Rand McNally Introduces All-New RV GPS

Just in time for Labor Day getaways, Rand McNally has introduced its third-generation RV GPS device.

Redesigned inside and out, the RVND 7730 LM provides all-new hardware, a faster processor, two new graphical user interface options, with improved map appearance. Bringing together Rand McNally’s award-winning navigation and new features such as Toll Cost estimates and Advanced Lane Guidance, the RVND device delivers leading-edge technology and tools specifically designed for RVers.

“Rand McNally’s RVND was the first navigation device designed specifically for RVers. With this next generation device, we’ve incorporated an all-new look but more importantly, new features to better help RVers get the most out of their on-the-road adventures,” said Stephen Fletcher, CEO of Rand McNally.

The device features a new, sleeker hardware design with a 7-inch screen—rugged and large for any RV dashboard. Inside, the RVND has faster processing speed, allowing for quicker route calculation, point of interest searches, route comparisons, and screen-to-screen transitions.

New navigation options give RVers more assistance and the ability to further customize routes:

Estimated toll road costs are now included for more informed trip planning.

More Advanced Lane Guidance instruction, combined with an increased number of enhanced Junction Views, goes beyond just turns and shows the best lanes in which to drive when approaching a turn or heading toward a complicated intersection.

And drivers may avoid areas permanently such as heavily congested city areas—or temporarily—to accommodate closures of bridges or other roads.

The onboard mapping has been upgraded to include improved text and road shields, and new coloration for certain reference points such as shopping centers and parks. There are two new color schemes for the maps, giving RVers even more personalization options.

To further customize the devices, RVers can choose between two new interface options—”Ice” (with a white background) and “Carbon” (with a steel grey background). Users also may choose the familiar “Classic” design interface, from prior generations of the device. The new, proprietary, color-saturated icons in the design were created by Rand McNally making features easy to recognize with just a glance.

The 7730 LM device includes extensive updates to features such as:

The addition of the latest Rand McNally Best of the Road towns with roadside attractions, dining, and historical sites.

A complete update of campgrounds—with 1,521 additions—including Good Sam campgrounds, public and commercial campgrounds, and Good Sam-rated campgrounds.

An updated cross-reference to the new 2015 Rand McNally Road Atlas, with emergency and roadside assistance information by state.

A comprehensive update of RV parking including rest stops and welcome centers, travel centers with RV-friendly amenities, and stores such as Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.

In addition, Rand McNally has incorporated new features and thousands of updates derived from “Tell Rand”, Rand McNally’s proprietary feedback loop for RVND users. For example, multi-stop trip planning now provides the detail of upcoming legs of the journey color-coded for easy differentiation, allowing for easy analysis of trip segments. And, with a one-click selection, drivers may hide buttons on the display to provide a larger view of the map.

The RVND 7730 LM includes Lifetime Map updates and the ability to switch over to car routing. The device is Wi-Fi connected, allowing for up-to-the moment information along a route such as current fuel prices, weather, and traffic.

The new RVND 7730 LM device is available at RV dealers and other retail locations nationwide, and in online stores such as amazon.com, bestbuy.com, and walmart.com.

Retail Price: $349.99

The Open Road & The Great American Road Trip

More than 20 million Americans will travel in RVs throughout the summer months, heading to the nation’s 16,000-plus campgrounds and enjoying time outdoors with family and friends.

Rand McNally The Open Road
Rand McNally The Open Road

According to a recent survey of RV owners by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), 66 percent of RV owners intend to use their RVs more this summer than they did last year, and 28 percent will use theirs the same amount.

Road trips have long remained a classic American pastime, and with the increasing popularity of RV travel these popular driving adventures won’t be going out of style anytime soon.

That’s because there’s no better way to experience the charming waterfront towns, stunning vistas and rugged cliffs that dot America’s varied landscape than from behind the wheel of a recreational vehicle.

The Great American Road Trip is steeped in lore going back to the days of Route 66.

There is an unlimited variety of scenic routes all boasting incredible sights including the stunning National Parks such as Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, and Mesa Verde.

There are the towns of the Wild West, like Tombstone and Dodge City, the nation’s uniquely colorful and lively party sports like New Orleans and Las Vegas, and smaller but wonderfully charming cities that might otherwise evade travelers such as Santa Fe and Austin.

