Torklift Introduces GlowStep Revolution

Sumner, Washington-based Torklift International introduces a “top-secret new product”, the GlowStep Revolution, available in applications ranging from two to six steps.

banner_gs“The GlowStep Revolution is a scissor step made especially for towables including fifth wheels,” explained Torklift International General Manager Jay Taylor, in a news release.

“Previously, our industry leading GlowStep was only available for truck camper applications, now it works with towables and side-entry truck campers.”

“GlowStep Revolution is the only scissor step available for towables that eliminates that ‘diving board’ feeling felt when walking down a factory step because the factory step does not reach the ground. There is usually a large gap at the bottom of the factory step between the step and the ground,” Taylor said.

“The GlowStep Revolution is the only ‘Earth to RV’ step giving the customer the best stability.”

This new step product also prevents customers from having to haul around inconvenient and often dangerous quick fixes for their factory steps.

“Recently, we visited a campground to observe homemade solutions people create to help their steps reach the ground,” he said.

Composed of 100 percent aluminum and stainless steel
Composed of 100 percent aluminum and stainless steel

“We saw that people used pallets, cinder blocks, plastic step stools, and wooden blocks to stabilize their step and help them reach the ground easier. Those solutions are bulky and not simple to set up, plus they take up a great deal of storage space inside the RV during transit.”

In a matter of minutes, the GlowStep Revolution bolts to where the factory step would be housed. It folds up for storage and locks into place, typically giving a greater deal of ground clearance than the factory step. Additionally, it is roughly 50 percent lighter than the factory step.

It also features the All Terrain Landing Gear. The landing gear is a set of leveling feet on the step that can be adjusted through a push button mechanism on uneven terrain.

“The landing gear allows the customer to park on any kind of terrain without having to be concerned about pin-pointing their step deployment area on a level space,” Taylor explained. “They keep the step level and sturdy.”
The All Terrain Landing Gear can also be purchased separately and retrofitted onto any pre-existing GlowStep application.

The original GlowStep made for rear entry truck camper applications will not be discontinued. The GlowStep Revolution features a new mounting bracket that allows it to be mounted to towables and side-entry truck campers.

“When we visited the campground we also learned something interesting about campers who travel with their dogs,” Taylor added.

“Dogs typically have a hard time getting up and down factory steps because they are often grated like a cheese grater leading to their toe nails getting caught in the step. The GlowStep Revolution does not feature this grate design, allowing pets to walk up and down it comfortably.”

The GlowStep Revolution is rated up to 375 pounds when used with the GlowGuide handrail and features an 8-inch step depth making it compliant with RV Industry Association manufacturer step design requirements.  It also features bushing bearings at each hinge point for maximum stability and longevity. It is made in the United States and comes with a lifetime warranty.

The GlowStep Revolution is available for pre-order.

The step is available for sale July 8. The first 50 customers to pre-order the step will receive their choice of free SafeStep pet barrier panels or a Dirt Destroyer shoe cleaning attachment. Customers who purchase a GlowStep or GlowStep Revolution with a GlowGuide handrail between now and August 14, will also be eligible for a $20 rebate toward a GlowGuide handrail.

B&W Introduces New 16K Patriot Slide Hitch

Humboldt, Kansas-based B&W Trailer Hitches announced that it will introduce its new 16,000-pound Patriot rail-mounted fifth wheel slider hitch at the 2014 SEMA Show, the premier automotive specialty products trade event, in Las Vegas from November 4-11, 2014.

B&W Introduces New 16K Patriot Slide Hitch
B&W Introduces New 16K Patriot Slide Hitch

The Patriot 16K RVK3270 Patriot rail-mounted slider hitch complements B&W’s full line of hitches and is built to exacting specifications for smooth, flawless, and virtually inaudible operation, according to a company news release.

Unlocking the slider hitch is made effortless, even on irregular terrain, via the locking mechanism’s gear-reduced cam ratio design, which gives the user mechanical advantage.

