Airstream Interstate Remains Top Selling Class B Motorhome

Jackson Center, Ohio-based Airstream announced the brand’s popular Interstate is the top selling Class B diesel motorhome in the U.S. for the third year in a row, according to Statistical Surveys Inc. Brand Market Share Report, which details total sales of diesel and gas class B models.

In 2014, Airstream Interstate unit sales increased 30.2 percent over 2013—nearly 8 percent higher than the overall B Van segment growth which was up 22.8 percent year over year. The Interstate now has 33.7 percent market share of the diesel class B segment.

“The momentum we have seen over the past three years is incredible,” said Airstream CEO and President Bob Wheeler, in a company news release.

“The collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Airstream combines the best of two iconic and luxurious brands.”

The Airstream Interstate motorhome continues the tradition of extraordinary design and handcrafted quality that has made Airstream the leader in luxury RVs for 83 years. It serves as a fuel-efficient, luxurious and safe way for travelers to explore the open road and includes nearly 50 “Best in Class” features, enhancements, and a renewed commitment to safety and refined luxury.

The Interstate has a starting MSRP of $149,031.

“Interstate continues to lead sales for all Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based platform models in the class B diesel space,” said Justin Humphreys, VP of Sales for Airstream.

“In fact, when looking at the market scope data from Stat Surveys, our Interstate van sold 76 percent more than the top class B gas model. Considering our premium position, this success is extraordinary and is a testament to both industry-leading luxury features combined with the industry’s best dealers.”

Airstream had a record-setting 2014, making it the best-selling year in the company’s 83-year history, and the third year of record sales in a row. The demand for Airstream’s design-driven products led to the company’s largest backlog in more than 30 years and plant expansions for both its van and travel trailer production facilities.

The Airstream Interstate is available in three models: Interstate Lounge XLT (starting at $151,736), Interstate Grand Tour XLT (starting at $151,736), and Interstate Lounge (starting at $149,031)

A fourth touring coach from Airstream, the Autobahn starting at ($134,906), is a luxury van, perfect for corporate travelers who place a premium on productivity, or for family road trippers in search of comfort and relaxation.

Birth of Airstream & Wally Byam

From its humble beginnings, Airstream, manufacturer of the iconic “silver bullet” travel trailer, has become an American icon. But, how did this successful company come about?

Wally Byam pulls his '30s Airstream in a promo.
Wally Byam pulls his ’30s Airstream in a promo.

The history of Airstream is intertwined with the journey of the man who made it all possible—Wally Byam.

A self-made man, Byam was born on July 4, 1896. His love of traveling was deeply engraved upon him throughout extensive travels with his grandfather. During this time, Byam also worked as a shepherd and lived in a two-wheeled shepherd’s cart.

His humble beginnings were by no means a reflection of the successful future that lay ahead, as well as the attention his designs would garner from not only the North American and European public, but also celebrities that include Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey.

Byam decided to step foot into the world of motorhomes because he felt inspired to build his own travel trailer. His first endeavor consisted of writing an article, including plans on how to build a travel trailer for under $100, a mode of new transport, which received considerable attention.

Another factor in Byam’s success was developments in the U.S. during the 1920s. Americans were developing an interest in traveling on the improved road system. With this boom in holiday travel, Byam seized the opportunity by selling his sets of plans for five dollars each. He also started building trailers in his back yard in Los Angeles.

Create only memories with an Airstream

Surviving the big crash of 1926, a year later Byam had abandoned his previous career of advertising and publishing to concentrate on being a full-time builder of Masonite travel trailers and the Airstream Company was subsequently incorporated in 1931.

It was five years later, on 17 January 1936, that the Airstream Trailer Co. released the Clipper and the brand, Airstream, was placed onto the map. The Clipper was of similar design to the Road Chief, a trailer previously designed by former aircraft designer, Hawley Bowlus. However, the Clipper had one distinct difference—the door was positioned on the side.

Able to sleep four comfortably, the Clipper boasted an advanced insulation and ventilation system—unheard of at the time—and sold for $1,200. Despite being of premium price, people bought the Clipper in droves and the subsequent deluge of orders proved to be somewhat problematic.