Rand McNally The Open Road
Rand McNally The Open Road

There’s the Gulf Coast, Texas Hill Country, the Great Plains, Sonoran Desert, Rocky Mountains, Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Lakes, and the Golden Isles.

There are stark deserts, high peaks, endless sand dunes, broad rivers, and every sort of stunning natural beauty.

Every step of the way there are unique regional foods from slow smoked Texas barbecue to Cajun and Creole cooking to deep dish pizza.

Finally, there is endless roadside Americana, from giant balls of twine to rocket ships, all sorts of unique attractions and outdoor adventures.

Whether done in six or 60 days, the Great American Road Trip is a seminal experience, and one that is worth doing over and over again.

So pack the RV and get ready to embark on your summer road trip.

And just in time for Father’s Day and the 2014 summer travel season, Rand McNally has released a perfect gift for Dad, Granddad, and others who love their road trips: A limited edition boxed gift set called The Open Road: Rand McNally and the Story of the Great American Road Trip.

The Open Road is a nostalgic journey through transportation milestones, auto innovations, and roadside iconography — with some modern-day tools to help plan and memorialize the family road trip.

The set contains a 32-page book, The Open Road, giving an overview of motorists, road-side Americana, and the birth of the road trip; an up-to-date mid-size Road Atlas; an attractive, ready-to-frame 26.75-by-39-inch wall map poster with the U.S. road network; and a gift box to hold all the items.

Rand McNally The Open Road
Rand McNally The Open Road

Peruse The Open Road book, which is part of the set, to discover the origin of the U.S. highway numbering system, the development of services (“filling” stations, drive-in diners, roadside inns and more) to support the growing number of road-trippers, and the development of the RV lifestyle. From the first cross-country trips of the 1900s to the Mid-Century “Golden Age” through to the high-tech road-culture of the 21st-century, this book takes the reader on a journey that spans generations of road trips.

Among other tidbits, the book explores:

How the drive between New York and San Francisco was reduced from 63 days to less than 7

How the family car evolved from the Model T to the SUV

When the so-called Tin Can Tourists become intrepid RVers

Why a depot hack would be on the lookout for a Sterling Streamliner

What makes U.S. Patent 1909537 so entertaining

Who was the Uniroyal Lady?

The Open Road Box Set: The Story of the Great American Road Trip is available at select Walmart and Books-A-Million locations as well as online at randmcnally.com and on Amazon for a suggested price of $14.99.

Worth Pondering…

The open road is a beckoning, a strangeness, a place where a man can lose himself.

Rand McNally Releases Significant Enhancement to RV GPS App

Rand McNally released a significant update to its highly rated RV GPS app, the first such iOS application for iPad designed for navigating recreational vehicles.

rvgps_ipad_splashThe RV GPS app routing considers road, bridge, and tunnel restrictions for propane -on –board, as well as RV-prohibited roads.

In the release, available to all current users, Rand McNally has included significant new features that allow drivers to choose between a primary and alternate route, manage and track fuel costs, and easily search for local information, according to a company news release.

Following is a rundown of the new features:

Real-time fuel prices and logs: With market-leading fuel price data, this feature provides diesel and gas prices at stops along a route or near any location. Fuel prices and fuel stop icons can be shown on the map and in list format, viewable by brand, price, or distance to location. Additionally, the feature includes fuel logs that automatically calculate fuel economy for a route, and can be viewed by month and by quarter.

Integrated local search: This feature expands the ability to find points of interest on the device, using a keyword search, such as ‘burger’ or a category or business name. Once a location is found the app shows a description, address, and phone number. With one tap, an RV-specific route to that location is generated.

Compare Routes: It’s great to have options. Compare Routes provides a primary route and a reasonable alternate, allowing the driver to choose. Both routes are presented on a map for quick review.

In addition to new features, the release includes a full road map update for the U.S. and Canada.

rvgps_app_4_lgThe update includes:

52,000 changes that impact RV routing, including enhancements to parkways, weight restriction and vertical clearance updates.

Significantly enhanced speed limit information.

