Ford’s RV Training Evaluates RV Refrigerators

Ford’s RV Training & Service has completed the first phase of the side-by-side refrigerator evaluation.

Ford'sRVServicelogoThe report, titled “Evaluation of RV Refrigerators: A side by side independent evaluation of Atwood and Dometic Refrigerators,” has been published on their business website. It details the products tested, test methods, and test results.

The first phase of the evaluation took more than three months to complete as the crew performed more than six different operational environment tests and collected more than 3,600 data points.

“Placing both the Atwood and Dometic refrigerators in adverse situations—even more severe than those called for in the standard—did not greatly affect the refrigerators. Both manufacturers’ models performed better than required, but there were differences,” said Roger Ford, owner of Ford’s RV Training & Service, in a news release.

To learn about the differences and other details of the research, the entire evaluation can be found he RV Training page (see link below).

Along with the extensive RV service they provide, they also offer global certified training in the field of RV refrigerator cooling unit reconditioning.

In 1994, they wrote and published The Ford Procedures, the first and only step-by-step technical manual on RV refrigerator repair and reconditioning; it’s used in conjunction with the training they offer.

There are over a million RV refrigerators in landfills today, and what people don’t know is that over 90 percent of these could have been repaired.

Over the years, their customers have voiced the need for a manual that would enable them to do minor repairs themselves, or at the very least, give them enough education to know whether or not a service tech had been properly educated.

So in 2009, they published the 241-page book, Average Joe’s RV Refrigerator Troubleshooting & Repair Guide. This first of its kind manual, also supports the “Going Green” movement.

The manual contains step-by-step instructions, pictures, charts, myths, and remedies, and much more and covers Dometic, Norcold, Frigking, Morhpy, Richards, Hadco, Coldstar, and many more.

It’s available in paperback or hardback.

From 2003 to 2009, editors from many RV technical magazines engaged the Fords to write articles for their magazines and websites.

Dometic Introduces LED Awning Light Strip

Elkhart, Indiana-based Dometic brings awning light utility and easy installment to an all-time high with its revolutionary new LED awning light strip.

Its placement allows light use in any stage of awning extension and can be applied to existing awning rails just as they are, bringing it light years ahead of previous generations, according to a news release.

Dometic’s unique new design puts the light strip under the rail of the awning against the RV sidewall rather than at the end of the awning arms, where other lights get rolled up with the fabric and can’t be used unless the awning is fully extended.

The 45-degree angle provides even illumination without harsh glare or shadows, eliminating the problem of other systems’ designs that may cast light too far outward from the patio area or shine harsh light into RVers’ eyes.

“Because we put this light strip in a completely new place, RVers have much greater accessibility to pleasant, convenient lighting for their patio space,” explained Dave Schutz, vice president of OEM sales at Dometic.

“This is the only light strip of its kind that isn’t dependent on the awning position, so customers can actually have the lights on with the awning only partially out or even entirely rolled up.”

Convenience for RV manufacturers and dealers was also a consideration during the design process. The light strip’s proprietary extruded mounting system fits in any awning rail without the need to create new holes or grooves. The lead wire can be installed in the same access point as the awning’s wire harness, connecting to 12-volt power and any 12-volt switch.

Dometic Awning Light Channel
Dometic Awning Light Channel

“People will find it unbelievably simple to use this with their existing awning hardware and power. OEMs won’t have to do one thing differently with their product designs,” said Schutz. “This can be incorporated into whatever folks have on the line or on the lot.”

The strip’s bright, cool white 72-watt LED diodes, 60 per meter, generate 4,800 lumens and are rated for 50,000 hours of life, and it’s moisture-resistant for use in any climate or weather conditions.

So far, the previews of Dometic’s new awning light strip have been met with great enthusiasm, according to Schutz.

“We’ve brought people in to show them how it works and how easy it is to slide it into an awning rail. The whole process takes maybe 15 minutes,” he related.

“Immediately they say, ‘When can I get some of these?’ We can’t wait to show it to everyone at Louisville. It’s going to be a hit, there’s no question.”

Dutchmen Infinity Best Choice for Year-Round Camping

A grueling eight-hour test in sub-zero temperatures has proven that Dutchmen Infinity luxury fifth wheels maintain steady, comfortable indoor temperatures of 72.21 degrees Fahrenheit, even in harsh, wintery conditions.

Dutchmen Infinity exterior

The company’s standard “glacial package” makes Infinity the best RV choice for those who enjoy year-round camping, said Michael Dragoo, marketing director.

Infinity, by Dutchmen Manufacturing, Inc., was tested by Dometic, which operates one of the nation’s premiere vehicle climate control facilities, according to a news release.

Sensors were placed in key areas of the coach to measure internal temperatures in the living room, kitchen, bath, bedroom, outside utility center, and outside pass-through storage compartments. The cold chamber’s temperature was then dropped to below 0 degrees.

Dutchmen reported that throughout the eight-hour test, Infinity’s inside temperature of 72.21 degrees remained stable. No waterlines froze and holding tanks maintained an average temperature of 55.5 degrees.

“Infinity performed extremely well compared with its competition,” said Rob Groover, general manager for the company’s Infinity, Komfort, and Dutchmen product lines.

“Infinity’s Glacial Package can maintain a stable temperature because we equip our floors and roofs with R40 insulation and wrap R40 insulation behind the front cap. No one else does that.”

