Workhorse to Re-enter RV Chassis Market

With RV demand growing stronger, the Workhorse Group plans to re-enter production of Class A motorhome RV chassis at the Workhorse Union City, Indiana plant.

workhorse logoPlans call for delivery of RV chassis in 2015.

The Workhorse nationwide network of over 400 dealerships will support and service the motorhome vehicles.

Workhorse has been recognized as a leader in RV Chassis throughout the strong RV marketplace of the mid-2000s. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) estimates RV volume was nearly 33,000 units per year in 2007, dropping to 5,900 units in 2009, and has been on a steady incline, with Class A Motorhome 2014 volume of over 21,800 units per year.

The steady growth back to strong current RV volumes, coupled with industry demand and interest, has resulted in the Workhorse brand re-entering the RV Chassis Market.

“Our RV manufacturing customers have always relied on the dependability and performance of the Workhorse RV chassis,” said Stoney Steenekamp, President of AMP Trucks Inc., a subsidiary of Workhorse Group Inc.

“Today, we believe the RV market is strong once again. With the growing demand we have recently seen, it just made sense for us to begin entering back into production.”

Over the years, the Workhorse brand established itself as a leader in building RV chassis, with dependable product solutions and strong support through a network of more than 400 dealerships and service centers across the country.

Workhorse intends to ramp up production of the Class A Motorhome chassis at the Workhorse Union City plant which is currently in limited production of the Workhorse E-GEN vehicle, an EPA-approved electric truck chassis with onboard generator for the medium-duty truck segment. The E-GEN vehicle allows fleet operators to choose gasoline, electric, propane, or CNG fuel options.

The Workhorse RV Chassis line will be an improved design, offering both 6.0L and   powerful 8.8 liter gasoline engines, coupled with an Allison transmission. The 8.8L engine is designed to match diesel towing ability and mileage.

“It gives us great delight to once again take our place in the RV Chassis market,” said Steenekamp.

“We believe the demand is there, we will be building an improved RV chassis line, and we fully expect our Workhorse W-16 and W-22 Class A motorhome chassis to quickly be recognized as leaders in the category.”

Workhorse Custom Chassis

Previously a division of Navistar, the Workhorse brand along with the Workhorse Union City, Indiana assembly plant, and network of over 400 dealerships was sold to Workhorse Group Inc. in 2013.

Workhorse Group Inc. manufactures electric drive systems for medium-duty, class 3-6 commercial truck platforms, and can equip its Workhorse chassis with electric, gasoline, propane, or CNG engines.

The company is re-entering the RV Chassis market and will also be building Class A motorhome chassis at the Workhorse Union City, Indiana plant.

Worth Pondering…

The RV lifestyle is like nothing else.

It’s leaving home, exploring America, and yet bringing your home along with you!

Stopping at a wayside picnic area, preparing lunch in your kitchen.

It’s sleeping in your own bed every night, yet waking up to a new vista each morning!

The sounds of a crackling campfire; of a mountain stream, of frogs, and crickets.

It’s families drawn closer; it’s retirees being rewarded for many years of labor.

Steps in Buying the RV of Your Dreams

It’s all about buying the RV of your dreams!

Do your dream! © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

Whether you are considering the interior accommodations, features, and technology or the amount of available interior and basement storage, it all matters, but the process of deciding what’s right for you doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

When contemplating the purchase of a motorhome or trailer, take your time, do your homework, talk to owners of similar types and brands of campers, attend RV shows, and locate a good reputable dealer who stands behind his products and provides quality service.

Visit the RV dealers in your area, and attend RV shows. Seeing a selection of models in one location allows you to do side-by-side comparisons on manufacturers, models, size, price and options.

It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and start fantasizing about the good times you’ll have cruising down a scenic highway in the RV of your dreams—your home-away-from-home. But do the research first.

The first thing to remember when RV shopping is to set goals and stick with them. Key goals include establishing an RV budget, deciding on the RV type and size, deciding on the RV floor plan, features, and amenities, and narrowing down the manufactures to several choices that meet your criteria.

Towable or Motorized?

For many families, towable RVs offer great flexibility and if you already own a vehicle that can serve as your tow vehicle, you are already half-way there.

Motorized RVs on the other hand offer great passenger comfort while on the road and some people find them easier to maneuver into a camping site.

Are you a weekend warrior, or do you plan to do extended adventures? Or are you a snowbird or full-time RVer.

You’re obviously going to need a lot more gear if you plan to live in your RV for an extended stay, which means you will need more storage space and greater load capacity. Sport Utility RVs (or toy haulers) are a great option for people who want to bring along a lot of large gear.

Sleeping capacity?

What size or RV fits your family? How many people will your RV need to sleep? An RV built for two offers a different set of features than a bunkhouse built for a family.

With so many new styles of RVs on the market it’s helpful to narrow down your desired floor plan before hitting the showroom floor.

Where do you plan to camp?

Depending on where you plan to camp, the size of your RV may be an issue you need to consider. Most RV parks and resorts can accommodate motorhomes and trailers up to 40 feet in length or longer. Some national parks, state parks, provincial parks, and county or regional parks campgrounds have length restrictions.

