Heartland RV Introduces Torque Extreme Lite Travel Trailer Series

Building on strong sales and growing market share in the fifth-wheel toy hauler segment, Elkhart, Indiana-based Heartland Recreational Vehicles LLC has broadened its product offerings with the introduction of the Torque Extreme Lite travel trailer series targeting a rapidly growing 1/2-ton pickup market.

“Heartland has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years in the fifth-wheel toy hauler segment,” stated General Manager A.J. Jones, in a company news release.

“However, because of production limitations in the past, we weren’t able to expand into other areas of the market, which continues to branch into new categories.”

As part of a companywide expansion initiative, Heartland moved its toy hauler operations into a dedicated facility, effectively doubling production capacity while significantly reducing turnaround times.

“Heartland has made a huge commitment to toy haulers, allowing us to compete in all-new price points and weights,” Jones stated.

Jones noted that Heartland owns a 22 percent market share in fifth-wheel toy haulers and a nearly 30 percent share of all triple-axle fifth-wheel toy haulers sold.

Combining lightweight construction with aggressive pricing, the Torque offers Heartland’s dealer partners a full-featured toy hauler that addresses the towing needs of 1/2-ton pickup owners.

“The key to the Torque Extreme Lite is to keep the same high-end look and features that our fifth-wheel toy haulers provide, but doing it on a 1/2-ton towable platform,” noted Coley Brady, vice president of sales and marketing.

“Our dealers have been begging for an affordable, 1/2-ton towable, and A.J. and his team delivered with the Torque Extreme Lite.”

Available in six floor plans, ranging in length from 31- to 38 1/2 feet, the new Torque Lite series features 102-inch wide-body construction, all-aluminum framing and Equa-flex suspension with gas shocks to ensure a stable, comfortable ride.

The onboard garage is equipped with 5,000-pound tie-downs, Happy-Jac powered bunks beds and can accommodate the largest side-by-sides. MSRP pricing starts at $39,450.

“The introduction of the Torque travel trailer extends Heartland’s laser focus on the toy hauler segment,” said Heartland President Chris Hermon.

“By entering into the 1/2-ton pickup market, we have positioned Heartland to capture even more market share in what we see as a segment that continues to evolve and gain traction. As always we listened to our dealers, bringing to market a product that not only meets a growing demand but also stands out on the sales lot with features traditionally not offered by the competition at this price point.”

Heartland Introduces Gateway Luxury Fifth Wheel With Side Patio

Based on one of its most popular floor plans, Heartland Recreational Vehicles is seeing strong consumer response for its newly introduced Gateway 3750PT luxury fifth-wheel, sporting four slide rooms, two true queen-size beds, and a 60-square-foot side patio.

The latest addition to the Gateway line is breaking new ground in the full-profile fifth-wheel marketplace, according to a company news release.

“The 3750PT is one of just a few units to offer a side patio in a non-toy hauler floor plan,” General Manager Paul Craven said.

“It’s also the only fifth-wheel floor plan that offers two true queen beds—one in the front master bedroom and the other in a rear of the RV.

“We were able to accommodate a 60-inch-by-80-inch queen in the second bedroom by engineering a tilt mechanism that reduces the bed size when the two opposing slides are retracted,” added Craven.

“With the slide outs open, the room is approximately 13 feet wide.”

Craven noted that the Gateway 3750PT was adapted from Heartland’s hot-selling 3650 model, allowing for a quick rollout in time for the heart of the early show season.

“The insight we gained from engineering and building world class toy haulers allowed us to adapt the side patio into a full-profile fifth-wheel,” he said.

Targeting growing families with two available bunkhouse slide rooms, the 41-foot fifth-wheel creates a spacious, homelike environment that extends to the outdoors with the side patio area.

“With the two bunk slides, it can sleep up to seven people,” Craven said.

“Essentially, the patio creates an additional room, letting people get off the ground and still enjoy the outdoors.”

