YouFly: The Future Has Arrived

Capable of high rates of acceleration, in both cornering, banking and braking, the YouFly is designed to usher in a new generation of recreational vehicle capable of delivering fun over all types of terrain.

YouFly_LogoThe YouFly creates a space between the ground-bound hovercraft and the helicopter and can provide previously unprecedented access to rock strewn rivers, swamplands and sea and sand combinations.

A revolution in airborne mobility, the YouFly is a compact, safe, and agile airborne device capable of high altitudes.

Entecho incorporated in 2004 to design, develop, and commercialize the unique flight technology that founder and current managing director Kim Schlunke had invented. Schlunke previously spent more than 25 years within the recreation products industry as an engineer and CEO.

“It turns out that people derive most fun from acceleration on their bodies, and we came up with a value of close to one G as the sensation that people like, and so we decided we’d build this into our craft which became the YouFly.”

YouFly RVCore skills of aeronautical and mechanical engineering, flight control avionics and software, composite technology, and Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis have all been used to create successful working prototypes of Entecho’s flying craft. Entecho has received a number of grants from the Australian government and has created strong academic linkages with several universities in Australia.

Unique Technology

No single competitive technology has yet been identified that can provide the range of features that this technology can deliver in one product. Entecho technology is incorporated into a new generation recreational, flying craft: The YouFly.

The Youfly is ideally suited to those people who want the thrill of a motorized airborne sports vehicle over any surface—the YouFly takes the sport of jet-skiing and snowmobiling to a new level.

The key elements of this craft include:

  • Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capability
  • Hovering Ability – a stable airborne platform in wind gusts
  • Safe – energy-absorbing safety cell
  • Ease of Use – intuitive controls minimize operator training
  • Environmental Friendliness – electrically powered
  • Low Noise Emission and TakeOff/Landing Signature

Option to Purchase YouFly

The YouFly is available through the purchase of an option in which the buyer obtains the future right to purchase a series production YouFly and guarantees the buyer a position in the production line on a first-come/first-served basis.

The option is personal to you and non-assignable.

Each unique option number corresponds to the sequential production number of a particular YouFly, i.e. option certificate 100 will provide a right to buy the hundredth YouFly to be manufactured.

An option will provide a right to buy the YouFly S series on or before December 31, 2014 or the YouFly E series on or before December 31, 2015.

On or before these dates, the option-holder must exercise their option, sign a sales contract, and commit to the payment of a deposit (30 percent of the final purchase price) within 30 days.

YouFly_three_podsThe length of the delivery process is estimated to be between 6 and 9 months from the date on which a sales contract is signed.

The option to purchase cost is $990.

Garmin Introduces First Navigation Device for RVers

Olathe, Kansas-based Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. , a global leader in satellite navigation, introduced the Garmin RV 760LMT, its first navigator created just for the RV lifestyle.

Garmin RV 760LMT
Garmin RV 760LMT

The device features a large 7-inch screen and ability to generate routes based on the height and weight restrictions of roads and bridges. Users enter their vehicle’s height, weight, length, and width to find routes suitable for their RV, according to a news release.

The device is also preloaded with America’s RV Parks & Services Directory enabling drivers to locate RV parks, campgrounds, state and national parks, and repair shops. The directory offers 20,000 parks and campgrounds in the U.S. and Canada including national and state parks and privately owned campgrounds.

America’s RV Parks & Services Directory lets you search by 20 preferred amenities including pet-friendly, on-site laundry, Internet access, and electric hookups.

The directory also includes more than 14,000 RV-specific service locations, including towing, tire shops, truck stops, and repairs.

Plan your RV trip with BaseCamp desktop software. You can create routes along specific roads and search for points of interest, including local attractions, restaurants, and fuel stops. Then, upload your pre-planned trip to your RV 760LMT and follow along for a stress-free ride.

Garmin Adventures, powered by BaseCamp, is a free, interactive way to record and share your trips. With Garmin Adventures, you can combine routes, waypoints, geotagged photos, YouTube videos and more into an adventure that you share online. Garmin Adventures also allows you to rate your trips, read reviews, and download routes shared by fellow RVers.

Garmin-ad-01The device is compatible with Smartphone Link, a free mobile app that connects the PND to an iPhone or Android smartphone via Bluetooth to receive free and subscription-based live services.

Services include weather, points-of-interest (POI) ratings, fuel prices, real-time speed- and red-light-camera alerts, and photoLive Traffic Cameras, which lets users view real-time photos from traffic cameras across the U.S. to see traffic and weather conditions.

