Back To The 60’s With Reimagined Retro RV

With a nod to the past, Winnebago’s Brave reflects the retro quality of its 1960’s predecessor, while offering today’s best innovations

In the late ’60s and ’70s, there was no mistaking a Winnebago motorhome. The bold Flying W and iconic “eyebrow” designs were cutting paths to fun and adventure from coast to coast. It was the coach that made America fall in love with motorhomes.

Though the days of Flower Power have long passed, Winnebago decided to revive its classic 1960’s RV with features that incorporate the technologies of today. Perhaps the peace sign is now a thumbs-up as Winnebago has joined other companies that have proven that retro can still turn heads and open pocketbooks.

From Chuck Taylor shoes to Volkswagen’s famous Beetle, Winnebago is capturing a new market by offering the timeless appeal of the past, coupled with the newest features of the present.

With retro offerings trending among younger buyers, Winnebago research indicated that their original 1960’s RV could still captivate customers in the right target markets, according to a company news release.

“The Brave is a testament to both our rich history and bright future in the motorhome lifestyle. More importantly, our sales numbers are proving that retro is still cool,” stated Randy Potts, CEO of Winnebago Industries.

“The Winnebago has been re-imagined. This is the iconic Winnebago mom and dad had, modernized. The features truly speak for themselves.”

The new Brave breathes new life into the celebrated design, giving drivers the opportunity to relive childhood memories.

Beyond its stylish appearance, the Winnebago Brave is loaded with versatile floor plans—ideal for weekend getaways or extended trips.

The Brave features a state-of-the-art sliding dash rearview monitor with Rand McNally RV GPS and a powered patio awning as well as Winnebago’s StudioLoft bedding system for added sleeping space.

Winnebago’s classic eyebrow design and “Flying W” sidewall logo earned the top award of the Recreation Vehicle Industry’s 52nd Annual Trade Show.

The Winnebago Brave and its sister, the Itasca Tribute, were given the prestigious title of “RV of the Year” by RV Business Magazine.

Winnebago offers a true sense of discovery and rediscovery with multigenerational appeal.

The Growing Compact Motorhome Market

Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago Industries, Inc. is forging a distinct new motorhome market for compact, fuel efficient motorhomes.

With market share of 43.2 percent in calendar 2014 in this segment, Winnebago has essentially created a new market for customers interested in compact, fuel efficient motorhomes.

“We define a compact motorhome as any Class A, B, or C product with a narrow-width body (90 inches) and is under 26 feet in length,” said Russ Garfin, Winnebago Product Manager, in a company news release.

“Essentially that comes down to new product offerings in which Winnebago has taken the lead. New chassis selections in the past decade, such as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ram ProMaster, have provided Winnebago the opportunity to create innovative new products that meet the needs of a growing customer base.”

“The compact motorhome category has grown an amazing 83.3 percent since 2006, while the motorhome industry as a whole has declined by 32.1 percent.” Garfin added.

“Our new products have really sparked a growing trend of buyers who want to enjoy the RV lifestyle, but also want an easy-to-drive, fuel-efficient and highly maneuverable full-featured motorhome.”

Since 2006, 27,939 have been retailed in the compact motorhome category, 13,750 (49.2 percent) of which were Winnebago products.

Winnebago products that are included in the compact motorhome category include the Class A Via and Reyo, Class C View, Navion, Trend and Viva, and the Class B Winnebago Touring Coach line of Era and Travato.

The Class A Winnebago Via and Itasca Reyo are built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis. Three floor plans offer a whole host of arrangements so you can customize your interior to suit your needs.

Also built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, the Class C Winnebago View and Itasca Navion offer four attractive floor plans with room for expanded dining and relaxation.

Winnebago Brave & Tribute Awarded RV of the Year

Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago Industries new retro-styled Brave and Tribute have been awarded RV Business magazine’s 2015 RV of the Year.

Winnebago Brave & Tribute Awarded RV of the Year
Winnebago Brave & Tribute Awarded RV of the Year

“I can’t think of a higher compliment than receiving this prestigious award from RV Business magazine,” said Winnebago’s Class A Gas Product Manager John Millis, in a company news release.