The Patriot’s two, solid one-inch tubular steel carriage rails are designed with sturdy center supports that prevent the rails from deforming or binding as a result of flexing under load. Hourglass-shaped rollers convey the carriage mechanism with fluid motion, regardless of topography. Once unlocked, the hitch is free to slide back into its maneuvering position and afterward, it glides up to its locked position just in front of the rear axle.

“Traditional slider hitches are known to make a bit of noise, and this can be disconcerting to some operators,” said Don Collins, president of DC’s RV Centers.

“With its precise fittings and smooth, quiet operation, B&W’s Patriot 16K slider will enhance the end-user’s towing experience.”

B&W Introduces New 16K Patriot Slide Hitch
B&W Introduces New 16K Patriot Slide Hitch

B&W’s versatile new 16,000-pound Patriot rail-mounted slide hitch accommodates 12 inches of slide and is perfect for popular short-bed pickup trucks that allow less travel distance to the cab. Vertical adjustments can be made from 17 inches to 19 inches, allowing ample clearance for taller truck-bed walls. The Patriot 16K slider will fit on all industry standard mounting rails.

The Patriot 16K slider makes it easy to engage and disengage a trailer, as well. Thanks to its cam-lock design and three-quarter-inch-thick wrap-around jaws, an operator can couple or uncouple any trailer, regardless of the lay of the land. Pivot arms feature tough polyurethane bushings that allow the engaged coupler head to pivot smoothly, and the fully articulating head is cushioned by an integrated leaf spring.

“The Patriot 16K rail-mounted fifth wheel slider hitch is an American-made alternative to the offshore-manufactured slider hitches that have proliferated in recent years,” said Travis McCall, product engineer for B&W Trailer Hitches.

“Our hitch is engineered to operate as a finely tuned system, and we think users will be very impressed with the fit, finish, operation and overall ergonomics of our newest hitch design.”

B&W’s new Patriot rail-mounted slider is made of top-quality, American AISI 1018 steel and is powder coated for a tough, durable finish.

The 16K Patriot RVK3270 rail-mounted fifth wheel slider hitch has been tested and meets or exceeds the J2638 standard for a 16,000-pound vehicle tow rating (VTR). As in any towing scenario, B&W strongly recommends that users never exceed the Patriot 16K slider’s VTR.

B&W Trailer Hitches

patriot16klogoB&W Trailer Hitches specializes in designing and engineering trailer hitches and aftermarket truck/trailer accessories, and the company’s workforce makes all of its products entirely in Humboldt, Kansas.

B&W was formed in 1987, in a small garage in Humboldt, Kansas by Roger Baker and Joe Works. Roger had seen declining demand for his skills as a classic car restorer and Joe had fallen on hard times with the family farm.

Together, they started B&W Custom Truck Beds, Inc. with the goal of building the highest quality truck beds on the market. The truck beds proved exceptional, with custom headache racks, toolboxes, matched paint, and hand pin striping. Business grew quickly as word spread about the quality and good looks of B&W’s quality beds.

Together, Joe and Roger designed a hitch with a ball that could be pulled out, turned over, and stowed beneath the bed. The mounting framework they designed bolted to the truck frame and required no welding, drilling, or bed removal to install.

This new hitch, the Turnover Ball, revolutionized the gooseneck hitch industry, as this type of ball storage and mounting system is used by nearly every gooseneck hitch manufacturer today.

Lippert Introduces Power Step For Motorhomes

Elkhart, Indiana-based Lippert Components Inc. introduced its new aluminum Tread Lite Power Step for motorhomes.

Tread Lite Power Step
Tread Lite Power Step

The lightweight Tread Lite Power Step’s all new solid-drive mechanism allows it to extend and retract quicker, while providing more stability.