A local search feature lets consumers use their smartphone’s browser to find a point of interest, then send the POI to the PND via Bluetooth for navigation.

RV 760LMT features free maps and updates for the useful life of your device, so routes can reflect the most up-to-date maps, points of interest, and America’s RV Parks & Services directory information.

With the included combination power cable/traffic receiver, the RV 760LMT offers free traffic information for the useful life of your device. RV 760LMT can help you avoid traffic jams and find the detours you need to keep moving.

Spoken turn-by-turn direction technology called Garmin Real Directions guides drivers by recommending turns at recognizable landmarks, buildings, and traffic lights rather than simply by street name.

Voice-activated navigation enables the PND to respond to spoken commands.

Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts prepares you to drive through an exit or interchange with confidence. As you approach, an animated model uses brightly colored arrows to indicate the proper lane needed for your route; a friendly voice offers additional help.

And photoReal junction view realistically displays junctions and interchanges, including the surrounding landscape and road signs along your route.

  • The Garmin RV 760LMT and Travel Planner features:
  • Easy to read 7-inch display
  • Customized RV routing for lower 48 states and Canada
  • America’s RV Parks and Services directory
  • RV trip planning and sharing
  • Lifetime map and traffic updates
  • Wireless backup camera compatible

The RV 760LMT is the latest from Garmin’s consumer automotive segment, a leading worldwide provider of portable navigation devices for automobiles, motorcycles, and trucks. Garmin’s user-friendly PND solutions have innovative features that provide time- and fuel-saving benefits to meet the demands of everyday driving.

Rand McNally Introduces RV Navigation App for iPad

Nearly two years after introducing the first GPS designed specifically for RVers, Rand McNally launched the first RV GPS app for the iPad.

-00rvgps_app_app_icon_smThe RV GPS was shown for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rand McNally’s RV GPS for iPad is the first iOS application offered that is specifically designed for RV navigation. The new application, available on the App Store(sm), provides RV class-specific routing (and with a quick toggle, over to car routing) based on Rand McNally’s proprietary road data and navigation, plus thousands of RV parks and campgrounds, RV-friendly locations, RVer tools, and pre-planned trips.

The app also includes dynamic weather, a map overlay feature that helps drivers anticipate conditions such as high wind and precipitation along the route.

Also included is a bonus feature of the app: An e-book version of America’s #1 Road Atlas.

-000rvgps_app_2_lg“About 20% of RVers have an iPad, and many of them take it on the road,” said Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally.

“Our new app lets those travelers access the same premier RV routing, navigation, and content available on our RVND GPS devices, and load it on their tablet.”

The Rand McNally RV GPS is an on-board app that provides safe and easy routing customized for an RV or car. Unlike off-board navigation, the maps load on an iPad, providing access everywhere — even in remote areas where a cellular or Wi-Fi connection is not available. For real time navigation as the vehicle progresses, a GPS signal is required.

The RV GPS app includes:

  • Safe and easy routing for 11 types of RV in the U.S. and Canada; also includes car mode for cars towed to the destination and used for excursions, or for everyday use
  • Routing based on legal and physical restrictions, such as height, width, weight limits, and propane restrictions, and favors right- or left-hand turns depending on RV class
  • Rand McNally proprietary RV-specific road attributes and Rand McNally exclusive highway construction project information
  • Warnings for speed limit changes, sharp curves, dirt roads, and other potential hazards
  • General and RV-specific points of interest including thousands of RV parks and campgrounds listed by category, RV parking, rest stops, exits, and other locations
  • Rand McNally Editor’s Picks, including Best of the Roadadventures, trips, and getaways
  • Real-time weather information including current and forecasted information for current location, destination, and anywhere along the route

Choose from 10 different map overlays to display important information for RVers, such as wind speed, current and forecasted precipitation, and weather-based traffic impact.

-00rvgps_app_4_lgRV Tools such as RV checklists prepare the user for trip departure, campsite setup, and more. Trails record a “bread crumb” path from the campsite, or a favorite shortcut and Quick Planner calculates time, distance, and cost for trips between major cities.

Fuel logs track fuel purchases, including where purchased, gallons, and total cost; and tools are available to record vehicle maintenance.

Rand McNally also sells an in-vehicle mount for an iPad and an external GPS accessory online at the Rand McNally store.

