Not All RV Manufacturers Are Created Equal

Once you are able to determine much of what you want in an RV, you can begin to research the manufacturers and decide which company you will trust to build the gorgeous new coach you deserve.

Following are a number of questions to ask when it comes to the people building your    dream machine:

Are They Run By Businesspeople Or RV People That Know How To Run a Business?

The difference between a run-of-the-mill recreational vehicle and an RV filled with innovative and useful features built with an attention to detail and exceptional quality is all about the operation. If your RV is designed and built by people that love RVs  themselves, you’re much more likely to purchase a product that is everything you want: stylish, comfortable, reliable, and packed full of standard features others call extras.

Class-leading RVs are the result of companies that understand their customers because of the passion they share for the RV lifestyle and the understanding they have for what qualifies as a truly great recreational vehicle.

Do They Care About Innovation?

World's Most Expensive RV Sells For $3 Million
World’s Most Expensive RV Sells For $3 Million

Some RV manufacturers take pride in finding out what their consumers care about, what they like and don’t like about their current coach, and what they’d love to have in their next one. Other RV makers rest on their laurels, re-packaging the same tired products year after year. How can you tell the difference?

Look at what each manufacturer has done lately—what features and breakthroughs have they introduced to the market in recent years?

How are they making an effort to improve from one year to the next?

If you struggle to find answers, that particular company probably shouldn’t be building your new motorhome.

Where Do Their Values Lie?

Does the manufacturer you’re considering for the construction of your new RV talk only about their products, or do they take the time to explain how and why they have your best interests in mind?

do your dream

A great coach is the result of a large group of great people, driven to be the very best through honesty, accountability, and a desire to treat customers like family, both before and after a motorhome has been delivered.

Do They Make An Effort To Develop Relationships With Their Customers?

With some RV manufacturers, you’re unlikely to speak with anyone on the team unless you’re contacting them with a complaint. This isn’t the way lasting relationships are fostered.

A motorhome is no small purchase, and the best manufacturers are run by those who understand what it takes to create a lifelong customer. A connection like this is the result of a total dedication to transparency, integrity, and responsiveness.

If you have a problem, those who assembled your motorhome have a problem that must be handled with honesty and an emphasis on making things right, right away. If you get the feeling that one of the manufacturers you’re considering might not react this way, move on.

The Differences Between Gas, Diesel & Luxury Diesel RVs

One of the primary aspects involved in selecting a new RV is making a decision on the type of motorhome you need.

The debate between gas vs. diesel motorhome engines has fueled many hours of debate within the RV community. It can be difficult knowing which way to go.

While many shoppers consider either a gas or diesel-powered coach, some prefer the added comfort and technology a luxury diesel RV provides.

If you are trying to decide between a gas or diesel motorhome, try to decide what features are most important to you. There is no right or wrong option, just advantages and disadvantages worth considering.

Gas or Diesel: Cost

The first consideration for many people shopping for a new motorhome is price. How expensive is the motor coach?

2015 Thor Motor Coach Axis RUV
2015 Thor Motor Coach Axis RUV

Motorhomes fueled by gasoline are often the choice of first-time RV buyers or RVers who don’t live in their coaches fulltime as they are less expensive than most diesel offerings. Gas models will usually not offer the same level of features and technology as their diesel counterparts, although some manufacturers build high-end gas motorhomes with amenities that rival many of the mid-level diesel units.

Long considered to have the most advantages, diesel engines typically have more power and increased torque compared to those that run on gas. With increased torque comes better towing capability and improved performance during hill climbs. If you are looking to purchase a large Class A or will be towing a boat or large SUV, then diesel may be your best option.

But for the most part, if you want to save money but still get a great coach, you’re probably looking for a higher-end gas model. If you have been saving for retirement in order to become a snowbird or full-time RVer, a luxury diesel pusher motor coach won’t disappoint. Also, diesel and luxury diesel coaches almost always retain their value longer than gas motorhomes.