“For years the RV industry has been asking for a better, firmer power step, and our design team has again exceeded expectations,” said LCI Vice President of RV Sales Andy Murray, in a news release.

“The new Tread Lite Power Step has an upgraded drive system, coupled with a sleek European look. It is also designed to stand up against the elements with durable aluminum step treads.”

LCI’s research and development team collected customer feedback and conducted extensive research and testing to develop this premium Power Step, the company said.

LCI Motorized Sales Manager Marty McManus described the Power Step as quicker, stronger, and much more stable.

“We started from scratch on the design of this step and made substantial improvements,” he said. “The step features attractive aluminum extruded step treads which deploy and retract noticeably faster.”

The Tread Lite Power Step also features obstruction-sensing technology for added safety. A smart sensor monitors for obstructions during step extension and stops deployment if any are found.

McManus said the Tread Lite Power Step will be made to standard dimensions to fit current designs, but its extruded construction allows for custom sizes as well.

He added, “For those who really want to set themselves apart, the linkage brackets can be color powder coated as well.”

The Tread Lite Power Step for motorhomes will also be available to LCI’s aftermarket customers.

BEFLEXX Introduces New RV Central Vacuum System

The Netherlands-based BEFLEXX introduced its new central vacuum for RV, boat, and truck applications.

BEFLEXX built-in-vacuum
BEFLEXX built-in-vacuum

Designed from the ground up, the BEFLEXX 120-volt central vacuum is designed and engineered to fit both form and function.

With a weight of 7 pounds, crafted from ultra-strong PC+ABS, it is the most lightweight central vacuum system on the market, according to a company news release.

Engineered to make cleaning in small, midsized, and large RVs, boats, and trucks fast and hassle-free, it offers effective pick up for normal household dust and dirt. The BF1000-120 is equipped with HEPA dust bags, one of the best methods of eliminating airborne allergens.

Other benefits include:

  • High-efficiency motor that offers high performance using 30 percent less energy than the traditional central vacuum system motor
  • Plug-and-play installation; it can be fully installed and working within 10 minutes

During development no concessions were made in terms of power, safety, or dust bag capacity, according to the news release. It has been tested and certified to CSA regulations, and is available with a 24-volt motor and 230-volt motor (Europe).

The high-efficiency motor delivers fade-free performance with no loss of suction using 30 percent less energy. It gives end users the cleaning muscle they need to create a clean and hygienic living environment during vacation or work.

BEFLEXX built-in-vacuum
BEFLEXX built-in-vacuum

Installment of the BEFLEXX vacuum system is easy to achieve, requiring dimensions of only 11 inches by 6.7 inches by 6.7 inches. Anyone can perform the install in just four steps and start vacuuming.

Users simply decide where to position the motor unit and inlet valve, then mount the mounting bracket with four supplied screws.

Installers need to ensure there is enough room between the floor, ceiling, and corner sidewall for adequate ventilation for motor.

The company recommends installers use a hollow drill of 2.36 inches in diameter to install the inlet valve, then bring the motor unit into place and connect motor with inlet valve using the supplied 23.6-inch long Triflex hose.

Finally, connect the supplied wire between the unit and inlet valve which completes a low-voltage electrical circuit.

Once installed, plugging in the extendable vacuum hose into an inlet valve will automatically turn on the vacuum cleaner.

To turn off the motor unit, unplug the hose from the inlet.

The BEFLEXX BF1000-120 can be used on all RVs, boats, and trucks, and is available now for purchase.

Equalizer Systems Leads Days Corp into Second Century

Equalizer Systems is leading Days Corporation into its next century as the fastest growing division of the Elkhart, Indiana-based company that marks its 100th anniversary this year.

Equalizer Systems Inc. introduces its Stabi-Lite automatic electric RV stabilizing system to the RV dealer and retail aftermarket
Equalizer Systems Inc. introduces its Stabi-Lite automatic electric RV stabilizing system to the RV dealer and retail aftermarket

Equalizer Systems began in 1990 with the acquisition of a hydraulic leveling company from Nebraska.

