announced the brand’s popular Interstate is the top selling Class B diesel motorhome in the U.S. for the third year in a row, according to Statistical Surveys Inc. Brand Market Share Report, which details total sales of diesel and gas class B models.

In 2014, Airstream Interstate unit sales increased 30.2 percent over 2013—nearly 8 percent higher than the overall B Van segment growth which was up 22.8 percent year over year. The Interstate now has 33.7 percent market share of the diesel class B segment.

“The momentum we have seen over the past three years is incredible,” said Airstream CEO and President Bob Wheeler, in a company news release.

“The collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Airstream combines the best of two iconic and luxurious brands.”

The Airstream Interstate motorhome continues the tradition of extraordinary design and handcrafted quality that has made Airstream the leader in luxury RVs for 83 years. It serves as a fuel-efficient, luxurious and safe way for travelers to explore the open road and includes nearly 50 “Best in Class” features, enhancements, and a renewed commitment to safety and refined luxury.

The Interstate has a starting MSRP of $149,031.

“Interstate continues to lead sales for all Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based platform models in the class B diesel space,” said Justin Humphreys, VP of Sales for Airstream.

“In fact, when looking at the market scope data from Stat Surveys, our Interstate van sold 76 percent more than the top class B gas model. Considering our premium position, this success is extraordinary and is a testament to both industry-leading luxury features combined with the industry’s best dealers.”

Airstream had a record-setting 2014, making it the best-selling year in the company’s 83-year history, and the third year of record sales in a row. The demand for Airstream’s design-driven products led to the company’s largest backlog in more than 30 years and plant expansions for both its van and travel trailer production facilities.

The Airstream Interstate is available in three models: Interstate Lounge XLT (starting at $151,736), Interstate Grand Tour XLT (starting at $151,736), and Interstate Lounge (starting at $149,031)

A fourth touring coach from Airstream, the Autobahn starting at ($134,906), is a luxury van, perfect for corporate travelers who place a premium on productivity, or for family road trippers in search of comfort and relaxation.

Motorized & Towable RV Sales Soar in 2014

Sales of recreational vehicles in the United States hit a low point during the recession, bottoming out in the spring of 2009 with the bankruptcy of two large motorhome manufacturers—Fleetwood Enterprises and Monaco Coach.

2015 Keystone Montana 3791RD fifth wheel
2015 Keystone Montana 3791RD fifth wheel

Yet these days, RV sales have improved along with the economy. Lower priced towables with price tags that can start at around $10,000, led the recovery. Sales of the more expensive motorized RVs, including motor \homes that can have price tags well over $500,000, caught up later.

In North America sales were running over 300,000 units a year until 2008, according to report by Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI). In 2009, sales dropped to 206,000 units. By 2013, they went back to 303,000 units. So in four years it came back 47 percent from the bottom, which is very impressive as an economic indicator.

During that time, sales of towable RVs (including folding trailers, truck campers, and travel trailers) rose 46.4 percent while sales of the more expensive motorized motorhomes (Class A, B, and C) gained 51 percent from the 2009 low.

And in 2014 motorized and towable RV sales continued to soar.

December 2014 motorhome retail registrations increased 27.4 percent compared to the same period a year ago, driving year-end totals to a 16.4 percent increase.

Sales in the Class A motorhome market grew 23.1 percent for the month while ending the year up 14.8 percent. Thor led the segment with a 23 percent market share followed by Winnebago (20 percent), Forest River (15.4 percent), and Tiffin Motorhomes Inc. (15.1 percent).

Class C motorhome registrations saw a 34.7 percent rise in December and posted an 18.3 percent gain for 2014. Forest River was the segment leader for the 12 months with a 35.7 percent market share, followed by Thor (25.6 percent), and Winnebago with 21.7 percent of the market.

Adding further evidence of a banner year for the RV industry, SSI reported that towable retail sales climbed 10.3 percent in 2014, spurred by a 24.4 percent increase during December. All segments showed year-over-year gains for the month.

Towable results by category showed:

Sales for the high-volume travel trailer sector shot up 30.5 percent for the month and 12.3 percent year-to-date.

Folding camping trailer sales were up 5.4 percent for the month but dipped 2.8 percent for the year.

Recreational park trailer sales gained 38.7 percent in December and 6.5 percent for the 12 months.

