More June RV Manufacturer Recalls & Safety Notice

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced recall notices involving three recreational vehicle manufacturers—Keystone RV, Foretravel Motorcoach, Forest River, Winnebago Industries Inc., and Thor Motor Coach—and one safety notice from Atwood Mobile Products.

Keystone RV Company

Goshen, Indiana-based Keystone RV Company is recalling 440 model year 2012 and 2013 Vantage RVs manufactured from October 12, 2011 through May 7, 2012. These vehicles were manufactured without protective (aka. gimp) molding on the metal around the holding tank valves.

As a result, the user may suffer cuts to hands and arms when reaching past the sharp edges of the access cut-out in order to operate the holding tank valves.
Keystone will notify owners, and dealers will install the protective gimp molding around the access area for the holding tank valves, free of charge.

Foretravel Motorcoach, Inc.

Nacogdoches, Texas-based Foretravel Motorcoach, Inc. is recalling 121 model year 2007-2010 Phenix and 2007-2011 Nimbus RVs equipped with SE-GI windows.

The adhesive bond on some panels between the glass portion and the hinge may de-bond, allowing the panel to detach and fall from the vehicle.
If this occurred during travel it could create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

Foretravel will notify owners, and is working with SE-GI products to develop remedy instructions and obtain parts.

Forest River, Inc.

Elkhart, Indiana-based Forest River, Inc. is recalling seven model year 2012-2013 Shasta Revere RVs.

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Cargo Carrying Capacity Specification is incorrect on the federal certification label and the tire information label. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Part 567, “Certification.”

Incorrect weight information may lead to overloading, which may cause axle or tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Forest River will notify owners, and include the corrected labels in each letter. Forest River has not provided a notification schedule. Owners should contact Forest River at 1-574-825-7178.

Winnebago Industries Inc.

Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago Industries Inc. is recalling 62 model year 2009 through 2012 Winnebago Commercial vehicle model J38S and model year 2009 and 2010 Adventurer motorhomes manufactured from October 30, 2008 through September 9, 2011, and one 2009 Itasca Suncruiser motorhome built November 2009.

These motorhome chassis are equipped with Bosch hydraulic disc brakes which when exposed to long periods of time of non-driving may experience diametrical brake caliper piston growth and reduced piston to bore clearance, potentially leading to brake drag, and overheating, resulting in reduced brake performance.

Reduced brake performance increases the risk of a crash.

Freightliner Custom Chassis (FCCC) will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles, free of charge.

The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with a remedy or owner notification schedule for this campaign. Owners may contact Winnebago at 1-641-585-3535 or Daimler Trucks at 1-800-547-0712.

Thor Motor Coach

Elkhart, Indiana-based Thor Motor Coach (TMCRV) is recalling 90 model year 2008-2010 Outlaw and model year 2011 Avanti RVs manufactured from January 24, 2008 through September 28, 2010, equipped with Bosch hydraulic disc brakes.

Hydraulic brake equipped motorhome chassis exposed to long periods of time of non-driving may experience diametrical brake caliper piston growth and reduced piston to bore clearance, potentially leading to brake drag and overheating, resulting in reduced brake performance.

Atwood Mobile Products LLC

Elkhart, Indiana-based Atwood Mobile Products LLC has determined that a safety issue may be present in the 8935-III AC and 8940-III AC Atwood furnaces powered by 110-volt/AC power (12-volt/DC models are not affected).

There have been gas control valves which are suspect and need to be replaced. The suspect furnaces are contained with a manufacturing date between May 18, 2009 and March 29, 2012.

Atwood said it is possible for the units affected that the gas valves can stick in the open position causing a potential fire hazard. Customers with one of these units must not operate the furnace until the replacement of the valve assembly has been completed by an Atwood Authorized Service Center.

To confirm whether or not a furnace is part of this campaign, review the serial number of the suspect furnace. The serial number will be listed on the blower housing of the furnace on the data tag. Identified units will meet the following criteria:

The model numbers affected are 8935-III AC and 8940-III AC furnaces

Manufacturing dates between 5/18/2009 and 3/29/2012

Enova and Freightliner Display Green for Free Vehicle

With more than 16.3 million vehicles in operation, the nation’s fleets possess enough capacity to drive initial ramp-up scale in the EV OEM supply chains. This is the first Program that is engineered to eliminate the overall incremental costs associated with buying and operating an all-electric vehicle, making the Program attractive to fleets that are both large and small.

Freightliner Announces New SL Series Motorhome Chassis

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) has good news for RV enthusiasts on the lookout for the next progression in motorhome power and performance. The new FCCC SL Series motorhome chassis, launched during last week’s 49th Annual 2011 National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Kentucky, delivers both and much more, according to a news release.

The only Class A motorhome chassis to be equipped with the Detroit DD13 engine, the FCCC SL Series reflects two years of planning and engineering, shaped by customer demands and technological advances.

