CrossRoads RV Adds Fifth Wheels to Cruiser Aire Line

Topeka, Indiana-based CrossRoads RV has added fifth-wheel models to its popular Cruiser Aire line, marking the first time CrossRoads has offered an ultra-lightweight fifth wheel.

The Cruiser Aire fifth wheel is currently available in three floor plans with two additional configurations planned, according to a company news release.

Weighing in at less than 7,000 pounds the Cruiser Aire line is designed for use with a half-ton truck.

Amenities in the fifth wheels include dual slides that expand the interior space while the kitchen features an island and 8-cubic-foot refrigerator.

Cruiser travel trailers and fifth wheels are engineered for easy towing. Their six-sided aluminum framing provides a lightweight super structure and reduces the weight to provide more towing options.

June RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced four recall notices involving three recreational vehicle manufacturers—Crossroads RV, Forest River, and Tiffin Motorhomes RV.

Crossroads RV

Topeka, Indiana-based Crossroads RV is recalling 77 model year 2011 Crossroads Cruiser recreational trailers, manufactured from August 5, 2010 through December 15, 2010.

These vehicles were manufactured with incorrect information on the federal identification tag, tire, and loading information label and the recreational vehicle cargo carrying capacity label.

Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120, “Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicle Other Than Passenger Cars.”

An inaccurate label could lead to improper vehicle loading specifications which could lead to a tire failure which may result in personal injury or property damage.

Crossroads will notify owners and provide corrected labels. Owners may contact Thor Industries at 1-937-596-7965 or Crossroads at 1-260-593-2866.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Forest River Inc.

Elkhart, Indiana-based Forest River, Inc. is recalling 447 model year 2012 and 2013 Surveyor travel trailers, manufactured from August 12, 2011 through April 6, 2012.

On certain floor plans, the liquid propane (LP) gas line was routed and fastened along the bottom of the frame rail. When the trailer hits a bump, the positioning of the LP gas line may allow the “U” bolt on the axle to pinch the line between the main rail and the “U” bolt.

As a result, the line may break and leak LP gas, which may cause a fire, injury, or death.
Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will re-route the LP line, free of charge. Owners may contact Forest River at 1-574-389-4600.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Forest River Inc.

Elkhart, Indiana-based Forest River, Inc. is recalling 57 model year 2010-2011 Stealth recreational trailers.

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Cargo Carrying Capacity Specification is incorrect on the Federal Certification Label and the Tire Information Label. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Part 567, “Certification.”

Incorrect weight information may lead to overloading, which may cause axle or tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will remove and replace the labels with corrected labels.

Owners should contact Forest River at 1-909-873-3777.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc.

Red Bay, Alabama-based Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. is recalling two model year 2012 Phaeton RVs built on a Spartan chassis and equipped with 3030 brake chambers.

These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, “Air Brake Systems,” because they do not meet the park brake and draw bar requirements.

The park brake may not be sufficient to hold the vehicle in place. Accordingly, the vehicle could roll away and strike and injure a bystander or cause a crash without warning.

The affected vehicles have not been sold yet and Tiffin has notified the dealers that are in possession of the vehicles. Spartan dealers will install improved brake chambers prior to sale.

Owners may contact Tiffin Motorhomes at 1-256-356-8661.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

May RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced recall notices involving five recreational vehicle manufacturers—Jayco, Airstream, Crossroads RV, Forest River, and Tiffin Motorhomes.

Jayco, Inc.

Middlebury, Indiana-based Jayco, Inc. is recalling 66 model year 2012 Jay Flight Bungalow travel trailers, manufactured from March 19, 2012 through March 27, 2012.

The load range and the cold tire inflation pressure on these trailers are incorrectly identified. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120, “Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles Other than Passenger Cars.”

Relying on the misprinted label could lead to improper vehicle loading specifications or tire inflation, which could result in a tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Jayco, Inc. will notify owners, and dealers will remove and replace the labels with a correct label. Owners should contact Jayco at 1-574-825-0608.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Airstream, Inc.

Jackson Center, Ohio-based Airstream, Inc. is recalling 12 model year 2012-2013 International Eddie Bauer travel trailers.

The Part 567 Certification Labels on the vehicles contain incorrect tire and rim size information. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, “Tire Selection and Rims.”

Incorrect tire and tire pressure information on the label could lead to the installation of a tire with the wrong load rating and insufficient tire pressure. These conditions could result in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Airstream will mail to consumers the corrected label and provide instructions on how to install the label.

Owners should contact Thor at 1-937-596-6849 or Airstream at 1-937-538-1268.
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Crossroads RV

Topeka, Indiana-based Crossroads RV is recalling 24 model year 2012 Elevation RVs manufactured from November 7, 2011 through February 22, 2012.