Leveling systems at that time were changing from a dealer installed item to a manufacturer standard feature.

With so many RV companies around Elkhart, the possibilities for the new company looked promising, the company stated in a news release.

Equalizer’s subsequent development of landing legs for the commercial (racecar, horse, utility) fifth wheel trailer market, along with the development and patent of its Auto-Level leveling system, gave the division a great start.

Today, with the expanded designs in slideouts, growth in RV fifth wheels, and renewed interest in the smaller Class C motorized market, Equalizer has experienced growth in the RV market as well as in the other markets it serves.

Equalizer occupies more than 100,000 square feet of manufacturing and installation space in Northern Indiana, and considers itself uniquely positioned to provide the service and support of a small company with the resources of a large corporation.

John Days started his company in 1913 as a local delivery service using a horse and wagon.

By the mid ’30s it had become a successful regional truck line called Days Transfer. By the early ’60s, the company also included such services as warehousing and heavy machinery moving.

Equalizer Stabi-Lite
Equalizer Stabi-Lite

In 1988 the company was renamed Days Corporation and Jim Sproatt was added as a minority owner.

Owner Jim Sproatt, who joined Days Corp. as a minority owner in 1988, noted that Equalizer’s success is part of an ethic that has kept Days Corp. growing and going for the last 100 years.

“We believe our company is 100 years old for three reasons. Our diversification, our tradition of excellent service, and the loyalty of customers built on the development of strong business relationships,” said Sproatt.

“These relationships tell people that we’re in this for the long haul. This isn’t about doing one job and sending a bill. It’s about building solutions through these relationships that will to serve customers long-term. The way we have diversified and expanded our services over the years is, for the most part, a direct result of these relationships. The company has always looked to provide what regional businesses, including RV businesses, needed.”

Along with its Equalizer business, Days has seen a growing list of accounts with its export packing division.

“We see significant interest in the exporting of boats and RVs to Europe, Australia and even China,” said Sproatt.

“We’re proud of our associations with the RV industry and pleased to have grown along with it in recent years. With the RV community, and with our many other industrial partners, we look forward to a new century of service and growth,” he added

B&W Hitches Introduces Gooseneck for Ram 3500 Trucks

Humboldt, Kansas-based B&W Trailer Hitches announces that it has begun shipping its new GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch to its nationwide distribution network.

B&W logoThe new hitch features the popular B&W Turnoverball design and provides the same ease of installation and simplicity of use that the North American trailer-hauling marketplace has come to know and expect, said Beth Barlow, marketing director, in a company news release.

“Many 2013 RAM 3500 owners have been stunned to discover that the accessories necessary for their factory-installed gooseneck trailer hitch to function are simply not yet available,” she explained.

“Preliminary data also suggests that if owners did not specify RAM’s towing package, they might have to pay for the bed of their new truck to be removed in order to install the MOPAR gooseneck hitch. Either way, the RAM owner’s hitch is rendered inoperable because there is currently no hitch ball available.”

This unfortunate set of circumstances has caused inconvenience and confusion among customers, said Hayden Elder, principle of Elder Dodge in Athens, Texas.

“Our customers prefer the B&W brand over any other gooseneck hitch, and I’m grateful that we have their GNRK 1314 hitch available now, as the RAM 3500s begin hitting our lot,” he added.

An online video demonstrates that the GNRK 1314 installs much like the other B&W gooseneck trailer hitch kits that have become No. 1 sellers among truck dealers and end-users alike, said Barlow.

B&W’s GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch
B&W’s GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch

B&W’s new hitch is comparably priced with its other gooseneck offerings, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $494, and the hitch fits on any 2013 RAM 3500 without a factory-installed hitch prep package.

The new hitch also comes with the B&W signature Turnoverball feature, which allows the hitch ball to invert in its mounting socket when not in use to stow securely and flush with the bed of the truck.

