Cummins Introduces New Global Heavy-Duty Engine Platform

Columbus, Indiana-based Cummins Inc. announced a new global heavy-duty engine platform that it has developed to complement its existing global product offering.

Cummins-black-logo-smallThe G Series platform is an in-line six cylinder engine and will be available in 10.5 and 11.8 liter displacements to meet a broad variety of on-highway and off-highway global market requirements and emission standards. Initial engines are designed to run on diesel fuel.

Design and development of the engine was led by a team in the United States and supported by global technical and marketing resources with deep knowledge of local market and customer needs, according to a Cummins news release.

This global design approach utilizes the latest advanced technologies to develop an adaptive architecture, with each engine designed to meet unique performance and cost of ownership expectations for its target market and region.

“The G Series global design approach is a vivid demonstration of how Cummins is transforming from a multinational to a truly global company,” said Steve Chapman, Cummins vice president and group vice president-China and Russia.

“This engine platform has been designed for diverse and global markets by utilizing the expertise and local knowledge of our engineers from around the world.”

The G Series minimizes engineering requirements for vehicle and equipment manufacturers with a common, compact installation envelope. A key design focus for the G Series has been to achieve significant weight savings in order to increase the power-to-weight ratio, said Chapman.

A sculptured block retains high rigidity while removing unnecessary mass. The use of composite material for the oil pan and valve cover provides further weight savings. With this innovative approach, the G Series achieves a remarkably low engine weight of just 1,900 pounds (862 kg) while retaining all the structural strength and durability expected of a Cummins heavy-duty engine, stated Chapman.

cummins-eaton-homepageThe G Series incorporates Cummins Xtra-High Pressure Injection (XPI) fuel system, derived from the larger and more powerful X Series engine. With multiple injection events driven by high-precision Cummins electronic controls, the XPI fuel system contributes to a very impressive peak torque for the G Series of 1,700 lb-ft (2305 N•m), together with a torque rise as high as 60 percent available. These attributes enable the G series to deliver exceptionally fast response to increasing load factors from low engine rpm.

The G series offers fuel efficiency through parasitic reducing technology without variable flow pumps that add unnecessary cost and reduce reliability. Its Single Cam In Head (SCIH) design with roller valve train and high efficiency intake ports continue the design theme of minimum complexity and maximum efficiency. The resulting low weight design allows more payload to be delivered while requiring less energy to manufacture than competitive designs.

For on-highway markets, the G Series heavy duty engine platform will be introduced as the Cummins ISG11 and Cummins ISG12. These engines offer a power range from 290 to 512 horsepower (213 to 382 kW) in a compact and lightweight package. Engines will be available to meet global variations in emissions requirements.

At launch in 2014, engines will meet Euro III, Euro IV, and China NS4 emission requirements. Engines for Euro V, Euro VI, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are also in development. The ISG11 and ISG12 are ideal power solutions for heavy-duty trucks in long-haul, regional haul and vocational service, as well as buses, motor coaches, fire trucks, and recreational vehicles.

One engine from the new G Series platform was initially unveiled at BAUMA in April, 2013, under the name QSM12, and will now be renamed as the QSG12 as part of this family of engines. The QSG12 is purpose-designed to meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and European Union (EU) Stage IV emissions regulations with a more compact envelope and over 30 percent high power-to-weight ratio than the class average for engines with a similar power range. High efficiency air handling and advanced combustion enable the QSG12 to achieve near-zero emissions without the need for a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.

With ratings covering a broad 335 hp to 512 hp (250-382 kW) range, the QSG12 offers an ideal power solution for a wide variety of applications, including tractors, combines, wheel loaders, excavators, cranes and material handling, road building equipment, compressors, screening, and crushing machines.

“Cummins G Series will set a new benchmark as a global heavy-duty engine platform,” said Rich Freeland, Cummins vice president and president, engine business.

