Live Off-grid In An Ecocapsule

No humpty dumpty trailer but reminiscent of the Eggcamper, the futuristic Ecocapsule is poised to take the RV industry by storm.

Live Off-grid In An Ecocapsule
Live Off-grid In An Ecocapsule

For many the appeal of an RV road trip is enhanced by getting away from it all and living off the grid for a few days. Now, one design company seems to have taken the idea and turned it on its head, with the introduction of the Ecocapsule.

Slovakian design firm, Nice Architects, has built the egg-shaped Ecocapsule to allow those who wish to live off-grid to do so in great style. Despite looking like something more akin to a dinosaur egg from the Jurassic era, the capsule’s modern design and amenities are certainly a futuristic pod option to take seriously.

Packed into a compact form, the solar-and-wind-powered Ecocapsule merges an energy efficient shape, compact volume, and off-grid capabilities with the luxuries of a warm bed, running water, and a hot meal. The completely self-sustaining design, featuring its own solar panel system and high-capacity 9,700-watt-hour battery, tripled with a 750-watt wind turbine, allows for up to a year’s worth of energy.

The spherical, egg-shaped design allows for the collection of rainwater and dew to travel through water filters and provide fresh drinking water on tap. The water filters embedded in the upper surface of the pod purify rainwater and then funnels it into a sub-floor tank.

Dubbed “the first truly independent micro-home,” the real beauty of the Ecocapsule is that it allows you to camp anywhere you wish to travel. Whether you want to set up camp at the beach, on a mountain, in a cornfield, or in the tundra, this self-sustaining pod will keep you protected from the elements in style.

Able to be towed by a standard vehicle, but light enough to be towed by an animal according to Nice Architects, the options for where to camp seem rather endless and, despite lacking in size when compared to other trailers or caravans (it’s 14 feet 7 inches long and 7 feet 10 inches wide), it’s certainly not lacking in essentials featuring two berths, a built-in kitchenette with running water, flushing toilet, hot shower, as well as comfortable bed.

The Ecocapsule hasn’t just been created for those looking for a leisurely escape though, and it has also been designed to provide shelter in disaster areas, as well as doubling as a scientific research station in regions which are more difficult to reach by way of conventional methods.

The Ecocapsule was unveiled for public viewing for the first time at the 2015 Pioneers Festival on May 28 in Vienna, and will be available for purchase later in the year.

There’s no word yet on what this high-tech and environmentally conscious mobile home will cost you yet, but just think of it this way: You’ll never have to pay another utilities bill again. And you get to live on the road — forever.

What do you think of the Ecocapsule? Is this the ultimate in campers?

Or would you think UFOs have landed with extra-terrestrial life forms as neighbors if they camped next to you?

Ecocapsule

Even though small in size, each Ecocapsule comfortably houses two adults. Its efficient spatial layout allows you to enjoy convenience of household facilities in off-grid conditions. Built-in kitchenette with running water, flushing toilet and hot shower are luxuries of a hotel room that are now also available in wilderness.

Despite its small form each Ecocapsule is fitted with all essentials necessary for a comfortable prolonged stay without a need to recharge or re-supply.

EverGreen RV Introduces New Ever-Lite Travel Trailer Floor Plan

Middlebury, Indiana-based EverGreen Recreational Vehicles’ flagship Ever-Lite travel trailer, increases floor plan choices with the newest 292FLBS.

EverGreen RV Introduces New Ever-Lite Travel Trailer Floor Plan
EverGreen RV Introduces New Ever-Lite Travel Trailer Floor Plan

As with all Ever-Lite models the 292FLBS is built with ComposiTek construction. The Ever-Lite brand remains the only composite travel trailer on the market today.

The ComposiTek construction isn’t the only feature that sets the 292FLBS apart from other travel trailers. There are plenty of standard amenities throughout and opportunities to customize that make the Ever-Lite brand a popular choice among savvy campers in search of a coach that will last a lifetime.