Standard patio features include an overhead awning along with a large TV, built-in refrigerator, and safety rails. Sliding glass doors with a built-in screen lead from the patio into the 3750PT’s kitchen that is set off by solid-surface countertops and a “stone-look” base cabinet.

The living area is outfitted for entertaining with spacious seating on a couch equipped with four recliners and a chaise lounge. A 40-inch TV is located in the kitchen for central viewing.

“The 3750PT has been selling extremely well on the consumer show circuit,” said Coley Brady, vice president of sales and marketing for Heartland.

“Our dealer partners are telling us that it creates a new niche in the rapidly growing full-profile segment, adding another value piece to their lineup.”

“The Gateway line continues to excel and deliver unbeatable floor plans that resonate with buyers, said President Chris Hermon.

“It is now the market leader in its segment, which was accomplished in just 2 1/2 years. More good things are coming soon for this brand.”

Other options on the 3750PT include a six-point electric leveling system, residential refrigerator, prep for a generator, dual pane windows, and a king bed in the master suite.

Craven said that Heartland will be adding another “industry-first” floor plan in the coming months.

Heartland Expands Oakmont Fifth Wheel Line

Behind a highly successful product launch at September’s Elkhart County RV Open House backed up by strong performance at the retail level, Heartland Recreational Vehicles is expanding its Oakmont high-profile fifth-wheel line with two all-new floor plans.

Heartland Expands Oakmont Fifth Wheel Line

“Our dealer partners were really drawn to the Oakmont at the Open House and, as a result, we were able to place a lot of orders,” reported General Manager Kary Katzenberger, adding the new floor plans would debut at at the 52nd Annual National RV Trade Show, December 2-4 at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Now, we’re seeing fast turns on the sales lots, which indicates the Oakmont is resonating with consumers as a true value piece in one of the industry’s most hotly contested segments.”

“Our goal when we developed Oakmont was to offer high-end, residential styling, and amenities at an unprecedented price point. With an MSRP of around $54,000, we’re packaging in standards and options across the line that no one else in the industry is offering, including hydraulic leveling jacks and slide rooms,” Katzenberger added.

The two floor plans set to debut in Louisville extend Oakmont’s positioning as a diverse brand targeting full-timers and younger RVers with families—key demographics in the high-end fifth-wheel market. Oakmont currently comprises four floor plans with two more models planned for a February, 2015, rollout.

The 41-foot 395QB Oakmont offers a family-oriented, bunkhouse layout that includes an outside entertainment area with 32-inch TV, four large bunks with access to a 1/2 bath, and a dinette slide on the “camp” side of the coach.

“Our research showed that a popular feature with consumers is being able enjoy a view of their campsite when having a meal,” Katzenberger said.

The 345RS is designed as a couples coach, offering a comfortable, residential environment that caters to entertaining or relaxing.

The 36-footer is set off by Heartland’s proprietary “Mega Slide” in the dinette area, featuring a 7-foot-2-inch ceiling height and panoramic windows. The living area centers around a 50-inch LED TV with surrounding recliners—power theater seats are optional—that face the entertainment center for optimum viewing. A fully equipped kitchen offers a spacious work area along with ample storage.

Heartland President Chris Hermon emphasized that the Oakmont brand was the result of extensive product development, integrating input from customers and the company’s dealer body.

Heartland Introduces Landmark 365 for Baby Boomers

Nine months ago Heartland Recreational Vehicles made the decision to invest in the future of Landmark.

Landmark 365 by Heartland
Landmark 365 by Heartland

The company made it a stand-alone division and hired industry veteran Tom Montague to lead Landmark in a new direction.

Today, that investment in the future is paying off, according to a company news release.

Landmark 365 is starting to hit dealer lots all across the country. More than that, the product has been well received by dealers and Heartland has seen a tremendous increase in retail orders in a short period of time.

“They have complete confidence in me,” said Montague.