Rand McNally Introduces new RV GPS

Skokie, Illinois-based Rand McNally introduced the RVND 7720, a new seven-inch RV GPS device with Wi-Fi connectivity allowing for real-time weather information and display, and new hardware with rugged casing, video input, and a brighter screen.

Rand McNally RVND 7720 GPS device with Wi-Fi connectivity

The new device—now available in stores, online retailers, and RV dealers and distributors—joins Rand McNally’s line of RVND GPS devices for RVers.

Rand McNally pioneered RV-specific navigation by launching the first GPS device designed specifically for RVers and campers, according to a Rand McNally news release.

RV-specific navigation is necessary to route large vehicles and towables around road restrictions, low bridges, and other physical hazards. However, like all Rand McNally RV GPS devices, the RVND 7720 can be used as a car GPS as well—merely by changing a simple setting.

One of the new features of the RVND 7720 is Wi-Fi connectivity, which enables the transmission and display of weather as well as other real-time information. With updated weather information, RVers will be able to anticipate delays and make plans by viewing current and predicted conditions displayed on the map and along the route.

Besides weather, other RV-specific connected services will be coming soon and will be available for this device.

The RVND 7720 has an all-new hardware platform, featuring a new rugged design with
ridged casing for added protection, a brighter screen that adjusts for low and strong light, and video input compatible with a range of back-up and rear-view cameras.

Rand McNally RVND 7720 GPS device with Wi-Fi connectivity

The base maps and overlaying content, such as campgrounds, parks, RV service, and other RV points of interest, also have been updated for the RVND 7720.

The new device ships with Lifetime Maps (see link below) so owners will be able to update their devices at no additional cost.

The RVND 7720 GPS includes the following additional new features:

  • Fully updated road data, including RV-specific information such as speed limits, legal, and physical restrictions, and all Rand McNally proprietary RV data
  • Fully updated points of interest necessary for safe and convenient routing, including travel centers and RV parking information at rest stops, exits, and other locations
  • Fuel logs, which are accessible from the Virtual Dashboard or via RV Tools; the feature enables drivers to record fuel purchases for a trip
  • Additional routing options such as “Avoid State or Province” and “Avoid Smaller Roads”
  • Address book icon enhancement, which enables unique icons to be created by group and shown on the map for imported locations; address book items can be sorted by name, distance from current location, or date added
  • Text-to-speech alert details for user-imported custom points of interest, such as red light cameras, to reduce driver distraction
Rand McNally RVND 7720 GPS device with Wi-Fi connectivity

The new RVND 7720 has all of the features and functionality drivers have come to expect from Rand McNally, including: Virtual Dashboard; junction view with lane assist; free downloads of Rand McNally’s proprietary construction information and software updates; Exits Quick View which shows RV parking and amenities at exits; RV Tools, RV amenities and locations such as campgrounds, RV services, and dumps; Woodall’s Campground information with searchable amenities; Rand McNally exclusive pre-planned trips with photos and video; and routing for 11 types of RVs as well as for cars.

Rand McNally Release RV Dealer & Service Locator App for RVers

Rand McNally and the National RV Dealers Association (RVDA) announces the release of the “RVDA Dealer Locator” app, providing RVers a simple way to find RV dealers and service providers across a variety of platforms.

The information, available for Android and iOS platforms, also is available via Rand McNally’s online maps and directions, as well as on board Rand McNally’s RVND GPS, the first GPS designed specifically for RVers, according to a news release.

The app, powered by Rand McNally’s Best of the Road online platform, enables RVers to quickly access a listing of nearby RVDA member dealers across the U.S. and Canada. Each listing includes critical information such as location, contact information, and RVDA service certifications.

In the future, the app also will provide up-to-the-minute deals and specials available at dealer and service locations.

The information will be available on Rand McNally’s RVND GPS units shipping next month and as a download for current owners of the product.

RVDA member dealers will be able to easily update their entries via a password-protected online administrative tool specifically designed for the program. Updates flow on a regular basis to all products and applications.

“This app will be extremely beneficial to our members and allow RVers to quickly find a quality dealership and service provider at the touch of their fingertips on their smart phone, Rand McNally RV GPS device, or online,” stated RVDA Chairman of the Board Andy Heck of Alpin Haus, in Amsterdam, New York.

Rand McNally RVND-7720

“Our members will find it easy to update information about their dealerships by using a new password-protected online portal.”