Because most luxury diesel motorcoaches look and feel just like the nicest of homes, they are also the most expensive. Manufacturers equip their luxury diesel coaches with the latest and greatest features and technology available, so whether or not the increased price tag is worth it depends on what you want from your new motorhome.

While diesel engines have their advantages, these come at a price. Gasoline engines are cheaper to purchase and also less costly to maintain. If you are strictly making your decision on initial cost, then look at your gas options first.

Gas or Diesel: Fuel Efficiency

Despite that fact that diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline, it’s no secret that diesel coaches are much more fuel efficient than gas-powered models.

This is due in large part to the fact that diesel has a greater energy value than gasoline, delivering up to 10 percent better fuel economy by volume.

If you are planning to rack up big miles on your motorhome or treat it as your year-round or seasonal residence, you’d be wise to at least consider a diesel-powered option. But if you intend to use your motorhome for the occasional vacation and weekends at the lake, and then store it for winter, or are still trying to decide if the RV lifestyle is right for you, a gas-powered coach may be a better fit.

Gas or Diesel: Interior Comfort

Quality RV manufacturers craft comfortable, well-appointed interiors for both their gas and diesel-powered models. Depending on the brand, some gas-powered motorhomes can look like luxury coaches on the inside. Still, gas motorcoaches typically offer less comfort and technology than diesel and luxury diesel RVs. It all comes down to what you and your travel partner find important to enjoying your home on the road.

Luxury Diesel Motorcoaches

Luxury Getaway in a Formula 1 Palatial Motorhome
Luxury Getaway in a Formula 1 Palatial Motorhome

For starters, luxury diesel RVs are diesel-powered coaches equipped with increased horsepower, a heightened level of features and technology and high-end furniture, cabinetry, and fixtures.

If you’re a retiree, someone who is planning to live in their motorhome full time, or just want and can afford the best that industry has to offer, you may be best suited by a luxury diesel coach.

The following are the largest differentiators associated with luxury diesel motorcoaches.

Most luxury diesel motorhomes feature a custom chassis built specifically for the unit it will support. This increases reliability, comfort, stability, and weight capacity. Luxury diesel motorhomes almost always offer a more powerful engine as well. Combine both of these advantages and you have a coach that can tow more than any other type of motorhome.

It is important to take your time while considering your budget, wants and needs, future travel plans, and any other items you feel are important in making your decision, such as safety, quality, and reliability.

RV Shows

RV shows are a great place to begin exploring what’s out there. These events allow you to explore different RV manufacturers and models while providing you with an opportunity to speak with dealer and manufacturer representatives, as well as other owners and shoppers in an ideal setting where your questions can be answered.

You’ll also be able to compare floor plans and features side-by-side.

Aside from dealers and manufacturers, individuals representing virtually every aspect of the RV lifestyle are present at most events, so you can discover a wealth of knowledge that goes beyond your purchase decision.

RV Manufacturers

Millennium Luxury Coach

Even if you are not leaning toward a particular manufacturer, information provided by the companies that build recreational vehicles can be helpful in familiarizing yourself with the latest and greatest models being offered by each coach builder, as well as the principles and values that guide each organization.

If possible, visit the manufacturers you are considering, as many offer tours of their facilities. Manufacturer websites and brochures are also helpful in better getting to know the big players in the RV industry. Just as it is essential to find a reputable dealer, it is equally important to make sure a manufacturer you are considering stands behind its products.

Internet

Of course, there are plenty of ways to do your homework online using sites like vogeltalksrving.com. Sites like these provide news on the latest and greatest in RVing along with reviews on many of the newest models available.

Internet forums are a good way to obtain honest feedback from current owners and learn from their experiences.

Publications

Print publications are still a great place to find reviews and other helpful insights when searching for a new RV. Magazines such as MotorHome and RV Gazette can shed additional light on a coach you’re considering.

Tips For Selecting Your RV

Take notes on each coach you see, focusing on your likes and dislikes.

Do not accept that what you want is not available, because it probably is.

Do not underestimate the importance of selecting the right floor plan for your needs.

Remember that what is important to someone else may not be important to you. For example, an outdoor entertainment center may or may not be on your radar.

