CrossRoads and sister company Redwood RV acquired the Carriage and Cameo brands during a February 21 court-ordered liquidation of Carriage Inc.’s assets.

Carriage, a longtime luxury fifth-wheel builder based in Millersburg, Indiana, was forced to close its doors in late 2011 as a result of the recession.

The Cameo brand will target both weekend travelers and extended-stay snowbirds with a lineup that will offer a range of floor plans in a variety of lengths, according to a company news release.

CrossRoads said the Carriage brand will provide high-end, residential style of living as each floor plan has been carefully designed and specifically created to ensure a permanent way of living anywhere you choose.

The upscale brand will feature master suites, full-body paint exteriors, and a full two-year residential warranty.

“The team here at CrossRoads RV is extremely excited to offer these two iconic names back to the marketplace,” stated Product Manager Rudy Boals.

“We are confident that both past and new customers will appreciate the quality, craftsmanship, and design of these fifth wheels.”

Several floor plans of the Carriage and Cameo will be on display at the Elkhart County RV Open House, September 16-18.

LIFESTYLE Partners with Carriage Travel Club

Middlebury, Indiana-based LIFESTYLE Luxury RV, a division of EverGreen RV LLC, announced it has entered into a formal partnership with the Carriage Travel Club Inc. (CTC).

According to a news release, CTC is an independent owners’ club separate from former high-end fifth-wheel manufacturer Carriage Inc., and maintains an active, enthusiastic base of fifth-wheel owners.

The group had been seeking a new fifth-wheel maker to partner with, and selected LIFESTYLE after a thorough, deliberate search and review process.

In aligning with LIFESTYLE Luxury RV, the CTC and its members will support LIFESTYLE at several future industry and retail shows. In addition, LIFESTYLE will support the CTC and its members at its rallies and events, including its three national rallies it holds each year, including its Florida National rally and Texas National rally, both held in early spring, and the Grand National Rally, traditionally held in the Midwest in late summer or early fall.

“After we had the opportunity to tour the LIFESTYLE Luxury RV facility and see the models in production, I had no doubt that this was the best engineered and designed fifth-wheel unit on the market, and that’s why I had no doubt that LIFESTYLE was the most logical partner for CTC,” Bucky Moree, president of the CTC, explained.

“It’s clear LIFESTYLE has the entire DNA of what our members expect and want. LIFESTYLE has demonstrated to our membership that they care about what owners want, going so far as to implement certain ideas and recommended changes.”

“We are very excited about this relationship with the CTC and its wonderful membership,” said Greg Kitson, director of engineering and product development for LIFESTYLE Luxury RV.

“For over 35 years, the CTC has provided its members a supportive, engaging, energetic forum in which they can gather and share their common interests and celebrate their love of luxury fifth-wheel living. We are honored that, after their exhaustive search, they chose LIFESTYLE as their new fifth-wheel representative. It’s a relationship we take seriously and a partnership we look forward to developing and building for years to come.”

The Carriage Travel Club was founded in 1976 by a small group of Carriage fifth-wheel owners with the goal of promoting “good fellowship and camaraderie for owners of Carriage trailer products.”

In addition to the national chapter, there are more than 20 local CTC chapters located throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Redwood RV Purchases Carriage Name

Syracuse, Indiana-based Redwood Residential Vehicles has purchased the brand names, trademarks, and intellectual property of former Millersburg RV manufacturer Carriage Inc. yesterday (February 22) at an auction from Ross, Ohio-based Myron Bowling Auctioneers.

Redwood RV is a division of CrossRoads RV based in Topeka, Indiana.

Don Emahiser, President of Redwood and CrossRoads says the company has also hired several former Carriage employees, according to an Inside Indiana Business news release.

Carriage, a luxury fifth-wheel manufacturer, had been headquartered in Millersburg, Indiana since 1968 and built fifth wheels under the Cabo, Cameo, Carri-Lite, and Royals International brands.

