Winegard Company will showcase the Rayzar at the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) National RV Trade Show at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky, December 2-4.

The Rayzar Automatic, Winegard’s next generation in digital and HD broadcast TV antennas, is a fully automatic HD TV antenna that quickly scans for all available local broadcast channels, according to a company news release.

This antenna is for RV enthusiasts who want to enjoy programming as well as local news and weather.

This fully automatic enhanced dual band antenna features state-of-the-art technology to provide the most user friendly and comprehensive free HDTV viewing experience on the market.

No manual aiming or cranking. Fully automatic, simple operation. Manual tuning over-ride option also available to reposition antenna when looking for a specific channel broadcast from an alternate location that was not found during initial search

The Rayzar Automatic external hardware searches for live, local signals, while an LED wall plate inside the RV illuminates all locations where TV signals are available. The antenna positions itself automatically to ensure maximum channel availability. However, there is a manual override option that allows the user to look for a specific broadcast channel.

The dual band antenna boasts state-of-the-art technology ensuring “effortless usability and an optimal viewing experience,” the company said.

Combined with Winegard’s state-of-the-art Surface Mount Technology, the Rayzar Automatic’s ultra-low noise amplifier provides optimal signal strength for better picture quality with little-to-no pixilation or picture loss.

The Rayzar Automatic pulls in both VHF and UHF channels.

The Rayzar Automatic is designed and manufactured at the company’s Burlington, Iowa, manufacturing facilities.

The modern-looking Rayzar Automatic measures only 15 1/2 inches in diameter by 7 inches high, weighs a light 4 1/2 pounds, and is easy to install with a simple coax hookup. There is no need to drill a hole in the roof for a crank handle.

A sleek, low-profile dome houses the technology, protecting the hardware from shock, vibration, high humidity, and extreme temperatures.

The U.S. patent-pending Rayzar Automatic comes in black or white for $399 at Camping World Super Centers and RV dealers nationwide. It is expected to begin shipping mid-December.

Date Changes for The Rally (2015)

In an earlier story on Vogel Talks RVing, I reported that The Rally would return for 2015.

2015-Rally-web-banner_AZ-5.7.14Good Sam has recently announced a date change for the upcoming Good Sam Phoenix Rally, which was originally scheduled for March 19 to 22 at the Phoenix International Raceway. The date change comes on the heels of the release of NASCAR’s upcoming 2015 Sprint Cup Series race schedule.

The race schedule, which was released August 26, 2014, outlined that the Phoenix International Raceway requested the race be held at the track on March 15 instead of the original date of March 1. This new date of the Phoenix race affects the scheduled Good Sam Phoenix Rally, and the event has now been advanced to February 26 to March 1, with early bird arrival dates of February 24 and 25.

“With the new date of the NASCAR Phoenix race, we are left with no choice but to advance our event in order to ensure a successful event while considering the planning and logistics of this rally,” said Marcus Lemonis, chairman and CEO of Good Sam.

“We are extremely disappointed with this change and the fact that we were not informed until late August, after we had already published our rally dates in May. We had begun discussions with the track personnel in April and locked in the original dates at that time, while it was not mentioned to our organization that the Phoenix International Raceway was in discussions with NASCAR to change their original scheduled race date.”

The RallyThe Good Sam Club boasts a combined 14 years of experience hosting rally events. Ten days before the attendees arrive, staff are on-site setting up tents, building stages, and laying out the parking site grids, including full electrical hook-ups, for an anticipated 3,000 attendees. For the convenience, safety and security of all those attending, the planning committee expressed concerns that scheduling the event within 3 days of the race would not be sufficient, he explained.

“We are committed to providing our rally-goers the best experience possible with the latest in RV models and outdoor products, new and improved RV and camping seminars and activities, and world-class entertainment,” said Lemonis.

“We want our rally goers to know that if this could have been avoided we would have made other arrangements to alleviate any confusion and inconvenience to our attending members and guests. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our guests.”

Planning an RV Rental Vacation

Recreational vehicles have become one of the most popular ways for Americans and Canadians to travel.

rent an rv
Considering the RV lifestyle? Try renting before laying down the cash. Camping in a rental Class C motorhome at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved

There is no time wasted rushing through the airport and dealing with delays or cancellations. Even with today’s fuel prices, RV travel is still a more economical way for families to travel than staying in hotels and eating in restaurants.

