Fleetwood Introduces New Southwind Floor Plans

Decatur, Indiana-based Fleetwood RV Inc. has introduced innovative new floor plans for the 2014 Southwind 34A and 36L Class A gas motorhomes.

Southwind-New34A_largeIntroduced in 1970, the iconic Southwind is one of the company’s original brands and has a reputation for innovation, quality, and value, according to a company news release.

Boasting a generous galley kitchen area encased with stylish glass backsplash and solid surface countertops, the Southwind 34A provides a double-slide for optimal space when cooking and entertaining on the road.

The L-shaped sofa, mid-ship 40-inch Sony LED TV and cozy fireplace offer all the comforts of home. Centrally located is a large bathroom with plenty of room and storage space while the bedroom includes a king bed plus ample storage and wardrobe space for livability and convenience.

The new Southwind 36L floor plan offers not only a convenient bath-and-a-half, but two slideouts and a popular L-shaped transformer sofa with a hide-away foldout air-bed.

Perfect for entertaining family and friends, the Southwind’s forward slideout houses a roomy dinette with drawer storage and a Euro-recliner with ottoman. A queen bed or optional king bed in the aft slideout offers generous space for a restful sleep.

“At Fleetwood, we have a continued focus on designing unique floor plans that provide our customers with choices and allow them to fully enjoy their adventures on the road,” said Kyle McCrary, senior vice president, product planning and design, at Fleetwood RV.

The latest model changes reflect some of the most substantial updates the company has made in recent years, according to a company news release.

With an ever-present commitment to innovation in design and engineering, American Coach is advancing its 2014 products with all new wood cabinetry stains and finishes that enhance the lavish interior of every motorcoach.

Additionally, all-new exterior graphics and color choices provide customers with even more options when it comes to designing a motorcoach to their own unique tastes.

Specific to the 2014 Revolution is a stunning new dash and cockpit design that features a lighted, solid-surface entry stepwell, power stepwell cover and larger, easy-grab handle to enhance ease and safety (all American Coach brands receive this feature upgrade for 2014).

Also new is a driver-centric cockpit area with a wrap-around dash design.

An exquisitely finished driver footwell area is more automotive-like than anything American Coach has ever designed, with more driver storage for added convenience.

RV/MH Hall of Fame Receives Historic Fleetwood RVs

The RV/MH Hall of Fame Museum recently received a collection of historic Fleetwood RVs from the early days of now defunct Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. of Riverside, California.

John Crean's 1985 working prototype for the iconic Bounder
John Crean’s 1985 working prototype for the iconic Bounder

The coaches were donated by the Crean Foundation, according to a RV/MH Hall of Fame news release.

“Andy Crean, son of Fleetwood founder and Hall of Fame member John Crean, acquired these RVs from the bankruptcy of Fleetwood Enterprises specifically to present to the RV/MH Hall of Fame in his father’s memory,” noted Hall President Darryl Searer,

These RVs, now on display in the museum, include a 1950 12-foot Fleetwood Sporter that was the very first trailer built when Fleetwood grew out of Coach Specialties Company, a builder of venetian blinds for trailers.

Also donated were a Fleetwood Sportster, a later version of the same trailer; a 1969 Pace Arrow that was the first motorhome produced by Fleetwood; and John Crean’s 1985 working prototype for the iconic 1986-87 Bounder which introduced the basement model concept to RVs.

Accompanying the early RVs is an extensive collection of Fleetwood documents and memorabilia from the company’s early days which will be added to RV/MH library collections.

“After learning of the Crean Foundation’s gift, we faced the problem of the costs of transporting the collection from California to the museum in Indiana,” said Searer.

“That problem was solved when Wilbur Bontrager (Jayco, Inc.) and Joel Pladson (Starfleet, an RV transport company) agreed to underwrite the expense and bring the collection to Elkhart.

“This collection of early Fleetwood RVs adds a new dimension to museum’s extensive inventory of historic RVs, thanks to the generosity of the Crean Foundation as well as Wilber Bontrager and Joel Pladson,” he added.

In addition to the Fleetwood collection, the RV/MH museum received a 1947 Westcraft 24-foot Westwood Coronado from its original owner, John Culp, who purchased it in 1947 upon his return from duty with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He used it continuously for 65 years traveling throughout the United States and snowbirding each winter in Florida.

The Westcraft trailer is displayed on the large patio in front of the Hall of Fame building where it is seen by all who pass by.

November RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced six recall notices involving six recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers— Thor Motor Coach, Tiffin Motorhomes, Dutchmen Manufacturing, Airstream, Inc., Fleetwood RV, and Starcraft.

Thor Motor Coach

Elkhart, Indiana-based Thor Motor Coach is recalling 634 model year 2008-2010 motorhomes, manufactured June 1, 2007, through May 1, 2009 and equipped with an Iota ITS-50R Transfer Switch.

The models affected are Four Winds brand models: Chateau, Dutchmen, Hurricane, Windsport, Magellan, Fun Mover, Presidio, and Mandalay. Wiring connections inside the transfer switch are not adequate and, as a result, the switch may overheat.