“They’ve given me the freedom and the tools to do what it takes to build an industry-leading brand. All great Landmarks have a story and LM365 is no different. While most of the industry is diversifying their offering, we are focused like a laser. We know exactly who we are and exactly what we want to accomplish.”

“LM365 is built for the Baby Boomers but we’ve broken it down even further,” said Montague, noting there are three distinct groups under the Baby Boomer umbrella.

“First, are the permanent site or extended stay Boomers who don’t travel much; second are the newly retired, on-the-go Boomers who can’t wait to see what North America has to offer; and the third and growing group is work campers, folks who are still working and choose to live in a fifth-wheel.”

landmark_logoThere are 17 million Baby Boomers scheduled to retire over the next 15 years.

“LM365 is building a product to meet the growing needs of this diverse group,” said Heartland President Chris Hermon.

“Tom’s team understands the market better than anyone in the industry.”

Heartland Introduces All-New Edge Toy Hauler

“Edge is unlike anything in the industry and is truly creating its own segment in the toy   hauler marketplace,” said General Manager A.J. Jones.

“Edge is priced well below the competition, while providing many features not found in any other toy hauler.”

Aggressively priced to compete in one of the industry’s fastest growing sectors The Edge line is currently comprised of four floor plans, one travel trailer and three fifth-wheel configurations. Jones reported that two models would be on display during the Open House.

“The Edge is an extension of Heartland’s commitment to be the market leader in terms of innovative design and staying in tune with an ever-changing demographic,” said Heartland President Chris Hermon.

“Toy haulers have evolved into the industry’s most versatile product as consumers keep discovering new uses and functions. We work hard to make sure Heartland is out front of the competition in responding to customers’ demands in this explosive growth segment.”

Recognizing an emerging trend toward enhancing the living area in toy haulers, Heartland has integrated its exclusive side patio into the onboard garage on all fifth-wheel models while adding fold-down sofas to give the area “a residential look and feel.”

For additional outdoor living area, models also include a rear patio off the garage.

Other features available on all fifth-wheels include two full bathrooms, an expansive bedroom with king-size bed, and a “Mega” walk-through master bath with sunken tub.

The living room is set off by a 50-inch TV and built-in fireplace.

Other features include six-point landing gear, 7,000-pound Dexter axles, a 23 cubic-foot refrigerator, and “unmatched” kitchen storage.

“As in all Heartland’s lines, the all-new Edge keys on those trends and features that are tripping the hot button with consumers,” Jones said.

“Along with a host of set-apart features, Edge also hits a price point that will not only provide another value piece for our dealers but also give them a step up on the competition.”

“Our toy haulers are definitely in high demand with our dealers,” said Coley Brady, vice president of sales.

“We are excited about leading this segment of the business and increasing sales.”

Hitting a price point that “establishes a new category” in the expanding fifth-wheel market, Heartland Recreational Vehicles introduces its smartly appointed, full-profile Oakmont line equipped with the company’s exclusive “Mega Slide.”

Recognizing a heightened demand in the full-profile fifth-wheel segment — driven by an affluent Baby Boomer demographic — Heartland focused on designing a residential-style environment that caters to the needs of both full-timers and RVers that travel with families, according to a company news release.

The Oakmont is initially available in four floor plans, two 41-foot bunk models, and two 35- to 38-foot couples coaches, with the MSRP starting at $53,900 well-equipped.

“Our team spent the last eight months reviewing and evaluating residential interiors,” said General Manager Kary Katzenberger, noting Heartland would grow the number of floor plans to seven or eight by next spring.

“Our goal was to bring that type of upscale look and comfort into the Oakmont, but even more importantly, at a cost that undercuts the competition. We accomplished that by designing an interior that will grab the attention of the retail customer.”

“Heartland’s marketing strategy is to always offer our dealer partners unprecedented value, said Heartland President Chris Hermon.

