And Still More July 2015 RV Manufacturer Recalls

Your recreational vehicle may be involved in a safety recall and may create a safety risk for you or your passengers. Safety defects must be repaired by a certified dealer at no cost to you. However, if left unrepaired, a potential safety defect in your vehicle could lead to injury or even death.

What is a recall?
When a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a recreational vehicle or item of RV equipment creates an unreasonable risk to safety or fails to meet minimum safety standards, the manufacturer is required to fix that vehicle or equipment at no cost to the consumer.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced 5 recall notices involving 5 recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers—Cruiser RV, Starcraft RV, Roadtrek Motorhomes, Keystone RV Company, and Allied Recreation Group.

Cruiser RV

CruiserCruiser RV (Cruiser) is recalling certain model year 2016 Stryker travel trailers manufactured March 23, 2015, to April 20, 2015. In the affected trailers, the studs that are used to attach the wheels to the axle hubs may break.

If the wheel studs break, the wheel could detach from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Cruiser will notify owners, and dealers will replace any affected wheel hub, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 24, 2015. Owners may contact Cruiser customer service at 1-866-277-5630. Cruiser’s number for this recall is 11043R & 11044R.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Starcraft RV

starcraftStarcraft RV (Starcraft) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 AR-ONE TT trailers and 2014-2016 Comet CT Hard Sided camping trailers, models 28V, 28P, 28R, 28S, 28V, 28W, BC, and BH, manufactured June 3, 2013, to February 6, 2015 and equipped with the Extreme Package Option. The affected trailers have Certification labels that incorrectly state a tire size of ST205/75R 14C when the actual tire size is LT235/75R 15C. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, “Certification.”

If the operator installs the incorrect tires due to the information on the certification label, vehicle handling could be affected, increasing the risk of a crash.

Starcraft will notify owners, and dealers will install a corrected label, free of charge. The recall began on July 17, 2015. Owners may contact Starcraft customer service at 1-800-945-4787. Starcraft’s number for this recall is 9902240.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Roadtrek Motorhomes

roadtrek_logoRoadtrek Motorhomes Inc. (Roadtrek) is recalling certain model year 2014 CS Adventurous, E-Trek, RS Adventurous, SS Agile, and TS Adventurous vehicles manufactured from September 18, 2013, through April 9, 2015, and built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis. The affected vehicles have electrical wiring connections under the front seats that can become dislodged or damaged and prevent the optional front seat SH9 Thorax air bags from deploying.

If the front thorax air bag fails to deploy in the event of a crash, the seat occupant has a increased risk of injury.

Roadtrek will notify owners, and dealers will modify the electrical connections, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Roadtrek customer service at 1-888-762-3873.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Keystone RV Company

Keystone-Rv-Co.-logoKeystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling certain model year 2013 Montana trailers, models 3100RL, 3150RL13, 3400RL, 3402RL, 3582RL, 3625RE, 3725RL, 3750FL and 3900FB, manufactured November 12, 2012, to January 30, 2013, and 2014 Mountaineer trailers, models 331RLT, 356TBF and 375FLF, manufactured August 21, 2013, to September 18, 2013. In all models except the Mountaineer 375FLF, the rear windows are labeled with an exit sticker, but the rear window is not intended to be a secondary emergency exit. With the Mountaineer 375FLF, the rear window is intended as the secondary emergency exit, but it may be blocked by the rear ladder.

In the event of an emergency, occupants could try to escape through the rear window, but would not be able to. This delay in their escape may increase the risk of injury.

Keystone has notified owners, and dealers will remove the emergency exit sticker from the windows that were not intended to be emergency exits. Mountaineer 375FLF vehicles will have the window replaced, so that egress section of the window is on the opposite side of where the ladder is installed. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on July 9, 2015. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-866-425-4369. Keystone’s number for this recall is 15-232.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov

Allied Recreation Group, Inc. (ARG)

argLogo_bigAllied Recreation Group, Inc. (ARG) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Fleetwood Southwind recreational vehicles, model 32 VS, manufactured April 16, 2014, to June 19, 2015. In the event of an emergency, the occupant’s exit from the vehicle may be delayed or prevented, increasing their risk of injury.

The affected vehicles, built on a Spartan Chassis, have fasteners that attach the stay rod (v-rod) to the rear drive axle that may not have been installed with thread locker or tightened in the correct sequence.

If the fasteners loosen, the stay rod may disconnect from the rear axle, allowing the rear axle to move freely, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Spartan will notify owners on behalf of Newmar, and dealers will replace the fasteners using thread lock, tightening them in the proper sequence and with the required torque values, free of charge. The Imagine travel trailer series is the follow up to the firm’s Reflection travel trailers and fifth wheels, flagship Solitude extended stay fifth wheels, and popular Momentum toy haulers.