“We worked extremely hard as a team at Winnebago to ensure that we were both paying tribute to the fabulous design of our original motorhomes, as well as putting a lot of thought into making the Brave and Tribute a modern motorhome. That meant not only including all the features you would expect in today’s motorhomes, but also thinking outside the box to deliver features that were totally unique to the marketplace, such as the sofa in the 26A model that converts to not only a bed, but also a table, or it can fold completely out of the way against the wall for additional storage space.”

“We felt it was important to recognize authentically original thinking on this kind of a scale because Winnebago has boldly stepped into a place in terms of marketing and product design that no motorhome manufacturer has gone before,” said RVBusiness Editor Bruce Hampson. “The Brave/Tribute is a highly appealing and marketable new coach that will likely gain major traction among North American consumers before all is said and done.”

Winnebago Brave & Tribute Awarded RV of the Year

The RVBusiness article that announced the award quotes Bob Livingston, senior vice president and group publisher of Good Sam Enterprises, who recently tested a prototype 26-footer for MotorHome magazine.

“Livingston found that people off the street were following him into gas stations to get a better look at what they thought was a renovated vintage 1967 Winnebago Brave. In fact, Livingston says he never had more fun testing a unit than he did with that prototype Brave, which is only one of several reasons why RVBusiness has named this truly novel retro Winnebago Brave/Tribute motorhome RVBusiness’ “RV of the Year.”

The price-sensitive coach, retailing for $96,599 to $121,379, is available in three 26 to 31-foot floor plans on a 362-hp, V-10-powered Ford chassis.

Winnebago Brave

Itasca Tribute

The Itasca Tribute took its trailblazing heritage with a fresh take on this iconic design. It is a look that conjures up the youthful enthusiasm you had when you first experienced the motorhome lifestyle, and it is an opportunity to share the lifestyle with a family of your own.

Nostalgia & Retro Winnebago Brave

When news from the world of recreational vehicles hits, it is usually about some incredible custom job with a gold-trimmed hot tub, on-board parking for matching Harleys, and a multi-million-dollar price tag.

Nostalgia & Retro Winnebago Brave
Nostalgia & Retro Winnebago Brave

The recent news out of Forest City, Iowa, was heartwarming by comparison.

In a recent post on Vogel Talks RVing, I detailed the re-launch of the coach that made America fall in love with motorhomes, the Winnebago Brave, one of its most popular models from the 1970s. Sister brand Itasca is releasing the similarly styled Tribute model.

Just about everyone recognizes the shape of that classic Winnebago motorhome, from the iconic “eyebrows” over the windshield to the distinctive styling inside and out.

“This is the most exciting product launch I’ve ever been involved with,” says Randy Potts, Winnebago’s chairman and chief executive.

“The new Brave and Tribute are going to take the market by storm. The retro, yet modern image they project is fun, while they offer great new features that are sure to capture the eye of new buyers.”

“With ‘Throwback Thursdays’ all the rage, this is a perfect time to launch the new Brave and Tribute, added Potts.”

His timing is right on, according to a BBC report.

2015 Winnebago Brave 31C
2015 Winnebago Brave 31C

Hollywood is lately into something called “nostalgia mining”. When Michael Bay ruins your childhood memories with his Transformers movies, he is simultaneously tugging at your wallet and your heartstrings.

The automotive world, at least, has a better record with nostalgia. Witness such yesteryear-inspired success stories as Volkswagen’s New Beetle, BMW’s Mini Cooper, and Morgan Motor Company’s reborn 3 Wheeler. And, of course, Ford’s Mustang has thrived since the debut of the 2005 model, the shape of which unsubtly recalled the carmaker’s beloved mid-‘60s ’Stangs.

That approach is working for Winnebago. The company defined the box-on-wheels motorhome in 1966, with a 19-foot model called the F-19.

As modern design goes, the Brave is anti-design: still a rolling rectangle with the same Flying W graphic running down the side. That large brow is back above a flat front windshield—though at twice the height of the ‘60s version, the front glass gives the reissue an almost cartoonish look, as if it were being recalled through childhood’s hazy lens.