A Class B motorhome, Class C motorhome, truck camper, or small trailer are all goods options for people who desire to have the ability to camp most anywhere.

You’ll also want to consider options, such as a generator or solar panels, that simplify boondocking or dry camping.

When do you plan to camp?

Are you a summertime RVer? Or do you like to find your AWAY year round?

If winter camping is something you enjoy, then consider a four-season RV.

When purchasing an RV for use in cold weather, ensure sure it has cold weather features including heated holding tanks, dual pane windows, adequate LP capacity, an enclosed underbelly, and heated bays.

A camping trip to a ski area; football, basketball, or hockey game; hunting or snowmobiling; cross country skiing, snow tubing, tobogganing, or ice fishing are some of the ways you can continue to enjoy your RV during the winter months.

Or if you plan to spend considerable time camping in hot weather, you’ll need adequate air conditioning.

There are many choices of RVs on the market with something for everybody and every budget.

Never forget your dreams.

Now there are even more family friendly bunkhouse models to choose from with the introduction of the G240DBD (Double Bunk with Dinette) and G291DBS (Double Bunk with Slide), according to a company news release.

The new models provide more choices in kid friendly bunkhouse models with large slide rooms that provide additional space for dining, gathering, and sleeping. All the EverGreen I-GO brands are built lightweight for easy towing.

New G240DBD

The G240DBD features an open layout with plenty of room for the entire family. A large, single slide opens across from the kitchen area for entertaining. The large slide houses a 90-inch U-shaped dinette with plenty of space for eating or watching the optional 32-inch  flat screen TV. The TV sits on a swivel entertainment center with radius sides that separates the living area from the master bedroom so the TV can be viewed from either room.

An angled entry to the large double bunks provides easy access for the kids with a privacy curtain when it’s time to sleep. Six adults can sleep comfortably in the G240DBD. The bathroom features a 40-inch tub/shower and a medicine cabinet provides storage for toiletries. While enjoying the outdoors, preparing meals is easy with an outside kitchen that comes standard. An outdoor range, sink and refrigerator keep the fun outside longer—perfect for large families.

The larger G291DBS maximizes space with a massive living room slide and an additional entry door off the rear bath—for the kids. The main entrance is in the living area and kitchen. There is plenty of seating for everyone in the slide with a sofa and large dinette. The generous 40-inch tub in the bathroom makes for easy clean-up with the kids right off the rear door access.

There is a double bunk that can sleep four adults in the rear of the coach with an easy access angled entry and a bunk ladder shelf to help enter the top bunk smoothly.

Both models have plenty of bedroom storage, from the wardrobes on either side of the 60-inch by 80-inch queen bed to the overhead storage above the bed and lift up storage below the bed. Fully equipped kitchens include a refrigerator, oven, microwave, and single basin sink. When preparing meals the range cover increases counter space. The finished, lighted pass-through storage at the front of the coach offers a solution to all the extra camping gear and equipment.

All I-GOs share EverGreen’s quality construction features like the DuraLite six-sided double welded cage construction that provides a secure frame for the ultimate in durability. The one-of-a-kind TPO roof is mechanically applied to prevent bubbles or lifting and requires no maintenance to save money down the road. Electrical lines and mechanicals are isolated by the ducted, heated enclosed underbelly, which also helps to keep tanks from freezing.

Torklift Introduces GlowStep Revolution

Sumner, Washington-based Torklift International introduces a “top-secret new product”, the GlowStep Revolution, available in applications ranging from two to six steps.

banner_gs“The GlowStep Revolution is a scissor step made especially for towables including fifth wheels,” explained Torklift International General Manager Jay Taylor, in a news release.

“Previously, our industry leading GlowStep was only available for truck camper applications, now it works with towables and side-entry truck campers.”

“GlowStep Revolution is the only scissor step available for towables that eliminates that ‘diving board’ feeling felt when walking down a factory step because the factory step does not reach the ground. There is usually a large gap at the bottom of the factory step between the step and the ground,” Taylor said.

“The GlowStep Revolution is the only ‘Earth to RV’ step giving the customer the best stability.”

This new step product also prevents customers from having to haul around inconvenient and often dangerous quick fixes for their factory steps.

“Recently, we visited a campground to observe homemade solutions people create to help their steps reach the ground,” he said.

Composed of 100 percent aluminum and stainless steel
Composed of 100 percent aluminum and stainless steel

“We saw that people used pallets, cinder blocks, plastic step stools, and wooden blocks to stabilize their step and help them reach the ground easier. Those solutions are bulky and not simple to set up, plus they take up a great deal of storage space inside the RV during transit.”

In a matter of minutes, the GlowStep Revolution bolts to where the factory step would be housed. It folds up for storage and locks into place, typically giving a greater deal of ground clearance than the factory step. Additionally, it is roughly 50 percent lighter than the factory step.

It also features the All Terrain Landing Gear. The landing gear is a set of leveling feet on the step that can be adjusted through a push button mechanism on uneven terrain.