Is it a spaceship on wheels? Is it a futuristic helicopter?

A wildly futuristic space-age vehicle, the Monopod 660 is a high-end luxury caravan with an extraordinary striking look. The name derives from the one piece monocoque body shell, a design technique taken from the automotive industry which allows stresses and strains on the vehicle to be carried by the outer skin.

The front section is reminiscent of a helicopter with its slanted separate windows and curved front, while the design allows for a pure shape with few visible joins.

Inside, the Monopod 660 feels like stepping into a boutique hotel from another age, with warm contrasting tones and rich woods. The Truma blown air heating system is used throughout, while the lounge area is large and well appointed with comfortable foam back rests.

Dicor Introduces Polar White TPO Roofing Color

Elkhart, Indiana-based Dicor Products has added a new “whiter than white” color choice to its DiFlex II TPO roofing materials for RV manufacturers.

epdm-tpoTPO is basically a plastic and comes in several colors and has a textured surface. TPO doesn’t weather the same way EPDM does, so you won’t have the white powder that gets on you when you work on the roof. Because TPO is a plastic, the roof is the same color all the way through. TPO roofing is glued down to the roof decking in the same way that EPDM is, but using a different adhesive.

The new polar white roofing material provides a greater cooling factor through a high reflectivity rating for RVs, according to a company news release.

Polar white joins the line of extra flexible, non-fleeced backed DiFlex II TPO roof coverings also offered in dove, grey, ivory, and tan.

“The superior reflectivity of the polar white finish really helps keep the heat off the RV,” said Tom Grubaugh, Dicor Products national OEM sales manager.

“Today, some of our OEM customers are taking heating and cooling efficiency into account in their product design and our new Polar White DiFlex II helps them achieve their goals.”

dicor-products-roofDicor Products has been a supplier of EPDM and TPO roofing for the RV industry for more than 20 years. Quick to adapt to changing OEM needs, Dicor Products currently offers the largest selection of roofing membranes and roof colors available for RVs, including its recent innovative offering of DiFlex II TPO membranes, according to the release.

Manufacturers find DiFlex II TPO to be a very flexible TPO membrane that is easy to install for snug, watertight fit on virtually any roofing surface. It is also compatible with all Dicor aftermarket cleaners, protectants, sealants, and bonding adhesives, and can be installed with Dicor’s matching lap sealants for a fully coordinated appearance.

Much like EPDM, DiFlex II remains flexible in cold weather and, unlike PVC and some TPO, resists hail damage and cracking even in cold weather. It is not affected by ponding water or environmental contaminants and is easily repairable throughout its lifetime.

DiFlex II comes with a 12-year limited warranty.

AmeriGO RV Club Suspending Operations

The AmeriGO RV Club notified its 50,000 consumer members as well as dealers, campgrounds, and other partners that, effective today (July 17) it is suspending business operations while still working to obtain financing for the fledgling national consumer club.

AmeriGO-RV-Club-LogoIn making the announcement, AmeriGO Chairman Joe McAdams said the interest from the RV industry and consumer market for the AmeriGO concept has been “very gratifying and extremely strong,” but the club’s management needed to suspend operations while it explored financing options.

“We still believe very strongly that the concept is much needed in our industry. We are continuing to search for additional funding or a suitable partner within the coming months,” McAdams stated, adding that AmeriGO officials will update members on further status changes as warranted.

AmeriGO was founded in 2013 by McAdams and fellow RV industry veterans Joe Daquino and Mike Schneider, all of whom are former executives of Ventura, California-based Affinity Group Inc.

The independent RV consumer club has been positioned as an affordable membership organization that cultivates a vibrant online community dedicated to RV enthusiasts throughout North America who enjoy benefits, services, and discounts via partnerships with companies across the industry, including resorts and campgrounds, RV dealers, and insurance, financing, and warranty providers.

“Our goal in creating AmeriGO is to build a trusted resource for products, services, and information that adds value and security for the RV enthusiast by providing access to and savings at our premier network of RV vendors, dealers, and campgrounds,” AmeriGO officials stated in September 2013 in announcing the formation of the club.

While it not that unusual for membership camping organizations to experience financial difficulties resulting in reduced services and camping options for its members, it is highly unusual to suspend operations during the first two years of operation.

One also wonders whether suspending operations and ceasing to operate as a viable company are, in this case, one and the same.

Unanswered questions remain. Are the membership camping organization’s financial difficulties due to a failed business model? Did the promoters fail to provide value to the network of RV business partners? Did the promoters over-compensate themselves? Will full disclosure to the membership be forthcoming?