Inside, there is plenty of retro styling in the cabinets and upholstery, though the amenities are anything but old. A movable dashboard console houses a rearview monitor, a navigation system and a radio with Bluetooth to stream music from any of the dozens of devices a road warrior might haul. Power-deployable bunks drop from the ceiling, the awning and the hydraulic jacks are automatic, and a half-century of refinements save space and make life on the road a little more livable.

The updated version of the Brave and its Tribute cousin ride atop Ford’s F53 motorhome chassis, which is fitted with a 362-horsepower, 6.8-litre V10 engine. Available in 26-foot, 27-foot, and 31-foot lengths, the Brave starts at $96,424, with a well-equipped 31-footer commanding upwards of $120,000 (a bargain compared with Winnebago’s largest diesel pushers, whose prices flirt with $500,000.

“This is a product that makes people happy because of the memories,” says Potts.

And if the collective appetite for all things old holds, he’ll be right on the money.

Iowa’s star vehicle

Winnebago RVs have made some memorable movie and TV appearances over the years.

The Walking Dead (2010): This series’ band of survivors takes off in a 1977 Chieftain to escape the zombie horde.

About Schmidt (2002): A restless recent retiree (Jack Nicholson) saddles up a 2001 Adventurer and hits the road.

Spaceballs (1987): Mel Brooks’ riff on Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon is a flying 1986 Chieftain, piloted by Lone Starr and Barf (Bill Pullman and John Candy).

Lost in America (1985): A thirty-something husband and wife (Albert Brooks and Julie Hagerty) quit their jobs and hit the road in a 1984 Chieftain.

Winnebago Man (2009): This documentary tells the strange tale of Jack Rebney, whose expletive-filled Winnebago sales video outtakes from the 1980s made him a unwitting celebrity in the Internet age.

Winnebago Offers FREE Factory Tours

Annually more than 10,000 visitors come to Forest City, Iowa, to get the inside story of one of America’s most iconic brands—Winnebago.

You are invited to see for yourself why Winnebago is the best-selling brand and most recognized name in RVing with a free factory tour.

Founded in 1958, Winnebago became a household word when the company became the first recreation vehicle manufacturer to build motorhomes in an automotive-style assembly line system. Winnebago builds its Winnebago, Itasca, and Winnebago Touring Coach motorhome brands in one of the most technologically advanced RV manufacturing facilities in existence today.

“If you haven’t been on our tours—you are missing out,” said Winnebago Chairman, CEO and President Randy Potts.

“The tour not only shows you how our motorhomes are built from start to finish, but also the technology and innovative designs that set our motorhomes apart from the rest.”

The tour starts at the Winnebago Visitors’ Center with a 20-minute video that offers a preview of the manufacturing process. After the video, the tour bus, manufactured by Winnebago Industries, departs for a drive-through tour of the grounds.

Tour goers are also able to do walk-in tours of three buildings: the Chassis Weld facility, where the raw chassis is prepared to become a home on wheels with the front cab and basement storage added; the Stitchcraft facility that builds quality chairs, window valances, sofas and other innovative furniture pieces that are only found in our motorhomes; and our main production area named Big Bertha.

Equivalent in size to eight football fields, Big Bertha features three production lines. Visitors will see the magnitude of this building thanks to mezzanines that provide a bird’s eye view.

Before or after the tour, visitors can also visit the Winnebago Museum which is located in the upper level of the Visitors’ Center. The museum chronicles the Company’s 56-year history, as well as the design and construction of the Company’s motorhomes.

During the spring and summer months, the Visitors’ Center also features some of the latest models of the company’s Winnebago, Itasca, and Winnebago Touring Coach motorhomes, as well as Winnebago Towables, right off the assembly lines.

Visitors can also see one of the first motorhomes built by Winnebago Industries, the classic 1967 Winnebago D22, as well as a 1959 trailer. The Visitors’ Center is also home to WIT Club, the company’s product owners club and Winnebago Outdoor Store, which offers a variety of Winnebago branded apparel, gifts, and wearables.

Tours of Winnebago are free, and all ages are welcome. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The Visitors’ Center is accessible to those with disabilities; however the factory tour does include three staircases.

Tours, which last approximately two hours, are offered twice daily at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday from April through October, and at 1:00 p.m. in November. If your group is larger than six, reservations are recommended.