When exploring a coach that interests you, interact with the unit as much as you can—sit in the seats, test several features, adjust the mirrors, extend the slides, and walk around the interior as if you were already living inside, making sure there is enough room for you and your travel companions.

Examine the overall fit and finish of every RV you view, paying special attention to the quality of the materials used and the workmanship.

Choosing the right options is important. You may think you can get by with less, but  foregoing useful components can leave you without the items you really need to enjoy life’s highway.

If a certain level of privacy is important to you, keep that in mind while touring a particular model.

Snowbird Basics

Winter is a time for boots, snow shovels, and icy roads… unless you’re a snowbird who RVs to the Sun Belt.

As Neil Young once sang, “the summer ends and the winter winds begin to holler all around the bend…”

The cooler temperatures have us thinking about the coming winter: snow, ice, and bone-chilling cold. You’re familiar with the drill: dig out the snow shovel, take the snow blower on a test run, and pull out the warm winter sweaters, parkas, mitts, and snow boots. Such are the joys of a northern winter!

The entire history of the human race is largely a search for comfort. Warm southern winters certainly rate high on my comfort scale.

How about snowbirding?

Snowbirds are typically retired seniors who have the desire and financial ability to be away from home for extended periods of time.

The snowbird lifestyle is to our liking since we can take our home with us when the cold weather arrives and snow begins to falls. For us the snowbird lifestyle is the best of both worlds.

Preparing your home for an extended absence requires thorough thought and planning.

Before heading south, snowbirds need to take steps to secure and winterize their homes.

Creating a customized checklists is one way to keep track of your seasonal preparations.

Consider the following tips as a starting point when creating your winter-ready checklist.

Check expiry dates for travel documents, insurance, and credit cards.

Check with your insurance to determine how extended absences may affect coverage.

You are escaping the snow, but your home is not. Arrange with a neighbor, relative, friend, or snow removal service to keep sidewalks clear and your home secure.

Ask a friend, trustworthy neighbor, or relative to be the contact person for your home. It’s important to have someone check your home on a regular basis, remove sales flyers, and be available in emergency situations. Your home should look like someone is living there.

Provide the contact person and other neighbors, relatives, and friends with pertinent information including smart phone and email address, vehicle and home insurance, security system, furnace repair, description of RV and toad or tow truck and trailer with plate numbers.

Place a temporary hold on your newspaper delivery.

Receiving your mail in a timely manner can be a major concern for Snowbirds, full-timers, and other RVers who plan to be on the road for an extended period of time. Arrange with your local postal service to have your mail forwarded to a mail forwarding address. Trusted and reliable mail forwarding services include Good SamEscapees, and Dakota Post.

Unplug all electronics and electrical appliances—microwave, washer and dryer, stove, refrigerator, coffee pot, toaster oven, TVs, audio equipment, radios, and lamps.

Reduce costs and save energy consumption by turning the thermostat down to 45-50 degrees F (7-10 C).

Empty the refrigerator and turn it off. Unplug all electronics and electrical appliances.

Check to ensure that all smoke alarms are in working order and have fresh batteries.

Adjust the water heater thermostat to “pilot” or turn it off. Turn off the water supply at the main valve.

Take Retirement for a Test Drive in an RV

At some point we all dream of what our retirement will look like.

For some it’s a condo on the beach, perhaps spending more time with family or maybe getting into a new hobby.

For us and a growing number of Americans and Canadians it’s hitting the open road in a recreational vehicle.

The motivation for many is to escape the snow and bitter cold of a northern climate.

Plunging temperatures, icy roads, and the back-breaking chore of shoveling snow–over and over and over–has cold-climate residents dreaming of exchanging their snowplows for golf carts, trading boots for flip flops, and spending winters in the sunbelt.

Others sell their home to enjoy the full-time lifestyle while exploring potential areas where they might settle permanently if they decide to hang up the keys.

Before taking the plunge, however, prospective snowbirds and full timers should educate themselves.

The RV lifestyle is not for everyone.