RV Manufacturer Fined $5 Million Over Safety Violations

In an earlier post Vogel Talks RVing reported that Forest River Inc. was embroiled in a dispute with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over its handling of records related to product recalls, safety, and warranties.

forest-River-logoFollowing an investigation it opened September 30, 2014, the NHTSA found that Elkhart, Indiana-based RV manufacturer Forest River Inc. appeared to have violated its Early Warning Reporting obligations repeatedly.

Forest River Inc. is a division of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.

This past Thursday (July 9), NHTSA fined Forest River Inc. $5 million due to safety violations leaving consumers at risk of fire.

Regulators said Forest River was slow to report some required data and failed to swiftly launch two safety recalls after problems were found in nearly 1,000 of its travel trailers.

In the recalls, Forest River initially failed to order recalls immediately and instead just sent safety bulletins to its dealers about the problems. The company also failed to report everything to regulators as quickly as the law requires once it knew about problems.

According to NHTSA, Forest River failed to report the mishandling of recalls for a number of recreational vehicles—726 Rockwood and Flagstaff travel trailers and 200 Palomino travel trailers.

Regulators detected loose wiring that could lead to fire hazards in the Rockwood and Flagstaff vehicles and discovered a defect of the exhaust in the Palomino vehicles which could potentially raise carbon monoxide exposure and reduce fresh air intake.

Forest River Inc. will pay up to $30 million in additional fines if regulators find any additional violations in the next three years.

In 2014, the company generated $3.8 billion of revenue.

forest-River-logoForest River claims they are working with officials to resolve the inquiry and will hire an independent monitor to administer safety requirements and enhance security procedures. In addition, the company will hire an in-house consultant to oversee reporting operations as part of the settlement.

The company will adopt and promote “best practices” standards for the recreational vehicle industry and enforce its guidelines to become the industry model in safety.

“Safety is a critical shared responsibility, and when manufacturers fail to meet their responsibility, the Department will enforce the law,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said.

Forest River, Inc. was founded by Peter Liegl in 1996, which today makes all classes of recreational vehicles, cargo trailers, utility trailer, pontoon boats, light and medium-duty buses (primarily shuttle buses), portable offices, and structures to use for temporary schools.

The company operates 60 manufacturing facilities throughout the Mid West and West Coast and employs 5,400 workers.

forest-River-logoForest River currently manufactures motorhomes (Berkshire, Charleston, Forester, Georgetown, Lexington, Sunseeker, and Tsunami), towables (Cardinal, Cedar Creek, Cherokee, Day Dreamer, Flagstaff, r-pod, Rockwood, Salem, Sandpiper, Shamrock, Sierra, Surveyor, V-Cross, Wildcat, and XLR, Wildwood), park models (Kabana, Quailridge, and Summitt), and modular and hud homes (Sterling and Hart Homes).

Forest River is owned by Warren Buffett’s Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate. Berkshire Hathaway owns nearly 90 different subsidiaries, including clothing, furniture and jewelry firms. It also has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

Cool Trailers: From Vistabule To Ecco

In a day where many recreational vehicles can easily cost six-figures and measure 40-feet or more, some customers are looking for alternatives to the mass-produced recreational vehicles.

Life on the road can be enjoyed in a distinctly different, fun, and creative trailer in one of five ways:

Vistabule

Vistabule is a popular ‘Cab Forward’ teardrop trailer

Streamlined and weighing just 1,220 pounds, the Vistabule teardrop trailer can be towed behind nearly any small car.

Oversized windows and a cab-forward design set the Vistabule apart by offering panoramic views that no other teardrop trailer offers. You’re oriented to the front where all the action is. The huge window affords a view to the world as well as the sky.

The queen sized bed converts in seconds into a delightful sitting space with a fold up table and the smartly fitted kitchen allows people to prepare meals while protected from rain and sun.

Colim

The brain child of German designer Christian Susana, the futuristic looking Colim (an acronym meaning Colors of Life in Motion) is an attractive combination of car and a caravan camper—the perfect example of an intelligent motorhome design. The Colim motorhome allows drivers to detach the cockpit so they can drive around the resort more efficiently. The vehicle has a top speed of 90mph.

What makes the DoubleBack unique is just how much space it actually has, and how easily you can expand or contract its size to fit your recreational needs.

The Ecco is set to revolutionize the humble camper van with space-age design that includes collapsible walls and a flip-top upper deck.

A futuristic camper van, the Ecco doubles in size by flipping open “like a Swiss Army knife.”

Since space is the main theme, in design and concept, passengers enter the 15-foot-long electric vehicle from the rear through a huge stairway that folds into the ceiling. The space is then transformed with a flip-out top deck, expandable walls, and fold-down seats for extra room.

The eco-friendly camper van can sleep a family of five and boasts a kitchen, bathroom, and lounge area.