Updates and additions to numerous points of interest important to RVers such as commercial campgrounds and ratings; overnight parking information; dealer and repair locations; rest areas with RV-friendly parking; dump stations and RV-friendly travel centers.

17,000 new roadside attractions and Rand McNally’s Best of the Road finalist towns.

An updated Road Atlas e-book, as part of the app.

The RV GPS App is rated more than four stars on the iTunes store, and is compatible with iOS 4.0 and higher.

Turn-by-turn navigation is enabled for iPad cellular models, but requires a GPS accessory for Wi-Fi only models.

Rand McNally Launches 2013 Best of the Road

The most successful tourism campaign to discover Small Town America is back!

RandMcNally-62265-rm-botr-logo-new-mdOnce again, Rand McNally is searching for the Best Small Towns in America. This year, Rand McNally teams up with two new partners, Good Sam Club and Geocaching.com.

With these new partnerships, the Best of the Road program kicked off this week and is sure to provide excitement, inspiration, and an increase in travelers interested in visiting America’s best small towns, according to a news release.

Winning towns in six categories will receive a FREE custom iPhone App and online travel guide developed by Rand McNally, coverage in the 2015 Road Atlas, billions of media impressions, and thousands of new visitors.

In 2012, with over 700 towns participating and over 1 billion media impressions generated, thousands of road travelers and small town residents encouraged friends, family, and fellow residents to vote for their favorite town in five different categories: Most Beautiful, Most Fun, Most Patriotic, Friendliest, and Best for Food.

“The Best of the Road program put us on the map in a way that no amount of traditional advertising could,” said Kim Huston, President of the Nelson County Economic Development Agency, representing Bardstown, Kentucky.

RandMcNally-62265-rm-botr-banner-original“We have received so many national accolades, visits, and notoriety because of Best of the Road. Best of the Road showcased what our community is truly about, and why it should be part of your journey. People are driving 100 miles out of their way to visit with us. Local businesses shared that the recognition of our town as the ‘Most Beautiful’ in 2012 has led to significant increases in revenues, and our residents are even more proud to hail from Bardstown, Kentucky—the Most Beautiful Small Town in America!”

This summer, Best of the Road will again ask America to vote for the small towns that everyone should visit. But this year will be better than ever, with a new category and more online and social media interaction as Best of the Road goes all-virtual! Enhancements to Best of the Road 2013 include:

  • New website featuring a simple path to registration and easy voting features
  • Increased integration with social media
  • New category—Best for Geocaching, sponsored by Geocaching.com

“The addition of two new partners this year brings a great combination of inspiration and trip-planning, and a new way to experience a small town—all via technology,” says Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally.

“Our new digital product offerings for CVBs and DMOs, in addition to our partnerships with Good Sam and Geocaching.com provide tools to optimize the trip experience. Between Good Sam’s online trip planner, where travelers create a road trip and download it to the Good Sam GPS device for navigation, and Geocaching.com, which promotes pre-planned GeoTours within a location to attract the Geocaching community, we’ve combined forces to help destinations showcase the best that their towns have to offer.”

Program Details

Rand McNally 2014 Road AtlasJuly 1 through September 3, 2013, nominations will be accepted, and the competition to capture the most votes in each of the six categories (Most Beautiful, Most Fun, Most Patriotic, Friendliest, Best for Food, and Best for Geocaching) will take place.

Five finalists will be selected in each category by a panel of travel experts based on a number of criteria.

Finalists and winning towns will be featured in Good Sam Club’s Road Trip Planner, a new online tool that helps road-trippers organize and plan their trips and the stops along the way.

Also new this year:  the winning town in each category will receive a FREE custom online travel guide and iPhone app developed by Rand McNally and powered by Best of the Road. Additionally, the winning Best for Geocaching town will receive a FREE GeoTour, courtesy of Geocaching.com. Geocachers from around the world will be able to use the Geocaching smartphone app to learn about the town’s best places via strategically placed geocaches.

Rand McNally Introduces Outdoor Handheld GPS

Rand McNally introduces its first handheld/bike mounted outdoor GPS device for hiking, biking, geocaching, and more.

Rand McNally’s Foris 850
Rand McNally’s Foris 850

The Rand McNally’s Foris 850 comes loaded with millions of miles of high-quality street and trail maps, a sturdy bike mount, and an easy-to-use interface with on-device help.