“With innovative and leading technology, the G Series will deliver superior performance to drive our customers’ success.”

The G Series will initially be manufactured in Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Company, serving customers on a global basis. Production will start during the first half of 2014.

Cummins Produces Two-millionth Diesel Engine for Ram Trucks

Cummins Inc. has produced its two-millionth diesel engine for Ram Trucks, highlighting the latest milestone in a storied partnership that spans four decades.

But despite its 800 pound-foot peak torque rating, the historic engine—feted at a Cummins plant in Columbus, Indiana—will not see service. Instead, it will go on display, touring the U.S., according to a Chrysler Group news release.

Cummins Onan Announces New Generator Sets

Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Cummins Onan has begun full production of the newly redesigned RV QG 2800 generator sets.

These new models, which replace the KV and KVD product families, meet EPA Phase III standards for small spark-ignited engines, according to a news release.

The new models have a larger, 217 cc engine that produces more horsepower than the previous models. In addition, the RV QG 2800 models offer several new features and improvements:

  • Advanced onboard diagnostics with fault code analysis
  • Easier starting in extreme cold and hot operating conditions
  • Internalized muffler and patented intake system for reduced noise
  • Low-profile exhaust outlet with additional 4-inch ground clearance
  • B+ terminal for easier installation

The 50 Hz models are CE-certified and meet all applicable EU emissions regulations. The 60 Hz models are CSA-certified and meet the latest Tier 3, Phase 3 emissions levels.

Navistar Moving Past Emissions Debacle

Navistar International Corp. won’t apply SCR to its 15-litre MaxxForce engine and will instead lean on Cummins Inc. for its high-horsepower requirements, Jim Hebe, senior vice-president of North American sales operations confirmed during a press briefing.

It’s the first official confirmation that the company won’t pursue its own 15L engine once it uses up its remaining emissions credits and can no longer pay non-conformance penalties for engines that don’t meet EPA2010 emissions standards, Truck News reports.

“Our intention is to continue to build them as long as we can and then phase into the Cummins ISX15,” said Hebe.

“It’s a shame, it’s a great engine.”

Hebe said anticipated demand for the 15-litre MaxxForce would not support the cost of further developing the engine and applying SCR exhaust after treatment to it.

International will focus on its higher volume MaxxForce 13 engine, which will combine selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust after treatment with Navistar’s in-cylinder solution to form what it has dubbed In-Cylinder Technology Plus (ICT+).

Officials indicated Navistar is already building International trucks with Cummins engines—about 300 ProStar+s to date—and that the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two companies will soon become an official supply agreement.

Navistar emerges from emissions struggle

Hebe provided some insight into what went wrong with Navistar’s EGR-only emissions strategy. He still believes pursuing a non-SCR emissions solution was the right call, however he admitted it was a mistake for the company to put all its eggs in one basket.

“Two decisions were made in this company in August 2008,” Hebe said.

“One was to go EGR and the other was to go it alone. The decision to go with EGR was not the wrong decision, but the decision to go it alone was the wrong decision. What really, in the end, created the biggest issue was not EGR, it was that we ran out of time and we ran out of credits. If we had stuck with a partner in the engine business, we would have had more time to develop our in-cylinder solution and probably at the end of the day, we would’ve gotten that. That’s water over the dam now.”

“We’re headed in the right direction, with the right strategy in terms of engines,” Hebe said.

“They’re (dealers) confident in the financial position of the company and these guys are willing to do whatever it takes to help this company be successful.”

When asked by Truck News how the manufacturer will stay cost-competitive, having absorbed the cost of researching, developing and implementing two very costly technologies (advanced-EGR and now SCR), Hebe admitted it will be a concern for Navistar in the near term but emphasized the costs won’t be passed onto customers.

Within about two years, Hebe said, many of the costlier components of the company’s advanced-EGR system can be removed from the equation.

“Theoretically, we should be able to eliminate some of the costs incurred in the engine technology when we go to SCR,” Hebe explained.