In contrast to B&W’s Turnoverball design, the RAM’s OE hitch ball, when it eventually becomes available, will need to be removed from its mounting socket and stowed elsewhere. Removing the hitch ball from its mounting location leaves it prone to being lost, misplaced, and generally becoming a storage nuisance, said Barlow.

“Since we introduced the Turnoverball in 1992, gooseneck users have grown accustomed to turning over and stowing the hitch ball where they use it, and it’s hard for us to imagine why the OE would revert to an outdated, less practical design,” said Travis McCall, product engineer for B&W Trailer Hitches.

“Our new GNRK 1314 honors B&W’s reputation for creating easy-to-install hitches that are easy to use as well.”

B&W’s GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch has been carefully engineered to match the towing capacity of the 2013 RAM 3500. The product has been extensively tested and is certified as meeting the vehicle tow rating (VTR), said McCall, noting that, as with any towing scenario, B&W strongly recommends that users never exceed a VTR.

“For over a quarter of a century, we’ve enjoyed serving truck dealers of all brands, who love installing our hitch products for their customers,” said Barlow.

“Our quick assessment of this needs gap and our rapid response to fill it are a testament to B&W’s dedication to our RAM dealer customers, their customers and the towing marketplace at large.”

B&W Trailer Hitches specializes in designing and engineering trailer hitches and aftermarket truck/trailer accessories, and has a proud reputation as a U.S.-based manufacturer and innovator, she added.

The company’s workforce makes all of its products entirely in Humboldt, Kansas. The design of the GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch has a patent pending. A complete product catalog can be accessed on the B&W website.

BW GNRK web_tob_in_truck_bedB&W’s GNRK 1314 aftermarket gooseneck trailer hitch can be used to replace the product designation 53W 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Towing Prep Group, for the 2013 RAM 3500.

A fifth wheel hitch is expected to be introduced within several weeks.

Girard Tankless Water Heater Market Share Gains Continue

In an earlier report I indicated that San Clemente, California-based Girard Products, a leader in RV tankless water heater technology, continued to increase its market share.

Girard_endless_hot_water-copyThe Girard Products GSWH-1 Tankless Water Heater was introduced to the RV aftermarket in early 2011 and less than one year later had achieved more than 20 percent share of that market.

Now, one and one-half years later, Girard Products reports that their 2nd Generation Tankless Water Heater, the GSWH-1M, continues to make significant market gains, both with OEMs and in the aftermarket.

More than 30 brands of major RVs are now offering the GSWH-1M on their 2013 and 2014 models either as an option or as standard equipment, according to a company news release.

In the first quarter 2013, the aftermarket sales of the GSWH-1M have exceeded the aftermarket sales of the entire previous year.

Girard GSWH-1M Tankless Water Heater
Girard GSWH-1M Tankless Water Heater

The GSWH-1M is now on target to capture more than a 20 percent share of all water heaters sold in the aftermarket, according to Jerry Rennert, general manager, Girard Products.

“OEM and aftermarket customers have come to recognize and appreciate the GSWH-1M for its innovative, patented design, which offers endless hot water in an efficient, compact, and lightweight package, and it continues to be the only tankless water heater which includes ‘freeze-protection’ as a standard feature,” said Rennert.

How a Tankless Water Heater Works

  1. A hot water tap is turned on
  2. Cold water enters the heater
  3. A water flow sensor detects that water is flowing
  4. The microprocessor based circuit board automatically ignites the burner
  5. Water circulates through the heat exchanger
  6. The water is heated to the set temperature
  7. When the tap is turned off, the unit shuts down

It’s the Flow that Makes it Go!

Girard_induced_draft_diagram1The GSWH-1M Tankless Water Heater Operation is literally based on the flow of water and the setting of the GMC Dial.