“With the Oakmont, we were are able to create a whole new price point in one of the industry’s fastest-selling segments while still providing the features, amenities and structural integrity that today’s consumers are demanding.”

Katzenberger reported that a key element in the Oakmont design was integrating Heartland’s Mega Slide offered in the builder’s upper-end Big Horn fifth-wheel lineup.

“It features a 7-foot-2-inch ceiling height that really opens up the coach,” he said, noting the slideroom was currently available on certain Oakmont models.

“The slide also offers large, panoramic windows that help enhance the feel of a more spacious interior without sacrificing storage.”

Other set-apart features include:

Six-point hydraulic level system.

Three to four hydraulic-powered sliderooms

7,000-pound Dexter axle and E-Z Flex suspension.

Residential-style furniture including recliners with power massagers.

Stackable washer/dryer prep.

50-inch LED TVs in main living area.

Lippert Correct Track suspension system.

Keying on another residential trend, the Oakmont also provides a spacious, fully-equipped kitchen area with residential-style refrigerator and appliances, 20–inch stove for maximum counter space, and a deep stainless steel sink and faucet.

This innovative product will also be displayed at this year’s Fifth Annual Elkhart County RV Open House, September 16-18.

With the adjoining patio situated just off the kitchen area, the 41-foot, five-slide 3900FLP features a wide sliding glass door that transitions guests and family to an area that adds over 70 square feet of living space complete with a flat-screen TV and exterior sound system.

The side patio, first engineered for Heartland’s selection of toy haulers, represents an industry first in the luxury fifth-wheel segment.

“The 3900FLP caters to the indoor/outdoor lifestyle of today’s RVers,” said General Manager Joel Eberlein.

“With the side patio, people don’t have to step down to the ground to enjoy their campsite. It offers an ideal entertainment area, allowing people to become engaged inside and outside the coach, much like a residential home.”

Eberlein reported that the side patio, built with a spring assist allowing for raising and lowering by one person, boasts a 1,500-pound capacity and aluminum side rails that are quick to set up and take down. A robust latch system coupled with heavy-duty seals on the perimeter of the patio ensure stability when the RV is in travel mode.

“Just like Heartland’s toy haulers, the 3900FLP’s side patio has undergone extensive engineering and durability testing to ensure resilience to on-the-road conditions,” Eberlein said. For added stability and handling, the 3900FLP is equipped with 7,000-pound Dexter axles with E-Z lube hubs, Dexter E-Z Flex suspension, and Lippert’s Correct Track Alignment, complemented by four shock absorbers and 2015 G-rated tires.

The fifth-wheel’s interior is set off by a homelike cooking area that includes a recessed stove and optional residential refrigerator. For accommodating guests who congregate in the kitchen, the 3900FLP offers a two-tier dinette featuring a bar-height countertop design.

Big Country logo“There has never been a kitchen designed with this kind of storage and open space,” said Eberlein.

The open concept living area, accented by opposing sliderooms, also provides an inviting gathering area with two full-size pull-out sofas and theater seating for viewing the 55-inch LED TV. Other amenities include solid-stained hardwood throughout, updated LED lighting and wall décor.

“Space, function, and smart design is what Big Country is all about,” said Heartland President Chris Hermon.

“That attention to detail enables Heartland to build fifth-wheels that don’t sacrifice the key ‘nut and bolts’ that other full-time brands give up.”

“The number of people looking to full-time in their RV is growing, and Heartland continues to be the leader in this market segment,” Hermon added.

March 2014 RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced five recall notices involving four recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers—Starcraft RV, Four Wheel & Six-Pac Campers, Heartland Recreational Vehicles, and Jayco.

Starcraft RV

Starcraft logoMiddlebury, Indiana-based Starcraft RV, Inc. (Starcraft) is recalling certain model year 2014 Launch 17FB and 17SB travel trailers manufactured May 5, 2013, through December 9, 2013, and equipped with the extreme package option.