Announced at the Outdoor Retailer show, Winter Market, the Foris 850 has been in beta testing and reviews by outdoor enthusiasts since January, the company noted in a press release. Received favorably, the Foris 850 is the result of collaboration between Rand McNally and Falk Outdoor Navigation, a business unit of United Navigation Limited.

Rand McNally’s Foris 850 map screen
Rand McNally’s Foris 850 map screen

“The Foris is designed to provide a ‘trail ready’ experience out of the box with everything included to get outside and go,” explained Dave Marsh, vice president of research and development for Rand McNally.

“Consumers have come to expect turn-by-turn voice guidance on GPS and in-car units, and we’ve brought that feature uniquely to the outdoor market with guidance on trails as well as roads.”

“Other industry firsts include Loop Me, a feature that creates a looped trail with the same starting and ending point, based on the user’s preferred time or distance for the hike or ride, and TrackNav, which creates navigable routes from ‘breadcrumb’ trails,” Marsh explained.

Other key features of the Foris device include:

  • Multiple U.S. map databases on device, including Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, U.S National Park Service trails, National Forestry hiking trails and multi-purpose trails, U.S. National Wildlife Refuge trails, and the national hydrographic dataset, among others (the trail maps are pre-loaded as vector trails, rather than raster images, allowing for navigation and routing vs. just viewing)
  • Millions of points of interest relevant to the outdoor market, such as trailheads, high points, bike shops, recreation areas, and campgrounds
  • Spoken and visual turn-by-turn directions, even on trails
  • Route compare feature that compares three alternative routes, along with their elevation profiles
  • Paperless geocaching through direct integration with geocaching.com; all descriptions, hints, logs, difficulty and terrain level on device
  • Storage capacity for a category-leading 7,000 waypoints
  • Barometric altimeter that shows accurate elevation levels on the map, or along current trail as well as how far to the top of a mountain or other location
  • Trailhead companion software for desktop computers allows geocaches, hikes, and rides to be stored, viewed, and transferred to and from the Foris
  • Glove friendly 3-inch touch screen (240 x 400 pixels) is sensitive enough to be used while wearing biking gloves
  • The box includes bike mount, batteries, an anti-glare screen protector, 8 GB internal memory

The Foris 850 has a suggested retail price of $399.99 and is anticipated to be the first in a line of outdoor market products from Rand McNally.

The Foris 850 will be available exclusively at amazon.com beginning June 7 and at other retailers as of June 21.

Good-Sam-logo-New“Today’s consumer has made it clear they want to increase their ease of learning about and navigating to the places they want to visit and to the areas where they participate in the activities they love ” noted Marcus Lemonis, Chairman and CEO of Good Sam in a news release.

Rand McNally Introduces RV Navigation App for iPad

Nearly two years after introducing the first GPS designed specifically for RVers, Rand McNally launched the first RV GPS app for the iPad.

-00rvgps_app_app_icon_smThe RV GPS was shown for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rand McNally’s RV GPS for iPad is the first iOS application offered that is specifically designed for RV navigation. The new application, available on the App Store(sm), provides RV class-specific routing (and with a quick toggle, over to car routing) based on Rand McNally’s proprietary road data and navigation, plus thousands of RV parks and campgrounds, RV-friendly locations, RVer tools, and pre-planned trips.

The app also includes dynamic weather, a map overlay feature that helps drivers anticipate conditions such as high wind and precipitation along the route.

Also included is a bonus feature of the app: An e-book version of America’s #1 Road Atlas.

-000rvgps_app_2_lg“About 20% of RVers have an iPad, and many of them take it on the road,” said Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally.

“Our new app lets those travelers access the same premier RV routing, navigation, and content available on our RVND GPS devices, and load it on their tablet.”

The Rand McNally RV GPS is an on-board app that provides safe and easy routing customized for an RV or car. Unlike off-board navigation, the maps load on an iPad, providing access everywhere — even in remote areas where a cellular or Wi-Fi connection is not available. For real time navigation as the vehicle progresses, a GPS signal is required.