“A lot of the stuff that was instrumental in advanced-EGR will go away. For the first year, we’ll be challenged and our customers are not going to bear the cost of that. Our intent is to do what we have to do to keep ourselves competitive in the marketplace until we can eliminate a lot of the expensive componentry required for advanced-EGR.”

Cummins Filtration Releases Revolutionary Fuel Filter

Cummins Filtration, a division of Cummins Inc., has released its revolutionary Fleetguard® FF5782 fuel filter with nanotechnology-based filtration media.

The first of its kind for fuel filtration, the FF5782 was developed specifically to meet the high-performance demands of Cummins QSK high-horsepower engines.

With extensive field-testing over a three-year development cycle, this latest in the Fleetguard fuel product lineup is developed to deliver unmatched protection and superior uptime for customers.

Trapping 98.7 percent of all particles as small as 4 microns (12 times smaller than the smallest particle visible to the human eye), the FF5782 exhibits 13 times greater retention of particles during fuel surge and engine vibration than its closest competitor. Fuel surge results from the fluctuation of fuel flow due to the increase and decrease in the engine output.

Focused on reducing injector failure by removing harmful particles and by delivering fuel that meets Fuel Injection Equipment (FIE) manufacturers’ suggested ISO 12/9/6 cleanliness level, engines equipped with the FF5782 fuel filter showed no signs of injector wear after more than 190 hours of testing.

An engine in identical condition, using standard fuel filters, showed significant wear after only 50 hours, ultimately leading to premature injector failure.

Hard particles in the fuel flow can cause significant wear, disrupting its precise operation, reducing fuel efficiency and leading to premature injector replacement,” said Kevin Westerson, Chief Technical Officer – Cummins Filtration. “Our FF5782 fuel filter with nanotechnology-based media protects up to 13 times better than its predecessor, so injectors work better, longer.”

Because the Fleetguard nanotechnology media filter captures and holds particles better than any other filter in the marketplace, engines fitted with this technology will have fewer injector failures and are expected to offer a 25 percent reduction in the total cost of ownership.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced recall notices involving three recreational vehicle manufacturers— Tiffin Motorhomes, Crossroads RV, and Winnebago Industries.

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc

Red Bay, Alabama-based Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. is potentially recalling 13 certain Model Year 2011, 2012, and 2013 recreational vehicles, models Phaeton and Zephyr, equipped with a Cummins ISB, ISC, ISL, or ISX diesel engine.

The V-band clamp assembly, part numbers q187684, q187685, and q187686, used to connect the inlet and outlet cone sections to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)/diesel particulate filter (DPF) include a T-bolt that can fracture and fail when subjected to stress or load.

A fracture or failure of the T-bolt may cause the clamp to loosen and the inlet or outlet sections attached to the DOC/DPF housing to disconnect. If the inlet or outlet sections disconnect, hot exhaust gases can vent prior to exiting the tailpipe, creating the risk of combustion and a fire. If both clamps fail, there is a risk in some applications that the DOC/DPF housing may detach completely, creating a road hazard.

Tiffin is working with Cummins to identify and notify owners of the recall campaign. Repairs will be performed by authorized Cummins dealers free of charge.

Topeka, Indiana-based Crossroads RV is recalling six certain Model Year 2012 Redwood recreational vehicles manufactured from August 26, 2011, through January  18, 2012, equipped with a hydraulic trailer brake pump. The hydraulic pump could fail and result in a loss of braking in the trailer.

A loss of braking can lead to loss of control of the trailer increasing the risk of a crash, serious injuries, or property damage.

Crossroads will notify owners, and dealers will replace the hydraulic pumps free of charge.

Forest City, Iowa-based Winnebago Industries, Inc. is potentially recalling 38 certain Model Year 2012 Access, Access Premier and Itasca Impulse and Impulse Silver motorhomes, manufactured from June 28, 2011, through January 25, 2012. The parking brake cable may rub on a metal support under the vehicle.