There is incorrect tire size information printed on the federal labels. The tire information on the label states the tire size as 14C when it should be tire size 15C. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 119, “New Pneumatic Tires for Motor Vehicles with a GVWR of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) and Motorcycles.”

Installing a tire of incorrect size could result in excessive tire wear and may cause instability in towing of the travel trailer which could increase the risk of a crash.

Starcraft will notify owners, and will provide a corrected label, free of charge. The recall began on February 26, 2014. Owners may contact Starcraft RV at 1-800-945-4787.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Four Wheel & Six-Pac Campers, Inc.

Four Wheel Pop-Up Campers logoWoodland, California-based Four Wheel & Six-Pac Campers, Inc. (Four Wheel & Six-Pac) is recalling certain model year 2006-2013 truck campers manufactured January 1, 2006, through April 30, 2013, and equipped with Fastec-brand door locks. It may be possible to remove the key from the lock in a way that potentially jams the deadbolt.

If the deadbolt jams, the interior side of the door lock may also jam. A person inside the truck camper at the time will then be locked in and be unable to exit, increasing the risk of injury.

Four Wheel & Six-Pac will notify owners, and Fastec will coordinate the inspection and replacement of the cylinders, as needed, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by early April 2014. Owners may contact Four Wheel & Six-Pac at 1-530-666-1442 or Fastec at 1-800-837-2505.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Heartland Recreational Trailers, LLC

HeartlandElkhart, Indiana-based Heartland Recreational Vehicles, LLC (Heartland) is recalling certain model year 2014 Landmark Grand Canyon, Key Largo, Monterey, San Antonio, and Savannah fifth wheel travel trailers manufactured September 14, 2013, through January 17, 2014, and equipped with optional 17.5″ wheels.

The affected trailers were manufactured with incorrect information printed on the Federal Certification Label regarding the wheel specification. As such, the trailers do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 119 “New Pneumatic Tires for Vehicles Other Than Passenger Cars.”

An incorrect label may result in owners attempting to replace the tires with the wrong size or fill the tires to the wrong tire pressure, which may increase the risk of tire failure and a crash.

Heartland will notify owners, and will mail owners a corrected replacement label, free of charge. Owners may contact Heartland at 1-888-262-5992. Heartland’s number for this recall is 99-01-15.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Heartland Recreational Trailers, LLC

HeartlandElkhart, Indiana-based Heartland Recreational Trailers, LLC (Heartland) is recalling certain model year 2014 Sundance 2880RLT travel trailers manufactured November 20, 2013, through January 31, 2014.

In the affected vehicles, the Federal Certification label incorrectly states that the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is 16,500 pounds instead of the correct GVWR of 13,500 pounds. As such, the vehicle does not conform to Part 567, “Certification.”

As a result, the trailer may be loaded beyond the specified weight rating which may cause a tire or suspension failure leading to poor vehicle handling and an increased risk of a crash.

Heartland will notify owners and dealers will replace the incorrect Federal Certification label with a corrected version, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2014. Owners may contact Heartland at 1-888-262-5992. Heartland’s number for this campaign is 99-01-16.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Jayco, Inc.

Jayco Color logo birdJayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain model year 2014 Jay Flight Swift travel trailers manufactured January 10, 2014, through January 13, 2014, and equipped with the Baja Option.

The Federal Certification and Tire Labels have the tire size incorrectly listed as ST205/75R14C instead of LT235/75R15C. Thus, the vehicles do not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 120, “Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles Other Than Passenger Cars.”

If the consumer installs a tire on the trailer that is specified on the incorrect label, it may cause uneven wear on the tire and towing instability which could increase the risk of a crash.

Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will replace the incorrect Federal Certification and Tire Labels with new labels with the correct tire information as LT235/75R15C. The recall is expected to begin in March 2014. Customers may contact Jayco at 1-800-283-8267.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