An overheated switch could cause it to fail and lead to a fire.

Thor Motor Coach will notify owners and replace the Iota Transfer Switch, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact Thor at 1-877-500-1020.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Insufficient shielding between the exhaust pipe and floor may cause possible overheating of the floor above the engine compartment.

If the exhaust pipe in the engine compartment were to fail, the escaping exhaust gases could make the floor area above the engine extremely hot, increasing the risk of personal injury or possibly resulting in a fire.

Tiffin Motorhomes will notify owners, and dealers will install a heat shield, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact Tiffin at 1-256-356-8661.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Goshen, Indiana-based Dutchmen Manufacturing, Inc. is recalling 740 model year 2012-2013 Aspen Trail, Coleman, and Dutchmen recreational vehicles manufactured from October 4, 2011, through October 1, 2012.

These vehicles may have been manufactured without an exterior vent for the furnace.
Without proper exhaust ventilation, the vehicle can fill with carbon monoxide resulting in asphyxiation. The heat build-up may also increase the risk of a fire.

Dutchmen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, install an exterior vent, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact Dutchmen at 1-574-537-0700.

Jackson Center, Ohio-based Airstream, Inc. is recalling 715 model year 2006-2009 Airstream Classic recreational vehicles manufactured between May 2005 and April 2009.

The brake hose may flex near the fitting on the brake assembly and lead to hose fatigue. Also, during suspension travel, the brake hose may rub on the underside of the trailer.

As a result of flexing or rubbing, the brake hose may fail, causing a loss of brake pressure, reducing braking performance. The loss of braking ability could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Airstream will notify owners, and dealers will replace and reroute the brake lines, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in early December 2012.

Owners may contact Airstream at 1-937-538-1268.

Loose electrical wiring connections could cause excessive heat which could lead to fire, injury, or death.

Starcraft will notify owners, and dealers will relocate specific wires in the electrical box to allow the wires to be sufficiently tightened at their connections. The safety recall is expected to begin during November 2012.

September RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced four recall notices involving three recreational vehicle manufacturers— Fleetwood RV, Heartland RV, and Trails West Manufacturing of Idaho—and one manufacturer of RV component parts—Lippert Components.

Fleetwood RV, Inc.

Decatur, Indiana-based Fleetwood RV, Inc. is recalling 74 model year 2013 Excursion motorhomes manufactured from March 27, 2012, through July 24, 2012.

A threaded fastener installed on the turn shaft of the slide-out mechanism may come into contact with a portion of the diesel fuel fill hose while the turn shaft is rotating. If the fastener makes contact with the fuel fill hose, there is a possibility that it will abrade the fuel fill hose and cause a leak.

Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, increases the risk of a fire.

Fleetwood RV will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, shorten the threaded fastener to achieve clearance of the fuel line free of charge. Owners may contact Fleetwood RV owner relations at 1-800-509-3418.

Fleetwood RV’s safety recall number is 120813FRV.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Heartland RV, LLC

Elkhart, Indiana-based Heartland RV, LLC (Heartland) is recalling seven model year 2011-2012 Elkridge and model year 2012-2013 Bighorn Silverado fifth wheel vehicles.

Certain vehicles manufactured with liquid propane (LP) generators may have the LP supply line connected incorrectly to the generator.

If the LP supply line is connected incorrectly, the generator may vent liquid propane into the generator compartment. In the presence of an ignition source, the vented propane can result in an explosion.

Heartland will notify owners and dealers will inspect and correct the LP supply line fitting as necessary, free of charge.

Heartland has not provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Heartland at 1-888-262-5992.

Heartland RV’s safety recall number is 99-01-09.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Trails West Manufacturing of Idaho, Inc.

Preston, Idaho-based Trails West Manufacturing of Idaho, Inc. (Trails West) is recalling 34 model year 2010-2012 recreational horse trailers equipped with Sure Power battery separator devices, due to overheating.

Overheating of the battery separator can result in smoke and possible fire.

Trails West will notify owners, and Sure Power will replace the battery separators free of charge. Trails West has not provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact Trails West Manufacturing of Idaho, Inc. at 1-208-852-2200.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Lippert Components, Inc.

Goshen, Indiana-based Lippert Components, Inc., d.b.a Extreme Trailers, is recalling 143 model year 2011-2012 boat trailers equipped with Carlisle Transport Products brand wheels installed as original equipment.

Lippert also sold approximately 118 wheel and tire assemblies for aftermarket use on various recreational vehicles. These wheels were manufactured with machine dimensions for the application of a center cap and the application of steel lug inserts that were not controlled to the required specifications. As a result, the wheel may not be tightened to the proper torque during the mounting process.

If the wheels are not tightened to the proper torque, the wheels could loosen, leading to wheel separation, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash. A detached wheel also becomes a road hazard.

Lippert will notify owners, and Carlisle Transport Products dealers will repair or replace the affected wheels free of charge.

Lippert has not provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Lippert Components at 1-574-312-6113.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.