If the parking brake cable rubs, it may fail to release, or over time it may abrade until it to fails, resulting in the vehicle rolling away without prior warning possibly causing personal injury or death.

Winnebago will notify owners, and dealers will shorten the metal tube to provide clearance for the parking brake cable, free of charge.

The safety recall is expected to begin during March 2012.

1. RV Towed in Possible Texas Terror Plot

Bexar County Sheriff’s officials towed away a rented Class C motorhome that was parked in front of Bexar County Courthouse in downtown San Antonio, Texas early Wednesday (October 19) morning, Reuters reported.

Five French-passport carrying Muslim men of Moroccan descent were arrested during a courthouse burglary during the early hours Wednesday. Police told Reuters they found photographs of public buildings, water systems, and malls from various U.S. cities in the motorhome. The Coachmen motorhome appears to belong to Road Bear RV Rentals.

2. Monaco RV Indiana Service Center Now Open

Coburg, Oregon-based Monaco RV, LLC, a manufacturer of motorized and towable recreation vehicles, announced the opening of an Indiana service center.

The Monaco Service Center, located across the street from its Wakarusa manufacturing facility, opened for business October 3 at 76 Ward Street in Wakarusa. The expansive 14-bay service center facility will service all Monaco brand products and is staffed by RVIA certified factory technicians. The Monaco Service Center will also have an accessible full body paint booth, for all paint repairs and touch up work.

To coincide with its grand opening and welcome back customers, the Monaco Service Center will offer a special introductory labor rate of $90 until April 1, 2012.

3. Texas Citrus Output Could Fall

Texas citrus growers in the Rio Grande Valley have been jolted by a one-two punch of drought and untimely freezes but are still standing as the harvest gets going.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimated that Texas orange and grapefruit production could decline by 17 percent from last year to about 277,000 tons.

With Florida, the nation’s citrus powerhouse, expecting orange and grapefruit production to increase by more than 4 percent, prices may not change much despite Texas’ problems.

But with the drought making the fruit sweeter than normal, producers hope consumers will stomach the price and keep eating citrus, reports Houston Chronicle.

The drought has not been as extreme across the Valley as other parts of Texas, but it has had an effect on citrus development, especially fruit size, growers said.

The newest USDA estimate says Texas will produce 73,000 tons of oranges in the 2011-2012 production year, 10,000 fewer tons than last year. Texas grapefruit production is expected to dip to 204,000 tons from 252,000 tons last year.

Harvests have just started in Texas and Florida, which is expected to grow 6.6 million tons of oranges and 854,000 tons of grapefruit this year.

4. Carriage RV Shuts Its Doors Temporarily

Millersburg, Indiana-based Carriage RV has shut down, WSBT-TV reported Wednesday (October 19). The doors and gates at its facility were locked in the morning.

WSBT talked to two truckers who came to make deliveries. They say they were told by their companies it was closed. WSBT also talked to several RV owners who had stopped by the plant for maintenance work. They were advised that there would be no charges for that service work because the company was closing and there would be no work done until further notice.

In breaking news PNC Bank of Indianapolis has filed a lawsuit to take possession of Carriage Inc, which the bank says owes it more than $5 million in overdue loans, the Goshen News reported.

Rumors of Carriage’s financial woes have been circulating through town for the past two weeks, the paper noted, when company officials first made the call to start closing down its buildings and sending workers home.

The suit was filed Tuesday (October 18) in Elkhart County Superior Court I. It claims Carriage Inc. owner Glenn Cushman has been in default of his financial obligations to PNC Bank from as far back as Sept. 21, 2009, The Goshen News reported, noting that several loan extensions were required to keep the loans from defaulting.