Forest River Inc. was the towable sales leader for 2014 with a 36.4 percent market share, edging out Thor Industries Inc. which captured a 36.1 percent share. Jayco Inc. was No. 3 with a 12.9 percent share.

By segment, Forest River was No. 1 in travel trailer sales for the year with a 37.4 percent market share, ahead of Thor (33.6 percent) and Jayco (14.4 percent).

Thor was No. 1 in fifth-wheel sales, capturing a 49.1 percent market share, followed by Forest River (30.4 percent), Jayco (8.9 percent) and Grand Design RV Co. (6.3 percent).

Forest River was the folding camping trailer sales leader for the full year with a 64 percent market share while Jayco (14.1 percent) held the No. 2 position followed by Columbia Northwest/Aliner Inc. (11.3 percent).

EverGreen RV Fastest Growing RV Company

Middlebury, Indiana-based EverGreen Recreational Vehicles and its Lifestyle Luxury RV division announced that the year-end numbers released by Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Statistical Surveys show that EverGreen is the fastest growing company of the top 15 manufacturers in the towable RV segment for 2013.

EverGreen Amped toy hauler
EverGreen Amped toy hauler

EverGreen showed the highest growth statistics for both unit growth, at 85.5 percent and market share growth at 60.4 percent, among the top 15 towable RV manufacturers.

The momentum for EverGreen was significant as the firm’s top position in the towable segment moved from 74.7 percent of unit growth with market share growth of 52.2 in September to the current numbers—an increase of over 10 percent in the fourth quarter alone, according to a company news release.

“We’ve shown significant momentum throughout 2013 and it continues in 2014,” said Mark Boessler, EverGreen president and chief operating officer.

“We attribute our leading position to attracting and partnering with the best dealers in the business. Our entire manufacturing and sales team must also be commended, as we now have 10 unique brands to choose from. Our dealers are profiting from both our innovative designs and the variety of price points we are hitting.”

Boessler also noted that EverGreen’s policy of providing its dealers with true protected trade territories and rejecting the industry norm of selling similar brands in the same marketplace is also key to dealer success.

“We understand that our dealers have a dramatically higher rate of success and capture far more market share in their territories, without having to deal with cloned products being sold right across town,” Boessler added.

“We encourage dealers interested in our way of doing business, or those who are looking to replace a current line, to give us a call.”

Final 2013 numbers from Statistical Surveys show that Prime Time’s travel trailer brands increased total retail sales by 47 percent and Prime Time’s fifth wheel brands increased total retail sales by 62 percent.

With a combined market share increase exceeding 30 percent for 2013, Prime Time is one of the fastest growing retail manufacturers in North America, according to the news release.

The consistent sales growth is a function of a unique business model, great dealers, and impressive product, according to National Sales Manager Ken Walters.

“We put our dealers first and offer products that are a smart investment for them. They’ve felt great about increasing the amount of Prime Time products on their lots over the years and customers have chosen to buy that product over a myriad of other options. We couldn’t ask for a better lineup of dealer partners.”

Jackson Center, Ohio-based Airstream announces the brand’s Interstate model is the top selling Class B motorhome in the United States for the third year in a row, according to Statistical Surveys Inc., a provider of RV market intelligence.

In 2013, Airstream Interstate unit sales increased 48 percent over 2012 — nearly three times the overall segment growth which was up 15.9 percent year over year. The Interstate now has nearly 23 percent market share in the touring coach segment, said Bob Wheeler, president and CEO.

“The momentum we gained in 2011 and 2012 has carried us for another year,” said Airstream CEO and President Bob Wheeler.

“To keep things rolling, we unveiled a new Interstate model at the end of 2013 in an effort to enhance the product and experience for our buyers. We think these changes will only magnify interest as we move into 2014.”

The Airstream Interstate motorhome continues the tradition of extraordinary design and handcrafted quality that has made Airstream a style classic for 82 years, he added, noting it serves as a fuel-efficient, luxurious, and safe way for travelers to explore the open road and includes nearly two dozen “best in class” Mercedes-Benz features, enhancements, and a renewed commitment to safety and refined luxury.

“Our dealers are also very instrumental to the success of the Interstate, and we appreciate their hard work over the last three years in helping Airstream maintain the top retail spot for B Vans,” said Wheeler.

Airstream had a record-setting 2013, making it the best-selling year in the company’s 82-year history, said Wheeler. The demand for Airstream’s design-driven products led to the company’s largest backlog in more than 30 years, he added.