An RV vacation lets you determine your daily itinerary. Stop and stretch when you’re ready; enjoy drinks and snacks when you choose; use your own bathroom when public facilities are unavailable or unsanitary.

An RV vacation offers you the ultimate freedom to travel and explore at your own pace. You have complete control over your destination plans, including when you depart, where you travel, and what you do during your family vacation.

There are many destinations you can go as a family when taking an RV road trip. These types of vacations make it possible for families to enjoy the great outdoors, see historical sites, and spend time together sitting around the campfire. When selecting a destination, it is important to ensure there are ample activities to involve the entire family.

You can tour the continent from the Canadian Rockies to Arizona and from California to Texas, Alabama, and Georgia and everywhere in between.

RV sales continue to be strong. Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) reports that RV manufacturers shipped almost 286,000 vehicles in 2012, with a retail value of more than $10.8 billion.

Thanks to the popularity, RV rentals have also seen a boost.

There’s no better way to try before you buy than by renting an RV. Many people rent RVs simply for a change of pace by taking an RV trip to a special destination or event such as football tailgating or Mardi Gras.

You can rent near home and journey to your destination, or fly and pick up your RV at the other end. More than 460 national chain outlets and local RV dealerships rent RVs, including state-of-the-art, late-model-year units. A growing number of campgrounds offer on-site RV rentals as well.

Selecting the right RV rental company will take considerable research and price comparison. Before choosing a rental company, take time to speak to each company in your area to get a price quote and find out what is included with the rental.

RV rentals are available through both local and national companies. Some of the more popular national RV rental companies include Cruise America, El Monte RV, USA RV Rentals, and Camping World. The major rental companies in Canada include Canadream and Cruise Canada.

Most RV rental companies offer housekeeping packages (dishes, pots, pans, bed linens, etc.) for a nominal fee, or you can bring your own. Even if you’re driving or towing an RV for the first time, features like automatic transmissions, power steering, large external mirrors, and rear view cameras make it easy for experienced drivers to adjust to the difference in length, height, and weight.

Book your RV well in advance, especially if you plan to travel during the summer or on busy holiday weekends such as Memorial Day or Labor Day. These are the busiest times of the year.

Pre-select a few destinations and take a look at your budget. Though the cost of parking the RV for the night is less expensive than staying at a hotel, the costs for fuel and mileage can add up quickly.

Have a destination in mind before calling the RV rental company and ask for a total estimate, including rental fee and average mileage charges. Ask for several different destinations to compare rates and finally pick a location for your vacation.

It is important you understand your rights and responsibilities before signing an RV rental agreement.

When taking delivery of your rented RV, allow ample time to ensure everything is in working order and you are familiar with the operation all major systems including utility hookups (electrical, water, and sewer). Make sure you know how to hook these up before you leave on vacation and all required attachments are supplied. Check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are operational.

Check for any manuals that can help answer questions along the way and look for any noticeable damage. Make sure to point out any damage or missing items to the rental agency before leaving. This way you are not responsible for the items.

Make a check list of everything you need for your RV vacation, including what to bring and what to do before leaving.

Renting an RV is a great way to test drive the RV lifestyle experience.

Worth Pondering…

The attraction of recreational vehicle travel is to see the country, visit new places, meet interesting people, and experience the freedom of the open road.

Tips for Saving Space in Your RV

Organizing your recreational vehicle and saving space goes hand in hand.

Collapsible/compact bowl set from Camping World
Collapsible/compact bowl set from Camping World

Your imagination is the limit!

Set aside a day where you spend the first quarter taking EVERYTHING out of the cabinets and storage areas, the second quarter THINKING about the multi-functions of each item, and the last half of the day STORING and STACKING your chosen items.

Nest, nest, nest. And think vertical storage whenever possible.

Collapsible/compact bowl sets use 2/3 less space than standard bowls. Microwave, freezer, and dishwasher safe these bowls, currently on a Camping World Internet sale, stack on top of each other to save space. Set includes 1.5 cup, 3 cup, and 5 cup bowls with storage lids.