A 13-liter, diesel engine with 500-hp and 1,650 ft-lb torque, the DD13—exclusive to FCCC within the RV industry—pairs its power with a fuel-efficient design, said Tony Sippel, RV product manager at FCCC. An Amplified Common Rail System (ACRS) optimizes each injection event, and an advanced cooling system also helps reduce fuel consumption without sacrificing engine performance.

Equipped with an Allison 4000 MH transmission, the FCCC SL Series motorhome chassis boasts the same reliability, durability, and maneuverability customers have come to expect from an FCCC product.

The FCCC SL Series offers a standard ZF independent front suspension handling a Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) of 14,600, 16,000, 18,000, and 20,000 lbs. The 18,000 and 20,000 GAWR suspensions include an assist steering cylinder to achieve a greater wheel cut and to reduce the steering effort needed by the driver. The result is a smoother, more comfortable ride.

The DD13 also features BlueTec Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emissions technology to meet long-term EPA 2010 emissions requirements while maximizing fuel efficiency.

The DD13 has a ribbed cast-iron engine block to reduce engine noise and vibration for a quieter, smoother ride, and the FCCC SL Series comes standard with a ZF independent front suspension.

Recognizing that maneuverability is a primary concern for RV pilots, the FCCC SL Series chassis features up to a 60-degree wheel cut depending upon tire size, allowing drivers to maneuver through tight spots, including parking lots and inner-city travel.

The FCCC SL Series offers unmatched support, service, and safety enhancements.

The DD13 also offers Virtual Technician, which integrates GPS technology with engine diagnostics. Should the “check engine” light come on in the RV, the data is sent to the Detroit Customer Support Center. The information is then sent to the customer, along with a choice of authorized service outlets and the opportunity to schedule a repair.

Virtual Technician also alerts the service outlet as to which parts are needed, shortening the wait time for the RV owner.

Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes come standard and provide a shorter stopping distance than traditional foundation drum brakes.

Other optional features include Bendix VORAD Collision Warning System and SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) by Bendix CVS. VORAD is a radar-based warning system used by commercial vehicle manufacturers, while SmarTire tracks the pressure and temperature of each tire to warn the driver of potential problems.

Production on the FCCC SL Series chassis will begin in April 2012. The FCCC SL Series chassis joins FCCC’s full lineup of motorhome chassis, including FRED, XC, MC, and S2CRV.

Guide to Winterizing Your Motorhome

With the arrival of autumn heralding the colder months to come, it’s the time of year when many travelers exit the highways and settle in until next year’s season. Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) knows that off-season RV care is a popular topic of discussion among owners and enthusiasts, and we regularly field questions and share tips at rallies and on our Facebook page.

If it’s time to park your motorhome for the winter, follow these guidelines to ensure your RV stays in top shape.

Start by changing the oil, if you’ll be storing the motorhome for six months or more, and filling your fuel tank to prevent condensation above the fuel level. Also ensure that your tires are fully inflated.

Next, you’ll need to find the right storage location.

Inside storage spaces are ideal, provided you keep your RV away from electric generators or transformers and the garage is not illuminated by mercury vapor lamps. Welding equipment should also not be used in an RV storage space.

If your RV stays outside in the off-season, try to protect it from the elements as much as possible. If it will be receiving direct sunlight, cover the tires but do not put petroleum-based protective sprays or gels on them. Make sure you cover any areas that may attract nesting animals. And if you’re near the coast, diaper each wheel with a tarp to prevent salt air from damaging your brakes.

To prevent flat spots from forming on your tires, raise the vehicle and keep it elevated using jack stands or blocks. Ant spray around the base of the supports will help keep unwanted insects at bay.

Once your RV is in place, keep this checklist handy, and consult your owner’s manual for specific details regarding your model:

  • Lubricate all chassis grease fittings, checking for cracks or torn dust boots
  • Lubricate the exhaust brake cylinder (Pac Brake, if equipped) and other moving parts
  • Add fuel additives such as diesel stabilizer and algaecide
  • Clean the battery posts, and top off the battery with distilled water
  • Completely disconnect the batteries if possible. Otherwise, unhook the negative cables to prevent draining the batteries
  • Manually drain the air tanks
  • Clean the radiator’s exterior on both the engine side and the engine compartment door side with a solution such as Simple Green® Pro HD
  • Top off all fluids
  • Place laundry dryer sheets or flea collars in compartments to repel bugs
  • Place a can over the exhaust pipe
  • Turn off the propane gas
  • Follow generator storage instructions
  • Fill the shower and the toilet sprayer with antifreeze that is safe for drinking water holding tanks

Pilot Flying J Offers DEF at Pump

Knoxville, Tennessee-based Pilot Flying J now offers Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) at the pump at more than 600 fueling lanes at 135 nationwide locations, providing customers with the industry’s largest network of DEF at the pump.

With dozens of additional locations being added this fall, by October 1 Pilot Flying J will offer DEF at the pump at a total of more than 1,100 fuel lanes at 175 locations. By May 1, 2012, DEF will be available at 1,800 fuel lanes at 300 locations nationwide, Pilot Flying J recently announced in a press release.