The RV GPS app includes:

  • Safe and easy routing for 11 types of RV in the U.S. and Canada; also includes car mode for cars towed to the destination and used for excursions, or for everyday use
  • Routing based on legal and physical restrictions, such as height, width, weight limits, and propane restrictions, and favors right- or left-hand turns depending on RV class
  • Rand McNally proprietary RV-specific road attributes and Rand McNally exclusive highway construction project information
  • Warnings for speed limit changes, sharp curves, dirt roads, and other potential hazards
  • General and RV-specific points of interest including thousands of RV parks and campgrounds listed by category, RV parking, rest stops, exits, and other locations
  • Rand McNally Editor’s Picks, including Best of the Roadadventures, trips, and getaways
  • Real-time weather information including current and forecasted information for current location, destination, and anywhere along the route

Choose from 10 different map overlays to display important information for RVers, such as wind speed, current and forecasted precipitation, and weather-based traffic impact.

-00rvgps_app_4_lgRV Tools such as RV checklists prepare the user for trip departure, campsite setup, and more. Trails record a “bread crumb” path from the campsite, or a favorite shortcut and Quick Planner calculates time, distance, and cost for trips between major cities.

Fuel logs track fuel purchases, including where purchased, gallons, and total cost; and tools are available to record vehicle maintenance.

Rand McNally also sells an in-vehicle mount for an iPad and an external GPS accessory online at the Rand McNally store.

Rand McNally Introduces new RV GPS

Skokie, Illinois-based Rand McNally introduced the RVND 7720, a new seven-inch RV GPS device with Wi-Fi connectivity allowing for real-time weather information and display, and new hardware with rugged casing, video input, and a brighter screen.

Rand McNally RVND 7720 GPS device with Wi-Fi connectivity

The new device—now available in stores, online retailers, and RV dealers and distributors—joins Rand McNally’s line of RVND GPS devices for RVers.

Rand McNally pioneered RV-specific navigation by launching the first GPS device designed specifically for RVers and campers, according to a Rand McNally news release.

RV-specific navigation is necessary to route large vehicles and towables around road restrictions, low bridges, and other physical hazards. However, like all Rand McNally RV GPS devices, the RVND 7720 can be used as a car GPS as well—merely by changing a simple setting.

One of the new features of the RVND 7720 is Wi-Fi connectivity, which enables the transmission and display of weather as well as other real-time information. With updated weather information, RVers will be able to anticipate delays and make plans by viewing current and predicted conditions displayed on the map and along the route.

Besides weather, other RV-specific connected services will be coming soon and will be available for this device.

The RVND 7720 has an all-new hardware platform, featuring a new rugged design with
ridged casing for added protection, a brighter screen that adjusts for low and strong light, and video input compatible with a range of back-up and rear-view cameras.

The base maps and overlaying content, such as campgrounds, parks, RV service, and other RV points of interest, also have been updated for the RVND 7720.

The new device ships with Lifetime Maps (see link below) so owners will be able to update their devices at no additional cost.

The RVND 7720 GPS includes the following additional new features:

  • Fully updated road data, including RV-specific information such as speed limits, legal, and physical restrictions, and all Rand McNally proprietary RV data
  • Fully updated points of interest necessary for safe and convenient routing, including travel centers and RV parking information at rest stops, exits, and other locations
  • Fuel logs, which are accessible from the Virtual Dashboard or via RV Tools; the feature enables drivers to record fuel purchases for a trip
  • Additional routing options such as “Avoid State or Province” and “Avoid Smaller Roads”
  • Address book icon enhancement, which enables unique icons to be created by group and shown on the map for imported locations; address book items can be sorted by name, distance from current location, or date added
  • Text-to-speech alert details for user-imported custom points of interest, such as red light cameras, to reduce driver distraction

The new RVND 7720 has all of the features and functionality drivers have come to expect from Rand McNally, including: Virtual Dashboard; junction view with lane assist; free downloads of Rand McNally’s proprietary construction information and software updates; Exits Quick View which shows RV parking and amenities at exits; RV Tools, RV amenities and locations such as campgrounds, RV services, and dumps; Woodall’s Campground information with searchable amenities; Rand McNally exclusive pre-planned trips with photos and video; and routing for 11 types of RVs as well as for cars.