Carriage was ordered into liquidation following protracted discussions between company executives and its lenders, primarily PNC Bank out of Indianapolis. Ultimately, PNC filed suit October 18 to take possession of Carriage, which reportedly owed the bank more than $5 million.

More than 700 bidders had reportedly registered for the court-ordered liquidation of Carriage assets.

“It’s a historic brand, it’s been around for more than 40 years, and we think there’s a place for historical brands in this industry,” said Emahiser. “And we think we’re a company that’s up to the challenge of continuing its legacy.”

“We are excited about this purchase,” added Emahiser. “We’ve hired key Carriage talent—from production, to purchasing, IT, and sales. I doubt that any other manufacturer has attracted more. They have been placed throughout our organization, from senior management to entry-level positions.”

The management team at Redwood and CrossRoads believes the acquisition of not only the Carriage name but also the hiring of many of its previous employees will make the companies uniquely positioned to be the best stewards of the Carriage legacy, Inside Indiana Business reports.

“We strongly feel that the RV Industry needs its historic brands, so we look forward to bringing this iconic name back to the marketplace,” said Emahiser.

Details of the acquisition and specific plans for the Carriage name and brands will be disclosed in the near future according to a company spokesperson.

Five Things You Need to Know Today: October 21

Since I like things to come in fives (and tens), here are five things YOU need to know TODAY!

1. RV Towed in Possible Texas Terror Plot

Bexar County Sheriff's officials towed away a rented Coachman Class C motorhome that was parked in front of Bexar County Courthouse in downtown San Antonio. (Credit: Reuters)

Bexar County Sheriff’s officials towed away a rented Class C motorhome that was parked in front of Bexar County Courthouse in downtown San Antonio, Texas early Wednesday (October 19) morning, Reuters reported.

Five French-passport carrying Muslim men of Moroccan descent were arrested during a courthouse burglary during the early hours Wednesday. Police told Reuters they found photographs of public buildings, water systems, and malls from various U.S. cities in the motorhome. The Coachmen motorhome appears to belong to Road Bear RV Rentals.

2. Monaco RV Indiana Service Center Now Open

Coburg, Oregon-based Monaco RV, LLC, a manufacturer of motorized and towable recreation vehicles, announced the opening of an Indiana service center.

The Monaco Service Center, located across the street from its Wakarusa manufacturing facility, opened for business October 3 at 76 Ward Street in Wakarusa. The expansive 14-bay service center facility will service all Monaco brand products and is staffed by RVIA certified factory technicians. The Monaco Service Center will also have an accessible full body paint booth, for all paint repairs and touch up work.

To coincide with its grand opening and welcome back customers, the Monaco Service Center will offer a special introductory labor rate of $90 until April 1, 2012.

The Monaco Service Center will be Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling (877) 4MONACO (466.6226)

3. Texas Citrus Output Could Fall

Texas citrus growers in the Rio Grande Valley have been jolted by a one-two punch of drought and untimely freezes but are still standing as the harvest gets going.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimated that Texas orange and grapefruit production could decline by 17 percent from last year to about 277,000 tons.

With Florida, the nation’s citrus powerhouse, expecting orange and grapefruit production to increase by more than 4 percent, prices may not change much despite Texas’ problems.

But with the drought making the fruit sweeter than normal, producers hope consumers will stomach the price and keep eating citrus, reports Houston Chronicle.

The drought has not been as extreme across the Valley as other parts of Texas, but it has had an effect on citrus development, especially fruit size, growers said.

The newest USDA estimate says Texas will produce 73,000 tons of oranges in the 2011-2012 production year, 10,000 fewer tons than last year. Texas grapefruit production is expected to dip to 204,000 tons from 252,000 tons last year.

Harvests have just started in Texas and Florida, which is expected to grow 6.6 million tons of oranges and 854,000 tons of grapefruit this year.