Dutchmen Infinity Front Kitchen Model 3870FK

Groover further noted that the Glacial Package features R24 insulation in slide out floors. “This goes well beyond the industry standard,” he added.

Groover views the test’s success as “proof that we build our coaches for extended use camping.”

The Dutchmen Infinity line of luxury fifth-wheel trailers “Glacial Package” includes:

  • R-Value – roof R-40, floor R-40, walls R-9, slide room floor R-24
  • Enclosed heated and insulated underbelly plus storage area
  • Enclosed and heated tanks
  • Flex foil insulation in roof, underbelly and slide
  • 40,000 BTU Furnace with forced air heat

Infinity high profile luxury fifth wheels lead their class with feature-packed floor plans that include front lounge and front kitchen models. With a focus on spacious living quarters, residential comforts, and unique storage solutions, Infinity is an industry leader in innovation and value, Grover noted.

Ford’s RV Training Center to Evaluate Refrigerators

Ford’s RV Training Center, also the headquarters of the RV Referral Network (RVRN), has invited all RV refrigerator manufacturers to participate in an independent, side-by-side RV refrigerator evaluation.

Atwood Mobile Products LLC and Dometic Corp. will participate in the evaluation and have donated the required refrigerators and cooling units, according to a news release.

“This adventure has been inspired by the many questions RV owners have daily asked all of the members of the RVRN. Therefore, they will be evaluating these refrigerators with RV owners in mind,” said Roger Ford, co-owner with his wife Onna Lee of Ford’s RV Training Center, where the multiple stages of testing are being performed.

Ford said he anticipates the evaluation will have a positive impact for RV owners and the RV industry.

The Fords have 34 years of experience in the field. They have also scheduled the release of a 2012 edition of their third book about RV refrigerators that will be sent complimentary to more than 23,943 RV parks, campgrounds, clubs, dealers, repair centers, and manufacturers throughout the United States and Canada.

Sealy Posturepedic Mattresses Now Available for RVs

Sealy Posturepedic mattresses are going on the road, thanks to an exclusive partnership with Dometic Corp. that will offer Posturepedic recreational vehicle mattresses for the first time, according to a recent news release.

“With more than 60 years of designing and building Posturepedic mattresses with support in mind, we’ve realized that a good night sleep extends past the bedroom,” said Jodi Allen, chief marketing officer at Sealy. “Our new partnership with Dometic will bring quality mattresses to RVers no matter what their travel plans and type of RV while they enjoy the open road.”

“This is a significant addition to our OEM product line. Sealy has the highest mattress brand awareness in the nation,” said Brad Sargent, vice president of marketing at Dometic. “There’s a lot of choice in the market for RV shoppers out there right now, so a Sealy Posturepedic mattress could easily be the deciding factor in making a purchase.”

Founded in 1881, Sealy has been the top mattress brand since 1972 and was in the top ten recognized home product brands in a recent study alongside big names such as Rubbermaid, Tupperware, and La-Z-Boy. Sealy also has the highest customer loyalty and re-purchase rate, with the fastest growing specialty brands for the past three years.

“Widespread poor RV mattress quality has long been a black eye on the industry, and RVers know it and talk about it. Too often you hear about people having to add mattress toppers or worse, replace the original mattresses altogether,” Sargent said. “No matter what an RVer’s travel plans or pace might be, they all need a good night’s sleep in a good bed, so a Sealy Posturepedic has universal appeal that applies to any size or kind of RV.”

Sealy Posturepedic 600 DSx Plush Euro Pillow Top RV mattresses are available in 72×80 king, 60×80 queen, and 60×75 RV-queen sizes. All feature the CoreSupport Center, which reinforces the center third of the mattress where it gets the most wear for enhanced support and resistance of body impressions, providing an extra long product life. Titanium DS (Dual Stage) innersprings, twice as strong as steel, lie just beneath the CoreSupport Center; it’s the only innerspring that gives two levels of support, both at the surface and deep down.

LiftRight Surround handles make it easy to change linens or to reposition the mattress on the StayTight foundation, a rubberized gripper fabric that holds the mattress in place and keeps linens where they belong—a particular boon to RV beds that get jostled during travel. All this is topped by two layers of Hypersoft quilted fabric over a ComfortLayers Plush Euro Pillow Top and covered by a 10-year limited warranty.

“You can’t do any better than the same mattresses that are used in the Presidential beds at the White House,” Sargent said. “And everybody should feel that special when they’re out in their RVs enjoying the open road.”

Sealy

The Sealy mattress story began in 1881 in the small town of Sealy, Texas, when Daniel Haynes, cotton gin builder, filled a request for a cotton-filled mattress. And then another. And then another. His business grew exponentially, which led to more innovations and several patents. Among them, a machine that compressed cotton.

Fifteen years later, Haynes sold his patents to a Texas Company that retained the Sealy name. Soon after, ad exec Earl Edwards penned the slogan “Sleeping on a Sealy is like sleeping on a cloud.” And with that, Sealy mattresses were a national phenomenon.

Today the company owns and operates 25 bedding plants in the U.S. For three decades, Sealy has been number one in market share.

Worth Pondering…
If we agree that the bottom line of life is happiness, not success, then it makes perfect sense to say that it is the journey that counts, not reaching the destination.