That is to say, that the temperature of the hot water coming out of the hot water faucet is determined by the hot water flow; the faster the flow, the cooler the water; the slower the flow, the hotter the water.

By adjusting the flow and/or adjusting the GMC Dial, RVers can have endless hot water!

The Girard Tankless RV Water Heater features include:

  • Instant/Endless Hot Water—an unlimited supply of hot water when you need it
  • No Recovery Time—there is no tank to run out of hot water so you can shower all day if you want
  • Energy Efficient—uses 60 percent less LP Gas than Storage Tank Model Water Heaters
  • Temperature Rise—20° to 70° depending on the GMC Dial setting and the water flow
  • Induced Draft—Improves combustion, and efficiency; not affected by high elevations
  • Adjustable BTU Burner—for improved efficiency, you can adjust the burner from a Hi-Flame (36,000 BTUs) all the way to a Low Flame (18,000 BTUs) depending on the incoming water temperature
  • Lightweight—over 65 percent lighter (50–100 pounds less) than conventional tank model water heaters
  • State of the Art Electronic Ignition—no pilot lights or manual burners to keep lighting or adjusting
  • Compact—fits into any existing water heater cut-out opening (overall dimensions are 12.5 iches X 12.5 inches X 15.5 inches
  • No Anode—no tank means you never have to worry about corrosion eating away at the tank.
  • No By-Pass Valve Needed—no storage tank to by-pass when winterizing the unit
  • CSA Approved
  • Two-Year Warranty

The Girard GSWH-1M Tankless Water Heater is being offered on a number of new RVs from manufacturers including Forest River, Jayco, Lance, Monaco, Outdoor RV, and Winnebago.

Equalizer Introduces Stabi-Lite RV Stabilizing System

Elkhart, Indiana-based Equalizer Systems Inc. introduces its Stabi-Lite automatic electric RV stabilizing system to the RV dealer and retail aftermarket.

Results of OEM assessments have shown the Stabi-Lite system to be an excellent, durable solution for Class C and Class B motorhomes and other smaller RVs that can experience a noticeable lean and constant swaying when RVers walk around inside with the slide room extended, according to Jason Loose, outside sales representative for Equalizer Systems.

Stabi-Lite eliminates this situation by providing a solid, level platform through a system that deploys automatically with a single touch, said Loose.

“Providing this kind of stability makes Stabi-Lite the perfect aftermarket application for the lighter Ford, Chevrolet, and Sprinter chassis,” stated Loose.

“In fact, it is the only custom-fit, bolt-on, electric stabilizing system for the increasingly popular Sprinter chassis.

Weighing less than 80 pounds, it is a very fuel-efficient and green add-on, including its low-profile design that decreases height required by traditional systems, adding to the aerodynamic profile of contemporary RVs.

“Most attractively for the aftermarket, Stabi-Lite is designed to be easy and quick to install with a chassis-specific clamp style mount that requires no welding or drilling,” continued Loose. ”

Anyone with basic mechanical skills should be able to install the whole system in about two hours.

RVers will also find the system to be an exceptional value as an affordable alternative to more expensive hydraulic leveling systems.

“Stabi-Lite has received rave reviews from our RV manufacturing customers,” said Loose.

“So we thought the time was right to bring to the aftermarket this simple and affordable solution for the instability people can feel in a smaller slide-out RV.

“Furthermore, Equalizer is constantly designing custom brackets for additional applications as well, and we expect Stabi-Lite to become an attractive system for race trailers and other special uses.”

Worth Pondering…

The RV lifestyle is like nothing else.

It’s leaving home, exploring America, and yet bringing your home along with you!

Stopping at a wayside picnic area, preparing lunch in your kitchen.

It’s sleeping in your own bed every night, yet waking up to a new vista each morning!

The sounds of a crackling campfire; of a mountain stream, of frogs, and crickets.

It’s families drawn closer; it’s retirees being rewarded for many years of labor.