4. Carriage RV Shuts Its Doors Temporarily

Millersburg, Indiana-based Carriage RV has shut down, WSBT-TV reported Wednesday (October 19). The doors and gates at its facility were locked in the morning.

WSBT talked to two truckers who came to make deliveries. They say they were told by their companies it was closed. WSBT also talked to several RV owners who had stopped by the plant for maintenance work. They were advised that there would be no charges for that service work because the company was closing and there would be no work done until further notice.

In breaking news PNC Bank of Indianapolis has filed a lawsuit to take possession of Carriage Inc, which the bank says owes it more than $5 million in overdue loans, the Goshen News reported.

Rumors of Carriage’s financial woes have been circulating through town for the past two weeks, the paper noted, when company officials first made the call to start closing down its buildings and sending workers home.

The suit was filed Tuesday (October 18) in Elkhart County Superior Court I. It claims Carriage Inc. owner Glenn Cushman has been in default of his financial obligations to PNC Bank from as far back as Sept. 21, 2009, The Goshen News reported, noting that several loan extensions were required to keep the loans from defaulting.

5. Cummins Complete Technical Center in China

Cummins Inc. announced Wednesday (October 19) that it has completed the Cummins East Asia Technical Center in Wuhan, Hubei province, making it the firm’s largest engine development and research facility outside Columbus, Indiana.

China Daily reports that Cummins Chairman and Chief Executive Tim Solso said the expansion aims to help Cummins, the largest foreign investor in the Chinese diesel engine industry, better tailor its products to the world’s biggest automobile market. The technical center cost $61 million, with the expansion project worth $33 million, the company said.

A series of emission-testing facilities will be put into use next year, in a move to help Chinese-made engines break into markets in Europe, Russia, Republic of Korea, Australia, and Brazil.

The center will also develop clean energy technology, including electric motors and automobile cells. It employs more than 100 technicians and plans to increase the number to 1,400 in the next two years.

Launched in 2006, the center is a 55-45 joint venture between Cummins and Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co (DCEC), which itself is the Indiana-headquartered firm’s venture with China’s leading automaker Dongfeng Motor.

China is Cummins’ largest and fastest-growing market overseas, with its sales in the country at $3.1 billion last year.

Have a great weekend.

Until next time, safe RV travels, and we’ll see you on the road!

RV Manufacturers Recall

Three recreational vehicle manufacturers—Tiffin, Jayco, and Carriage—have recently announced recalls.

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc.

Red Bay, Alabama-based Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Phaeton motorhomes with floorplans QBH, QKH, and QTH that are built with 2010 EPA-certified engines on Powerglide chassis. The exhaust pipe is mounted too close to the underside of the floor. Melting of the insulation can occur, possibly resulting in a fire.

Tiffin will notify owners, and dealers will attach a heat shield to the bottom of the floor and an insulating sock or blanket will be wrapped around the exhaust pipe. These repairs will be performed free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin during September. Owners may contact Tiffin at 1-256-356-8661

Jayco, Inc.

Middlebury, Indiana-based Jayco, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2011 Seneca Class C motorhomes, series 36FK and 37FS, manufactured from May 18 through July 13 this year. These vehicles may have insufficiently torqued bolts attaching the trailer hitch to the motorhome frame. Loose hitch bolts could result in the hitch separating from the frame, creating a road hazard increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect and tighten up the hitch bolts free of charge.

The safety recall is expected to begin during September. Owners may contact Jayco at 1-800-283-8267.

Carriage, Inc.
Millersburg, Indiana-based Carriage, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Cameo and Carri-Lite, model year 2010-2011 Royals, and model year 2009 Domani fifth wheel trailers with generator transfer switches. The generator transfer switch may not be manufactured or installed to the proper specification causing a potential for excessive heat buildup inside the switch. If enough heat builds up inside the switch, the switch could melt and catch fire. Dealers will inspect the generator transfer switches and replace them as necessary, free of charge.

The safety recall is expected to begin during September. Owners may contact Carriage at 1-574-642-3622.