Consider this: Do you absolutely need to hang clothes?

Instead of storing T-shirts on top of each other so that you have to pull out a whole stack to find one shirt, vertically fold them  almost like a bookcase or filing cabinet, so the folded “spines” of the shirts are visible.

This is what a stack of them in a drawer (or a storage box) looks like:

(Source: tumblr.com)
(Source: tumblr.com)

Storage is everywhere including the inside of your oven and microwave.

Also available on an Internet sale from Camping World, the Magma 7 Piece Nesting Cookware Set requires less than a half cubic foot of storage space. Each set includes a 2-quart saucepan with lid, 5-quart stock pot, 10-inch diameter sauté pan/stock pot lid with lids for sauté pan and stock pot, sauce pan removable handle with thumb release trigger, and bungee storage cord.

Canvas Shoe Pockets attach to bed base line to neatly store shoes out of the way. Also a handy storage spot for reading glasses, paperbacks, and TV remote control.

Suction cups are your friend, especially when they come with little hooks set into them. Use suction cups to hang small items like kitchen utensils, towels, sunglasses, and keys.

Adhesive hooks serve a similar function. Use them on the inside of cabinet doors whenever possible.

Pegboards are also RV friendly and can be used in myriad ways.

You can never have too many bungee cords and canopy ball bungees—they’re great for tying kitchen drawers closed as well.

Use suction cups to hang small items
Use suction cups to hang small items.

For the various shelves/long cabinets, can you add baskets/boxes (with or without lids) to hold things.

Don’t just accept the RV floor plan you started with as unchangeable. Almost anything that isn’t an appliance can be unbolted and removed.

Consider hanging organizers off the back of easy chairs and front motorhome seats.

Following are additional RV space saving ideas:

  • Tuck complete sheet sets into the second pillowcase
  • Pack items that serve more than one function, e.g. toaster oven rather than a toaster
  • Use stacking bins for dry goods rather than keeping the original containers
  • Hang a shelf system above your kitchen sink and/or an over-the-sink rack
  • Utilize the inside of your doors
  • Use an over-the-cabinet-door wastebasket
  • Screw jar lids into a cabinet ceiling and using accompanying jars to store small items
  • Install hooks on the sides of your shelves
  • Use Velcro to keep your remotes in place

Worth Pondering…

“Get your motor runnin’
Head out on the highway
Lookin’ for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin’ go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space.”

It could be the theme song of every RVer, though it’s not likely what Steppenwolf had in mind when they recorded Born to be Wild in 1968.

The Rally Returns for 2015

Camping World, the nation’s largest RV and outdoor retailer, and Good Sam, the world’s largest RV owner’s organization, announce the return of The Rally for 2015.

2015-Rally-web-banner_AZ-5.7.14Back by popular demand and bigger than ever before; the Camping World/Good Sam Rally will make its grand re-entrance to the industry in Phoenix, Arizona from March 19 through 22 at the Phoenix International Raceway.

With the tremendous growth the Good Sam Club has experienced over the past few years, expanding to over 1.5 million members in the United States and Canada, attendance at the Rallies has soared as well, limiting the number of locations that can host such a large RV gathering, according to a news release.

“Many Good Sam Club members and RV industry personnel have been inquiring about the absence of the Rally in 2014,” said Marcus Lemonis, Chairman and CEO of Camping World and Good Sam Enterprises.

“In order to continue to provide the best experience to rally-goers, it was necessary to take time to reevaluate our options and search for the right locations to accommodate and meet the growing number of members’ needs for these events,” explains Lemonis.

The March 2015 Camping World/Good Sam Rally location was determined based on the terrific response received from both members and exhibitors and overall success of the event at the previous rally held in Phoenix in 2012.

The 2015 Rally will have even more to offer rally-goers with the latest in RV models and outdoor products, new and improved RV and camping seminars and activities, and world-class entertainment.

The Rally-Small-Screen-Shot-2014-05-08-at-10.21.05-AM“It is our pleasure to facilitate an event that brings together thousands of RV enthusiasts from all over the country to celebrate the RV lifestyle, enjoy fun activities, great food, prizes, and quality time with family and friends,” said Lemonis.

“We are excited to announce the return of America’s largest RV Rally to the RV community.”