An entry door at the front of the trailer opens into the large living area. The 90-inch horseshoe lounge with freestanding table sits in the 42-inch deep slide opposite the entrance. An optional sofa with two end tables is available in place of the lounge. At the front of the living area is another sofa with valuable overhead storage above. This sofa can also be replaced with two optional swivel rockers. Natural light fills the room from the skylight above making the space feel even larger.

A spacious kitchen full of cabinets and a huge pantry provide plenty of food storage. The 292FLBS features a unique slide-out wardrobe/pantry that is strategically located for optimal functionality. The wardrobe slide is next to the kitchen, across from the bathroom and outside the bedroom for food, linen or clothing storage in the hallway.

“This bedroom slide model offers people more interior living space without the added length,” said Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doug Lantz.

“Our new 292FLBS is as much as 1,600 pounds lighter, and two to three feet shorter than other bedroom slide models on the market today.”

The bedroom has more than just a residential style closet with mirrored, sliding doors. Nightstands on both sides of the bed, under bed storage with gas-assisted struts, a large dresser and overhead storage provide more than enough room for camping essentials.

A generous sized bathroom also has a large amount of countertop space, uncommon in similar travel trailers. Above the curved front shower a skylight floods the room with natural light.

The Ever-Lite remains EverGreen’s innovative, composite flagship brand. The up-front investment in composite materials, and the complexity of manufacturing with composites, are just two of the reasons the EverGreen Ever-Lite remains the only composite travel trailer built to this day.

Tumbleweed: An RV Like You’ve Never Seen Before

The year was 1999 when the first Tumbleweed Tiny House was mounted on a trailer.

The openness of the Linden great room, perfect for small gatherings of family and friends, and the innovative new loft are the major features of this Tiny House RV.

The RV was named Tumbleweed because it had roots and was mobile at the same time. And in that moment, the seeds for an RV revolution were planted.

Designed to fit specifically on trailers, these bona fide mini wooden homes can hook up to your tow vehicle, or be permanently fixed on land and connected to water and electricity.

With an original focus on do-it-yourself homes, Tumbleweed issued The Small House Book, created new house designs, and offered workshops across the country.

Tumbleweed’s two-day workshops (pricing starts at $279) attracted more than 2,500 attendees a year.

The workshops revealed that not all customers want to build their own homes and would be interested in purchasing completed projects.

In response, Tumbleweed began building and delivering houses on wheels. In 2013 its mobile models gained national certification from the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) as park trailers—a move that helped overcome zoning obstacles and qualified the residences for financing.

Tumbleweed has become a lifestyle choice for a diverse set of customers, from young people with a need for an affordable first home to Baby Boomers who want to downsize to those who simply want to add space, perhaps by putting a tiny house on wheels in the backyard or at the lake.

The Out-Of-This-World Cool Cricket Trailer

Despite what Matthew McConaughey might have you believe, Airstream trailers are not the only cool campers out there. No, there are others.

The Out-Of-This-World Cool Cricket Trailer
The Out-Of-This-World Cool Cricket Trailer

In an earlier post on Vogel Talks RVing, I introduced the adorably minimalist Cricket Trailer.

Designed and built by Garrett Finney, an ex-NASA architect, the part tent, part RV Cricket Trailer is out-of-this-world cool.

Combining his small-space expertise and backpacking background, Finney designed the Cricket Trailer, a small, self-contained pop-up trailer. It’s his response to today’s house-on-wheels bigger-is-better RV culture.

The Cricket is a kind of hybrid tent and trailer, made of aluminum, wood and steel, with a pop-up style roof—not a house on wheels but a portable adventure living space.

The name Cricket was inspired by an early design sketch, in which the lifts on the pop-up looked like the legs of the insect.

Many of the people who are buying Cricket trailers have never owned a camping trailer before. In describing the company’s philosophy, Finney harkened back to the old 7-Up ads from the 1970s.

The Out-Of-This-World Cool Cricket Trailer
The Out-Of-This-World Cool Cricket Trailer

It packs most everything you’ll need for a week or longer on the road, and despite its small size does not skimp on function.