DEF is required in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems on late model Diesel Pusher motorhomes built on a Freightliner or Spartan chassis and certain diesel trucks. The SCR systems are meant to reduce levels of nitrogen oxide in tailpipe emissions and DEF works to convert nitrogen oxide into pure nitrogen and water vapor. DEF will be in increasing demand because it is required in diesel chassis built after January 1, 2010, and equipped with SCR systems to meet 2010 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tailpipe standards.

With this expanded service, Pilot Flying J allows drivers to dispense the fluid conveniently from the fuel island into the DEF tank of their motorhome or truck.

“The convenience of our customers is always our top priority, and we’re proud to offer them this extensive network of DEF dispensers at Pilot Flying J locations nationwide. More pumps, more locations, and more savings will make life easier for drivers everywhere,” said Mark Hazelwood, Pilot Flying J executive vice president.

“We recognize the requirements stemming from the 2010 emission reduction regulations and are doing everything we can to provide customers with fast, friendly, and clean service while meeting these requirements. By Oct. 1, DEF will be available at more than 1,100 diesel fuel lanes at Pilot Flying J locations across the country, and all DEF dispensed at the pump and sold in our stores is American Petroleum Institute-certified.”

At Pilot Flying J travel centers and travel plazas, DEF and fuel dispensers are located together on one pump, so customers swipe their card once to re-fuel, fill up with DEF, and get on their way. Drivers save time with just one stop at the fuel lane and only one transaction.

“We expect professional drivers will appreciate the convenience of the 1,100 at-the-pump DEF dispensers,” Hazelwood said. “They’ll save time without having to purchase and fill up using DEF bottles, also eliminating the need to carry and lift the 25-pound containers. With DEF at the pump, there’s less opportunity for spillage and possible equipment damage as spillage can cause corrosion to aluminum tanks. Offering DEF at the pump brings many advantages for our customers.”

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a nontoxic solution of 67.5% water and 32.5% automotive grade urea. DEF is stable, colorless, and odorless and meets accepted international standards for purity and composition. DEF is used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to change the oxides of nitrogen emissions in diesel exhaust into nitrogen gas and water vapor. SCR is an after-treatment technology that treats exhaust gas downstream of the engine by injecting DEF into the exhaust stream. The goal of an SCR system is to reduce levels of NOx (oxides of nitrogen emitted from engines) in the environment. Diesel engines purchased after Jan. 1, 2010, require the use of DEF in vehicles using SCR technology to reduce emissions and meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2010 tailpipe standards.

On the road again with Newmar

It’s that time of year again. The 2011 GoNewmar Road Show is set to begin in ten days.

Four members of Newmar’s management team are “hitting the road” again this year—Newmar’s owner Mahlon Miller, Chairman and CEO Richard Parks, President Matthew Miller, and V.P. of Sales and Marketing John Sammut (accompanied by their spouses).

Covering 4,500 miles through 14 eastern states in 20 days, the traveling motorhomes of Newmar hit the road on May 31 for another road show tour.

Four motor coaches from Newmar’s 2012 Class A diesel line will be visiting 12 dealers in nine states and one of Newmar’s largest suppliers, Freightliner.

Freightliner Expands Its Customer Support with USB Card

Is your motorhome built on a Freightliner chassis? Are you planning to purchase a new motorhome in 2011?

Already the only chassis manufacturer to offer 24/7 factory-direct support of its motorcoaches, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) is expanding its service with a powerful resource that customers can fit into their pockets.

Launched in early 2011, FCCC’s 24/7 Direct initiative created a constantly available, easily accessible network with the goal of providing customers the best possible assistance and answers to even the most complex chassis issues.

A company press release indicates that the new 24/7 Direct service cards are being mailed this month to all purchasers of new motorhomes built on an FCCC chassis dating back to January 1, 2011. They’re printed with key support contact information and the customer Vehicle Identification Number to serve as a valuable quick reference, and an embedded USB flash drive makes the card a virtual library of chassis data.

By simply flipping the drive out from one end of the card and plugging it into a computer, a customer gains access to a wealth of information including warranties, maintenance schedules, EPA 2010 emission technology featuring selective catalytic reduction (SCR), vendor categories, website links, and entire user manuals. Plus, with a gigabyte of memory on board, there’s plenty of room for additional downloads and updates, enabling customers to utilize the USB for personal storage.

“FCCC wanted to develop a resource that would enable our customers to easily access all of the essential information they need about their chassis,” said Dave Hoover, senior manager of Customer Support at FCCC. “The 24/7 Direct card and USB drive is compact, but it contains volumes of information that will be important to our customers.

FCCC’s customer assistance phone line (1-800-FTL-HELP) is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a team of well-qualified customer service advisors who all have hands-on plant experience and boast an average experience level of 16 years. To complement their expertise, on-the-ground support can be found at more than 400 FCCC service locations in North America. More than 90 of those locations are also part of the Freightliner Oasis Network, a group of dealerships across the country dedicated to serving FCCC RV customers.

The Freightliner Oasis Network is specifically tailored to the RV customer. Each service location has specially trained RV service technicians, separate bays for RV service, secure parking for RV customers, and additional amenities specifically for RV owners.