The onboard, auxiliary fuel storage tank is installed too high, which does not permit the tank to be filled properly. As a result, fuel may come back out of the fuel filler neck and spill.

In the presence of an ignition source, this could cause a fire or an explosion, which may result in personal injury or death.

Crossroads will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank mounting brackets free of charge.

Owners may contact Thor at 1-937-596-6849 or Crossroads at 1-260-593-2866.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Forest River Inc.

Elkhart, Indiana-based Forest River, Inc. is recalling 1,468 model year 2010-2012 Georgetown RVs built on a Ford stripped chassis, manufactured from February 15, 2010 through November 29, 2011.

The gear shifter’s cable may break at the attachment to the transmission control selector arm assembly mounted on the steering column. If the cable breaks, the transmission gear indicator in the gear display in the instrument panel will remain in the first gear position regardless of the gear selected.

An incorrect gear indication in the instrument panel increases the risk that a vehicle is left in gear, such that the vehicle could roll, leading to a crash or injury to a bystander.

Forest River will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transmission selector arm assembly and the cable assembly, free of charge.

Forest Rivers has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Owners may contact Forest River at 1-574-295-8749.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc.

Red Bay, Alabama-based Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. is recalling 1,250 model year 2010 through 2012 Allegro motorhomes built on Ford F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis.

The gear shift cable may break at the attachment to the transmission control selector arm assembly mounted on the steering column. If the cable breaks, the transmission gear indicator in the gear shift display in the instrument panel will remain in the first gear regardless of the gear selected.

An incorrect gear indication in the instrument panel may prevent the driver from knowing if they are in park or reverse, increasing the risk of a crash.

Tiffin is working with Ford to identify and notify owners of the affected motorhomes. Ford will replace the transmission selector arm assembly and the gear shift cable assembly, free of charge. Owners may contact Tiffin at 1-256-356-8661 or Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

More February RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced recall notices involving three recreational vehicle manufacturers— Tiffin Motorhomes, Crossroads RV, and Winnebago Industries.

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc

Red Bay, Alabama-based Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. is potentially recalling 13 certain Model Year 2011, 2012, and 2013 recreational vehicles, models Phaeton and Zephyr, equipped with a Cummins ISB, ISC, ISL, or ISX diesel engine.

The V-band clamp assembly, part numbers q187684, q187685, and q187686, used to connect the inlet and outlet cone sections to the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC)/diesel particulate filter (DPF) include a T-bolt that can fracture and fail when subjected to stress or load.

A fracture or failure of the T-bolt may cause the clamp to loosen and the inlet or outlet sections attached to the DOC/DPF housing to disconnect. If the inlet or outlet sections disconnect, hot exhaust gases can vent prior to exiting the tailpipe, creating the risk of combustion and a fire. If both clamps fail, there is a risk in some applications that the DOC/DPF housing may detach completely, creating a road hazard.

Tiffin is working with Cummins to identify and notify owners of the recall campaign. Repairs will be performed by authorized Cummins dealers free of charge.

Owners may contact Cummins at 1-812-377-5000 or Tiffin at 1-256-356-8661.

Cummins recall campaign number is c1154.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Crossroads RV, Inc.

Topeka, Indiana-based Crossroads RV is recalling six certain Model Year 2012 Redwood recreational vehicles manufactured from August 26, 2011, through January  18, 2012, equipped with a hydraulic trailer brake pump. The hydraulic pump could fail and result in a loss of braking in the trailer.

A loss of braking can lead to loss of control of the trailer increasing the risk of a crash, serious injuries, or property damage.

Crossroads will notify owners, and dealers will replace the hydraulic pumps free of charge.

Owners may contact Crossroads RV at 1-888-226-7496.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

The parking brake cable may rub on a metal support under the vehicle.

If the parking brake cable rubs, it may fail to release, or over time it may abrade until it to fails, resulting in the vehicle rolling away without prior warning possibly causing personal injury or death.

Winnebago will notify owners, and dealers will shorten the metal tube to provide clearance for the parking brake cable, free of charge.

The safety recall is expected to begin during March 2012.

Owners may contact Winnebago Industries owner relations at 1-641-585-6939.

Winnebago’s safety recall number is 125.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Redwood RV Purchases Carriage Name

Syracuse, Indiana-based Redwood Residential Vehicles has purchased the brand names, trademarks, and intellectual property of former Millersburg RV manufacturer Carriage Inc. yesterday (February 22) at an auction from Ross, Ohio-based Myron Bowling Auctioneers.

Redwood RV is a division of CrossRoads RV based in Topeka, Indiana.

Don Emahiser, President of Redwood and CrossRoads says the company has also hired several former Carriage employees, according to an Inside Indiana Business news release.