It’s light. The Cricket Trailer weighs only 1,460 pounds unloaded, yet packs on board fresh water and grey water tanks, an energy-efficient lightweight electric water heater, electrical shore power connection, exterior shower system, a recessed sink with folding cover, energy efficient-water pump, and optional energy efficient refrigerator. All the comforts of home, only smaller and roadworthy.

And there’s ample storage. Lift up a seating cushion to reveal substantial gear stowage space. Under-bed and under-kitchen counter storage adds to available space for your stuff. The roof mounting points were designed to accept a number of modern car top cargo systems.

It also strikes an interesting chord between full-blown trailer and utilitarian pop-up. The walls are rigid from floor to ceiling, and with a simple pop, the roof extends a few feet revealing mesh windows and allowing air circulation.

Underneath, the Cricket Trailer totes a rugged torsion beam suspension and features a foot of ground clearance (an extra two and a half inches with the Sport Edition), built to military spec stress testing standards.

The Out-Of-This-World Cool Cricket Trailer
The Out-Of-This-World Cool Cricket Trailer

The Cricket Trailer is now available in two models: Standard Cricket and Sport Edition.

Features and specifications common to both models include a queen size bed, interior standing height of 6 feet 4 inches, water heater, indoor sink, external shower, and high output LED interior lights.

Optional trailer fixtures include 5,000 BTU air conditioner ($560), tongue box ($315), roof rack bars ($300), kid’s berth ($280), portable toilet ($140), top loading fridge ($1,000), 80 watt solar electric pack ($700), second battery ($240), road safety kit including mounted spare tire ($375), great outdoor kit including awning ($375), and kitchen furnishings including coffee and portable stove ($280).

The Standard Cricket complete with v-berth lounge, water heater, and exterior shower
package starts at $21,700 MSRP.

The Sport Edition complete with exclusive silver panels, higher ground clearance, rugged build, road safety kit, and roof rack standard starts at $24,290 MSRP.

Although the Cricket is earthbound, the results are out-of-this-world cool.

Elio: Your Next RV Toad Car?

Your next RV toad car could have two seats, three wheels, get 84 miles to the gallon, and cost only $6,800.

Elio: Your Next RV Toad Car?
Elio: Your Next RV Toad Car?

Phoenix, Arizona-based Elio Motors wants to revolutionize American roads with its tiny car, which is the same length as a Honda Fit but half the weight and less than half the cost. With a curb weight around 1,200 pounds, the Elio would be the lightest passenger car on the road.

Perhaps ironically, Elio Motors plans to build the new three-wheeler at the former General Motors’ plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, that used to build the 8,400-pound Hummers.

Founded by automotive engineer Paul Elio in 2008, Elio Motors is scheduled to begin production next March with an initial hire of 1,500 workers. The company hopes to sell 50,000 cars during its first full year and as many as 250,000 units annually after five years.

More than 27,000 people have already reserved one. So far, reservation holders are older, more affluent buyers who will use the Elio as a second or third car for commuting.

Elio: Your Next RV Toad Car?
Elio: Your Next RV Toad Car?

Eventually, though, Elio believes the car will appeal to high school and college students as well as used-car drivers who want something newer and more reliable. He also hopes to eventually export it to other countries.

Officially classified as a motorcycle because it has fewer than four wheels, the Elio is nonetheless mechanically more car than it is bike. It has a conventional steering wheel, foot pedals, and shift lever and will come powered by a three-cylinder, 0.9 liter, 55 horsepower, fuel-injected automotive engine that drives the front wheels via either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Traction control, stability control, and antilock brakes will come standard. Its two front wheels stick out by a foot on both sides, aiding balance and preventing the vehicle from tipping.

The Elio has a top speed of more than 100 miles per hour and gets an estimated 84 mpg on the highway and 49 mpg in city driving.

The Elio is engineered to achieve a five-star crash rating by automotive standards with unibody construction, a hardened steel roll cage, crumple zones at the front and rear, and added side impact protection.

Elio: Your Next RV Toad Car?
Elio: Your Next RV Toad Car?

It would typically require motorcycle registration and plates but whether it would require a motorcycle license in most states to legally operate has yet to be determined.