5. Cummins Complete Technical Center in China

Cummins Inc. announced Wednesday (October 19) that it has completed the Cummins East Asia Technical Center in Wuhan, Hubei province, making it the firm’s largest engine development and research facility outside Columbus, Indiana.

China Daily reports that Cummins Chairman and Chief Executive Tim Solso said the expansion aims to help Cummins, the largest foreign investor in the Chinese diesel engine industry, better tailor its products to the world’s biggest automobile market. The technical center cost $61 million, with the expansion project worth $33 million, the company said.

A series of emission-testing facilities will be put into use next year, in a move to help Chinese-made engines break into markets in Europe, Russia, Republic of Korea, Australia, and Brazil.

The center will also develop clean energy technology, including electric motors and automobile cells. It employs more than 100 technicians and plans to increase the number to 1,400 in the next two years.

Launched in 2006, the center is a 55-45 joint venture between Cummins and Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co (DCEC), which itself is the Indiana-headquartered firm’s venture with China’s leading automaker Dongfeng Motor.

China is Cummins’ largest and fastest-growing market overseas, with its sales in the country at $3.1 billion last year.

RV Manufactures Recalls

Four manufacturers—Tiffin Motorhomes, Open Range, American Trailer Company, and Techworks Inc.—have recently announced recalls.

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc.

Red Bay, Alabama-based Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. is recalling 179 model year 2011 Allegro Bus and Phaeton RVs quipped with a Cummins ISX or ISL diesel engine. The V-band clamp assembly (part numbers Q187684, Q187685, and Q187686) used to connect the inlet and outlet cone sections to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)/Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) include a T-bolt which can fracture and fail when subjected to stress or load. A fracture or failure of the T-bolt may cause the clamp to loosen and the inlet or outlet sections attached to the DOC/DPF housing to disconnect.

If the inlet or outlet sections disconnect, hot exhaust gases can vent prior to exiting the tailpipe, creating the risk of combustion and a fire. If both clamps fail, there is a risk in some applications that the DOC/DPF housing may detach completely, creating a road hazard.

Tiffin Motorhomes is working with Cummins to identify and notify owners of the recall campaign. Repairs will be performed by authorized Cummins dealers free of charge. Owners may contact Cummins at 1-812-377-5000 or Tiffin Motorhomes at 1-256-356-8661.

Open Range RV

Shipshewana, Indiana-based Open Range RV Company is recalling 207 model year 2010-2011 Journeyer RVs manufactured from August 27, 2009 through November 17, 2010. A main supporting cross member was cut out to run a liquid propane line. This can cause stress cracks on the I-beams on both sides of the trailer.

While being towed, the trailer could begin a dangerous sway, ultimately rolling over, increasing the risk of personal injury or death.

Open Range will notify owners and inspect the frame for any missing cross supports and perform the necessary repairs free of charge. Owners may contact Open Range at 1-260-768-7771.

Aluminum Trailer Company (ATC)

American Trailer Company (ATC) is recalling 145 model year 2007-2012 ATC Car Hauler Trailers with extended hitches, manufactured from December 1, 2006 through September 16, 2011. These trailers with 12 inch extended hitch frames are breaking near the front cross member on the frame of the trailer. This is caused by insufficient material used in the frame hitch.

The hitch could potentially break, causing separation from the towing vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of loss of control and posing a risk of personal injury and property damage.

ATC will repair the aluminum trailer hitch free of charge. Owners may contact ATC at 1-877-441-2440.

Techworks Inc.

Techworks Inc. is recalling one model year 2000 Overland Ospry RV quipped with a 1200-series Norcold refrigerator. The population of refrigerators being addressed contains either a sensing algorithm or thermal switch to shut off power to the refrigerator when high temperatures are detected in order to prevent a potential fire. The response times of the sensor algorithm and thermal switch devices to stop power are not sufficient.

An insufficient response time can result in power not being shut off in sufficient time to prevent a fire, which has the potential to ignite, resulting in personal injury and/or vehicle and property damage.