“The landing gear allows the customer to park on any kind of terrain without having to be concerned about pin-pointing their step deployment area on a level space,” Taylor explained. “They keep the step level and sturdy.”
The All Terrain Landing Gear can also be purchased separately and retrofitted onto any pre-existing GlowStep application.

Self illuminating steps - No batteries
Self illuminating steps – No batteries

The original GlowStep made for rear entry truck camper applications will not be discontinued. The GlowStep Revolution features a new mounting bracket that allows it to be mounted to towables and side-entry truck campers.

“When we visited the campground we also learned something interesting about campers who travel with their dogs,” Taylor added.

“Dogs typically have a hard time getting up and down factory steps because they are often grated like a cheese grater leading to their toe nails getting caught in the step. The GlowStep Revolution does not feature this grate design, allowing pets to walk up and down it comfortably.”

The GlowStep Revolution is rated up to 375 pounds when used with the GlowGuide handrail and features an 8-inch step depth making it compliant with RV Industry Association manufacturer step design requirements.  It also features bushing bearings at each hinge point for maximum stability and longevity. It is made in the United States and comes with a lifetime warranty.

The GlowStep Revolution is available for pre-order.

The step is available for sale July 8. The first 50 customers to pre-order the step will receive their choice of free SafeStep pet barrier panels or a Dirt Destroyer shoe cleaning attachment. Customers who purchase a GlowStep or GlowStep Revolution with a GlowGuide handrail between now and August 14, will also be eligible for a $20 rebate toward a GlowGuide handrail.

RV/MH Museum Introduces Historic Shasta Exhibit

Elkhart, Indiana-based RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum recently introduced its newest exhibit featuring a retrospective on the evolution of the iconic Shasta brand of travel trailers.

The display includes a 1954 Shasta that’s been in the museum’s inventory for years and a 2015 reissue of a 1961 Shasta Airflyte 16sc, courtesy of Mick Ferkey, owner of Greeneway RV, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, and a member of the RV/MH Hall of Fame board of directors.

While the reissue of a 1961 Shasta Airflyte 16sc has the look and style of the 1960s model, it is fully equipped with modern features and appliances, including a full bath, according to an RV/MH Hall of Fame press release.

“Shasta has a rich heritage and is the industry’s longest producer of RVs. The brand has been in continuous product since its founding in 1941,” said Darryl Searer, president, RV/MH Hall of Fame.

“When Californian Robert Gray built the first Shasta ‘house trailer’ to be used as mobile military housing, he had no idea his homes on wheels would play a major role in establishing a billion-dollar industry—or that the little trailers would spark wanderlust in Americans that would carry them across the miles and into the next century.”

The evolution of the Shasta display in the museum actually began when Mark Lucas, president/general manager, Shasta RV, a division of Forest River, noticed a yellow and white 1961 Shasta for sale sitting in a front yard, just up the road from his office in Middlebury, Indiana.

“I’ve always been a car guy. I’ve restored and customized a bunch of older cars. My wife has a 1960 Cadillac convertible with a white interior,” said Lucas.

“So when I ran across that 1961 Shasta I envisioned towing the restored 1961 Shasta behind my wife’s car. I bought it and brought it to the factory.”

As it turns out, a restoration was not as easy as Lucas first thought.

“We started to pull it apart and discovered it had aluminum water tank and aluminum water line, so I said, ‘Pull it out and we’ll replace it’,” Lucas continued.

“They said, ‘It’s got that old style wiring,’ so I said, ‘Pull that out and replace it.’

Lucas’ crew kept pulling it apart until they ended up with a bare frame. He laughed and added, “That wasn’t part of the plan—my wife’s going to be pretty mad. I got with our engineer Mark Dunithan, and we started researching parts and found that about 80 percent of what we needed was readily available.”

Dunithan suggested to Lucas that they just build a brand new one for him.

But rather than just building one, they came up with the idea of building 1,941 in honor of Shasta’s first year.

Lucas said, “There were some things that were hard to find. We had to get a casting made for the Shasta emblem on the front, and we replicated the door handles. Vendors really stepped up for us. For example, Hehr International, an RV window manufacturer, remade those awning style windows for us.”

Cadillac_ShastaLucas unveiled the 2015 reissue of a 1961 Shasta Airflyte on the opening day of 2014 RV Open House, and by noon the next day, the complete product run was completely sold out.

It was during the RV Open House that board member Mick Ferkey noticed the product and fell in love with it. Ferkey knew the museum already owned 1954 Shasta and thought a display of the 1954 Shasta alongside the reissue of the 1961 could be an exciting and educational exhibit for museum visitors.

The problem was that Shasta limited sales of the new model only to its own dealers, and Ferkey was not a Shasta dealer.

Ferkey talked to Lucas about his idea and ended up convincing him selling him one for display in the museum.

“I think it’s fantastic,” Lucas said.

“One thing that I’m honored to do is to direct such an iconic brand such as Shasta. So to have our reissue of the 1961 Shasta Airflyte sit beside a 1954 Shasta at the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum is exciting, and it’s also humbling.”

Museum visitors will find the new exhibit in the Go RVing Hall and will be able to compare the advances in enhancements to the RV lifestyle between these two historic travel trailers.