The Elio’s two seats sit front and back instead of side by side, so the driver is positioned in the center with the passenger directly behind. That arrangement, plus the low seating position—the Elio is just 54 inches tall—and the lack of power steering may take a little getting used to.

Elio keeps the costs down in several ways. The car only has one door, on the left side. Having three wheels also makes it cheaper.

It has standard air conditioning, power windows and door locks, and an AM/FM radio. More features, such as navigation or blind-spot detection, can be ordered through Elio’s suppliers.

Elio will also save money by selling the cars directly through a network of its own stores and not through franchised dealers. Elio plans stores in 60 major metropolitan areas with multiple locations in each. They’ll be serviced by car repair chain Pep Boys.

The Elio is all about providing basic transportation on a budget, and from that standpoint the final production version may indeed deliver the goods. Whether sufficient commuters and RVers, otherwise accustomed to larger and more powerful rides, will embrace the tiny three-wheeled Elio in sufficient numbers for the company to turn a profit remains to be seen.

Smart phones are constantly updated or upgraded, computers keep getting smaller and faster, and cars are continually incorporating new and better advancements in safety and comfort.

And RVers also have the same insatiable desire to update and upgrade their home-on-wheels to newer and bigger models or to install popular and useful upgrades to their existing model.

Following is a list of the top five upgrades currently available for updating older RV models:

Satellite upgrade

People on the go don’t want to miss out on their favorite TV shows and sports events. The next generation of portable or mountable satellite dishes has emerged. It is becoming increasingly popular, and some would say necessary, to have the complete RV home-away-from-home experience.

High-powered satellite dishes that can be mounted to the top of an RV, or a carryout satellite that can be set up on tripod or picnic tables to ensure the maximum TV reception are the norm rather than the exception.

Despite the small size of some of the latest satellite set-ups available, their reception abilities are usually incredible. So, next time you want to watch the big game while camping, plan ahead and upgrade your satellite system.

High definition TVs

Upgrade your RV lighting with LED replacement bulbs for brighter light and better visibility.

Installing a satellite upgrade for high-definition programming begs the need for a new LED flat screen TV. One of the most common installations for RVs 5+ years old is the replacement of the old TV with a sleeker, more functional and attractive looking LCD/LED TV.

You’ll likely need to install a new mount. These mounting options range from traditional flat screen wall mount to tilting mount. The most popular type of mount is the articulating mount which allows the TV to be pulled out from the wall, tilted from right to left, and pushed back when you’re finished watching.

LED lights

Have you ever noticed that the lights in your RV become hot after being on for only a short time? Have you been horrified at how quickly your battery drains while camping without access to electricity?

Upgrade your RV lighting with LED replacement bulbs for brighter light and better visibility. LED lights stay cool to the touch and are at a minimum for risk of fire. In addition, they use an average of ⅕ the amount of electricity that standard bulbs use. This prevents electric burnout while camping (a very unpleasant experience) and saves on energy consumption and electricity costs. Some bulbs come with built-in surge protection.

Back up camera

Few vehicles roll off the assembly line without the latest and greatest technological advances a rear-view or back-up camera.

Due to the size of most RVs, it is virtually impossible to really know what’s behind you when you’re backing up. A back up camera is especially useful for those with children or pets. The installation and purchase of a back up camera is comparatively small, and many local RV dealers are able to complete this upgrade quickly than you’d expect.

Solar panel installs

Unlike an AC generator, a solar-power system has no moving parts, makes no noise or smell, and requires little maintenance. A solar system can be cost-effective over the long term and can be sized to suit your needs, whether that’s just keeping a single battery charged or maintaining a large battery bank for running all the modern conveniences of a large rig.

A basic RV solar-power system consists of one or more solar panels to generate charging current, a charge controller, batteries, and ancillary components such as brackets, mounting hardware, and wiring.

Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells that convert the sun’s energy into electricity. Solar panels are rated in watts of output and the wattage rating is determined by multiplying the panel’s peak power voltage by its peak power amperage.

There’s always a new addition that can be made to any RV-lovers home.