In addition, RVDA dealer information will be integrated into Rand McNally’s Best of the Road “Best of RVing” microsite, and into maps and directions on randmcnally.com.

Best of RVing launched in May, provides content designed to engage and inspire RVers, offering a variety of information for the experienced and novice RVers.

“Now RVers will have quick access to RVDA members’ top-tier service locations whether they are planning their trip or on the road in an emergency situation,” said Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally.

“Our Rand McNally RV GPS users as well as RVers using the mobile app or online maps will be able to access dealer data easily.”

The new app was showcased last week at RVDA’s Convention/Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 1-4, 2012.

High Number of RV Buyers Rely on the Internet

An RV dealer or manufacturer without a strong presence on the Internet is probably jeopardizing sales according to a June survey by RVtravel.com.

Of the nearly 1,400 RVers who responded, approximately 68 percent said that researching an RV and finding it on the Internet was important or very important in their buying process. Only 21 percent reported they did not use the Internet at all when purchasing their current recreational vehicle.

“Our readership is an Internet savvy group,” said RVtravel.com editor Chuck Woodbury in a news release.

“So it’s no surprise they would be inclined to use the Web to research a purchase more than others. Still, the fact that nearly 70 percent of them relied on the web to at least some degree is highly significant. I’m sure the percentage will grow in the years ahead. Any RV dealer or manufacturer who does not have a strong web presence is probably losing sales.”

RVtravel.com has published a weekly survey of its more than 240,000 monthly readers for nine years. Reading the questions and responses presents a treasure trove of marketing insights into RVer behavior and buying habits.

Responses from past survey results include the following:

Compared to three years ago, how much of your use of the internet is on a mobile device rather than a computer?

With 1,173 responses recorded, 20.38% spend much more time using a mobile device, 19.86% use a mobile device more, 40.07% use a mobile device about the same as three years ago, and 19.69% use a mobile device less. Several respondents commented that they do not have a mobile device.

When planning where to camp, how often do you rely on a printed directory over digital media (GPS, Internet, Smart Phone, etc.)?

With 1,888 responses recorded, 18.70% rely all or mostly on a printed directory, 19.65% rely mostly on a printed directory but also digital media, 17.69% rely on both equally, 19.49% rely mostly on digital media but also a printed directory, 23.15% rely mostly or always on digital media; 1.32% responded other. Selected comments follow:

  • I just drive and follow the signs. We boondock a lot. I followed rules for too many years, now I just follow my nose.
  • I look it up in the trailer life directory then look it up on line.
  • I use all methods mentioned including a wet finger in the air. But all of my planning goes out the driver’s window when I see a interesting sign or sight, or ad flyer while filling up at stops.

Complete survey results can be viewed at rvtravel.com.

More Campers Stay Connected

Tablets, smartphones, and other devices are becoming popular at campgrounds across the U.S.

Scanning smartphones, tablets, and laptops is as much a part of vacations as slathering on sunscreen, according to a Michigan State University study.

The results, which will appear in the forthcoming issue of Annals of Tourism Research, show that easy online access and ubiquitous personal devices have made the digital divide disappear, even for folks on holiday, according to a news release.

“Not that long ago, travelers would need to find a payphone or send postcards to brag about their vacations. Now they just log on and send photos and text,” said Christine Vogt, MSU professor of community agriculture, recreation and resource studies, who co-authored the study with Kelly MacKay of Ryerson University (Canada).

“Our results show clearly how the changing nature of IT behavior in everyday life is spilling over into our vacations.”

The study showed that people using smart phones have tripled.

The study also revealed that wireless use was higher on vacation (40 percent) than at home (25 percent).

Also telling, were figures that show that people used the Web more to plan vacations (80 percent) than for work (70 percent).

“Travelers are using their laptops and phones more often, and not just to plan vacations,” Vogt said.

“Since Wi-Fi is available at most destinations, tourists are checking local weather forecasts, transportation schedules, restaurant recommendations, fishing reports, safe bicycling routes, and much more.”

Pulling out computers, iPads, and smartphones at home and work is addictive. It looks like the habit doesn’t take a vacation, either, she added.

Future research will give the tourism industry insight on the best ways to serve vacationers’ online needs.

“We hope to conduct more research across the various stages of vacations,” Vogt said.

“This will help vacation service providers better understand what information travelers are looking for during trip planning and how it differs from the details they’re searching for after arrival.”

The study was funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Vogt’s research is supported in part by MSU AgBioResearch.