Carriage, a luxury fifth-wheel manufacturer, had been headquartered in Millersburg, Indiana since 1968 and built fifth wheels under the Cabo, Cameo, Carri-Lite, and Royals International brands.

Carriage was ordered into liquidation following protracted discussions between company executives and its lenders, primarily PNC Bank out of Indianapolis. Ultimately, PNC filed suit October 18 to take possession of Carriage, which reportedly owed the bank more than $5 million.

More than 700 bidders had reportedly registered for the court-ordered liquidation of Carriage assets.

“It’s a historic brand, it’s been around for more than 40 years, and we think there’s a place for historical brands in this industry,” said Emahiser. “And we think we’re a company that’s up to the challenge of continuing its legacy.”

“We are excited about this purchase,” added Emahiser. “We’ve hired key Carriage talent—from production, to purchasing, IT, and sales. I doubt that any other manufacturer has attracted more. They have been placed throughout our organization, from senior management to entry-level positions.”

The management team at Redwood and CrossRoads believes the acquisition of not only the Carriage name but also the hiring of many of its previous employees will make the companies uniquely positioned to be the best stewards of the Carriage legacy, Inside Indiana Business reports.

“We strongly feel that the RV Industry needs its historic brands, so we look forward to bringing this iconic name back to the marketplace,” said Emahiser.

Details of the acquisition and specific plans for the Carriage name and brands will be disclosed in the near future according to a company spokesperson.

Five Things You Need to Know Today: February 3

Since I like things to come in fives (and tens), here are five things YOU need to know TODAY!

1. Rollin’ Down the (Mississippi) River

Don't let this happen to you!

A motorhome—valued at approximately $250,000—was suddenly converted into a submarine early Sunday (January 29) after it accidentally rolled into the Mississippi River from Silver Street in Natchez.

The owner of the Rexhall motorhome, James Gilmore, told police he had the 38-foot vehicle parked near the Under-the-Hill Saloon, the Natchez Democrat reported.

Gilmore was preparing to leave when he stepped out of the vehicle to close a door and the motorhome started to roll. He tried to jump back into the vehicle to stop it, but it was moving too quickly and he had to jump away, the report said.

The RVe rolled into the river, and the report states that the responding officer could see it floating down the river but lost sight of it once it passed the Mississippi River Bridge.

2. West Virginia 2012 Travel Guide Available

3. Texas City Stops New RV Park Construction

Beeville City Council voted January 24 to stop construction on recreational vehicle parks until legal questions have been answered regarding a current city ordinance on such facilities.

The South Texas city has seen at least 14 new RV parks spring up in the past year as workers come here to work in oil and gas exploration, mysoutex.com reported.

Complaints from three city residents about RV parks being built within the city limits prompted the council to call for a halt to the construction until the city ordinance can be researched to determine if the parks going in are legal or if they violate the ordinance.

4. Coach-Net extends special rate to Airstream owners

National Motor Club (NMC) and Airstream, Inc. announced a partnership agreement that will provide Coach-Net RV technical and roadside assistance to be included in the Airstream 2012 models.

The agreement also provides owners of earlier Airstream models the ability to purchase a membership at an Airstream negotiated rate. Legacy Airstream owners will be notified within the week of this special, limited time offer.

Coach-Net’s 24/7 availability expands Airstream’s service and provides factory-trained reps to assist Airstream owners wherever they travel throughout the United States and Canada.

“We believe the addition of Coach-Net is a great way to round out our service offering and add support to our valued owners,” said Justin Humphreys, Airstream’s vice president of sales. “Whether they are on the side of the road, in a campground, or just have a technical question after hours, we want to give our owners peace of mind knowing that they have a respected, knowledgeable RV industry leader available to help.”

Topeka, Indiana-based CrossRoads RV has completed its extreme water testing of the new Sunset Trail B.O.S.S. (Bi-lateral Operating Slideout System) front cap slide out. CrossRoads enlisted the help of the local fire department to simulate heavy rain conditions.

“They used 12,000 gallons of water in the testing, which is equal to 300 inches of rain. The B.O.S.S. front cap slide out was water tight in both the closed and extended positions,” said Director of Marketing Dave Boggs.

When I was very young and the urge to be someplace was on me, I was assured by mature people that maturity would cure this itch. When years described me as mature, the remedy prescribed was middle age. In middle age I was assured that greater age would calm my fever and now that I am fifty-eight perhaps senility will do the job. Nothing has worked… In other words, I don’t improve, in further words, once a bum always a bum. I fear the disease is incurable.

Worth Pondering…
Make your choice, adventurous stranger.
Strike the bell and bide the danger.
Or wonder ’til it drives you mad,
What would have followed, if you had.