While many have taken a vacation in a trailer or camper, making the commitment to the life of a snowbird or full-timer is a different story.

When venturing down that road, you may have a vague idea of the obstacles to overcome.

Will you be able to spend that much time together in a confined space?

Will the dream match the reality?

Can you afford it?

Even though we didn’t have all the answers, we were committed to trying. We knew what we didn’t want our golden years to look like, and that knowledge was enough for us to take the leap.

After having “enough winters to last a lifetime,” I said to my wife, Dania, “I’ve shoveled my last snow. I’m heading south this winter in our RV. You can come if you wish.”

And, as they say the rest is history.

But Where to Start

Living half time or longer in an RV requires careful planning for everything from finances to organization.

Las Vegas RV Resort © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved
Las Vegas RV Resort © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

An ongoing part of the process is determining where to go, how to get there, what to do when you get there, and how long to stay.

Things to Consider

Get your finances in order. Regardless of what type of retirement you plan, you must ensure that you’re able to fund your dream.

Some people think that after the initial investment, RVing is a cheap lifestyle. It can be, but you have to keep in mind the cost of fuel and maintenance, park rental fees and utilities, license and insurance for both the RV and any towing or towed vehicle, entertainment (satellite TV, Internet, etc.), and so on.

Will you have routine doctor appointments that require you to be in a certain area at a certain time?

Do you have any scheduled surgeries?

What about dental work?

Think about attending an RV seminar or boot camp offered by various organizations.

Keep in mind that living together in a small space can be challenging to any relationship. If you and your partner get on each other’s nerves by the end of a week-long vacation, this may not be the life style for you.

Have a 12-month travel plan that keeps you in the right part of the country at the right time of the year. This helps with budgeting as well.

While there are no hard statistics on how many Americans are living the life of a full-timer, the number of RV-owning households is growing, as indicated in a survey conducted by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). According to RVIA, approximately 8.9 million U.S. households—or 8.5 percent—currently own some form of RV. This represents a 7.9 percent increase from 2005. That’s a lot of opportunities to take retirement for a test-drive.

We’ll be on the road again before the first snowflakes hit the ground. See y’all down the road and happy trails.

Lifestyle Luxury RV already produces some of the largest interiors in fifth wheels as the only manufacturer producing a full-wall slide fifth wheel. Now, full timers RVers can expect even more space, according to a company news release.

Full-timers are looking for coaches with the interior spaciousness and storage of the homes they’ve left behind. Lifestyle has committed to filling this void in the market with an extra six inches of living space. All five of the wide body models will meet the growing demand for more spacious interiors with greater amounts of storage, larger kitchens, baths, and wider hallways.

“Our customers are looking for more than just a beautiful coach, it needs to stand up to full-time use and have more storage,” stated Lifestyle Product Manager Gary Stanley.

“I think we’ve delivered. Lifestyle is already built on a superior frame and now we’ve added that extra element that really appeals to people who spend most of the year on the road.”

Designed for year-round travel there is a copious amount of storage throughout. Increased living space means more storage, too. The rear basement storage, found only in Lifestyle, increases from 33 to 37 cubic feet. At the front of the coach there is a generous 218 square feet of finished pass through storage. A large walk-in wardrobe and roomy linen closets in the bedroom provide plenty of room for all the essentials. Now there’s more room for a washer/dryer.

The new wide body models have all the luxurious features synonymous with the Lifestyle name. In the kitchen, Corian countertops, a double stainless steel sink and residential raised-panel cabinets in glazed cherry are standard.

A six-and-a-half foot slide-out height in the living room allows for larger windows that open the space further. The added interior width also allows plenty of room for large entertainment centers with fireplaces and desks. An outdoor entertainment center with optional flat screen TV is standard equipment on all wide body models.

“We know our customers have patiently anticipated the debut of our wide body models and we’re finally ready to get them on the market,” explained Lifestyle Luxury RV General Manager Dymon Farrer.

“Just as every detail of a Lifestyle is carefully considered and executed, redesigning the wide body models was no different. We want to ensure our customers will get the most out of their dollar.”