Rand McNally Offers New Destination for RVers

Rand McNally has expanded its award-winning travel community Best of the Road with a new microsite dedicated to RVers.

The Best of RVing site kicks off with a prize-a-day giveaway featuring items such as Rand McNally RV GPS devices, e-reader tablets, and campground memberships.  In collaboration with the Good Sam family of RV clubs, the site also features an RV Stories contest in which RVers can win up to $5,000.

“Following the success of the Best of the Road online community of road travelers, it was logical to build a special section just for RVers,” said Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally.

“Rand McNally has a long-standing relationship with RVers, who use our TripMaker RVND RV GPS as well as the Rand McNally Road Atlas, to explore the country. The Best of RVing site extends that experience, providing an outlet for RVers to connect, share their stories, learn about the lifestyle, and get practical tips from experts and partners.”

Launched a year ago, bestoftheroad.com is a community of road travelers who review the best stops on America’s highways and byways—including small towns and the points of interest between them. Every year votes are collected for the best small towns, which are then visited by amateur travelers in a Best of the Road Rally.

Best of RVing kicks off with a prize-a-day giveaway for all site registrants until August 31, 2012.

Prizes include Rand McNally’s TripMaker RVND GPS devices for RVers; NOOK Tablets from Barnes & Noble; and from Thousand Trails, Annual Camping Passes to their premier campground network. RVers simply register on bestoftheroad.com/rv and automatically they are entered to win.

In addition to the daily giveaway, the site also features an RV Stories contest, sponsored by Good Sam.

Contest entrants submit their best tales and videos in one of six categories: Oops! Bloopers & Video outtakes; Pay it Forward; Pet Stories; Outdoor Epiphanies; Camping with Kids; and Head-Turning RV Mods & Upgrades.

The RV community is invited to vote on the stories. Monthly prizes—such as $500 gift certificates to Camping World Supercenters, DISH Tailgater portable HDTV systems, Good Sam Club, and Good Sam Roadside Assistance memberships—will be awarded.

At the end of the summer, for each of the six categories, Rand McNally and Good Sam will name Grand Prize winners. The Grand Prize winners will receive $5,000 each, provided by Nokia’s Location and Commerce business, which includes NAVTEQ Maps and Traffic, the leading data enabling solutions for fleet logistics, geospatial analysis, and asset management.

Entegra Offers Mobileye Collision Avoidance System

Entegra Coach plans to offer the Mobileye Collision Avoidance C2-270 System in 2013 motor coach models.

Mobileye Collision Avoidance system

The Mobileye C2-270 system, designed to prevent collisions, includes a smart camera located on the front windshield inside the vehicle. It utilizes Mobileye’s vehicle, lane, and pedestrian detection technologies to measure the distance to vehicles, lane markings, and pedestrians, providing the driver with life-saving alerts, according to a recent news release.

The system calculates the “time to collision” based on the distance and the relative speed between the two vehicles. Studies showed that 1.5 seconds of early warning can prevent almost 90% of all rear-end collisions. The forward collision warning in the Mobileye C2-270 alerts the driver up to 2.7 seconds before a collision allowing enough time to react.

Mobileye is a leader in collision avoidance technology.

The lane departure warning alerts the driver with visual and audio warnings when deviating unintentionally from the driving lane, a situation that may end in a run-off-road crash or rollover. The Mobileye C2-270 measures the distance from the vehicle’s wheels to the lane markings on both sides and issues a directional alert. Studies conducted on fleet vehicles have shown a 65% decrease in all lane-departure related crashes using the lane departure warning.

Features of the Mobileye C2-270 include:

  • Daylight pedestrian collision warning, including bicycle detection
  • Forward collision warning, both in highway and urban areas, including motorcycle detection
  • Lane departure warning
  • Headway monitoring and warning
  • Intelligent high-beam control

Mobileye C2-270 benefits include:

  • Prevents or mitigates collisions
  • Saves lives and prevents injuries
  • Reduces collision related costs
  • Improves driving habits

System components include:

  • A windshield-mounted vision sensor unit with a compact High Dynamic Range CMOS (HDRC) camera and Mobileye’s SeeQ2 image processing board
  • High-quality audio alert buzzer
  • User-friendly, high visibility Eye Watch Display and control unit, for visual directional warnings and numerical headway measurement display, with customizing options
  • The Mobileye C2-270 fits all types of passenger cars, trucks, buses, recreational vehicles, and fleet trucks.