However, owing to the popularity of the Clipper, Airstream managed to survive the effect of the Great Depression and flourished, whereas the additional 400 plus travel trailer manufacturers became doomed.

Upon America’s involvement in World War II, the price of materials required for travel trailers skyrocketed and leisure travel waned. Airstream closed its doors temporarily and Byam concentrated his efforts on aluminum fabricating in the aircraft industry.

In 1948, following the end of the war, the economy bounced back, as did recreational travel. Byam reopened Airstream and business began to boom. Four years later, the company set up a production facility in Ohio to cater for the eastern market and the Californian factory previously set up was moved to larger facilities to cope with greater demand.

In 1956, Byam traveled to Europe in a Gold Anodized trailer, towed by a Cadillac. It was a successful publicity stunt that saw people take note of the Airstream. Sadly, however, Byam developed a brain tumor six years later and died. The Airstream brand, however, has not.

The luxury recreational vehicle, now owned by Thor Industries, flourishes today with renewed vigor. Due to the increasing popularity of the “silver bullet” trailers numerous Airstream-only RV parks have developed over the years for WBCCI (Wally Byam Caravan Club International) rallies and other Airstream enthusiasts. Scattered throughout the U.S. from Texas to Minnesota (Minnesota Airstream Park), Washington to Florida, and Pennsylvania to Georgia, Airstream owners are welcomed with attractive camping rates.

It’s not just those of us who appreciate the Airstream mystique that have benefited, though. In 1969, following their return from the Moon, the crew of Apollo 11 were quarantined in an airtight Airstream trailer for fear they had also brought back lunar pathogens with them. NASA still incorporates the Airstream into the running of their facilities today and has aptly dubbed the model they use, the Airstream Excella, the Astrovan.

The next time an Airstream zooms by, spare a thought for Wally Byam, the man who started it all. Then head to your nearest Airstream dealer to check out the latest iconic “silver bullet” trailers and the top selling Class B motorhome, the Airstream Interstate.

Airstream and MBCA will lead the creation of a dedicated Airstream owners’ community, supported through partnership in MBCA club events and a variety of co-marketing programs.

Effective June 2014, Airstream will purchase a one-year MBCA membership for every customer who buys a new Airstream Interstate motorhome or Autobahn passenger van, both based on the award-winning Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis.

Airstream will also give current qualifying MBCA Members a $500 discount on the purchase of a new Interstate or Autobahn.

“The values shared by Airstream and Mercedes-Benz have always been clear, but aligning ourselves more closely with such a large and active owners’ group will yield great benefits for all parties,” said Bob Wheeler, Airstream president and CEO, in a company news release.

“We look forward to bringing to life the full potential of this new relationship.”

The MBCA was founded in 1956 and represented a small but growing family of kindred spirits drawn together by a fascination for the engineering and tradition of this luxury German marque – much like Airstream’s Founder Wally Byam and his first caravans.

This type of camaraderie is still at the heart of these two organizations today, added Wheeler.

“We are thrilled to partner with Airstream as we welcome Interstate and Autobahn owners to the MBCA community,” said Terry Kiwala, Mercedes-Benz Club of America national president.

“We look forward to seeing Interstate and Autobahn at events in the U.S. and Canada, which celebrate the heritage of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and we warmly anticipate the start of new and lasting friendships with their enthusiastic owners.”

Airstream first began its partnership with Mercedes-Benz with the launch of the contemporary and sophisticated Airstream Interstate in 2004, which remains the top model in its class for the third year in a row and is built from a bespoke version of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van chassis.

Airstream’s new luxury VIP passenger van, the Autobahn, was launched in early June 2014 and is now available through select Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealers.

More January RV Manufacturer Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently announced four recall notices involving three recreational vehicle/chassis manufacturers—Airstream, Keystone RV Company, Forest River, Inc., and Fleetwood RV.

Airstream

airstream-logoJackson Center, Ohio-based Airstream is recalling potentially 576 units of its model year 2008-2013 Interstate motorhomes manufactured August 2007 through December 2012 and equipped with the rear sofa floor plan, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The electrical equipment underneath the sofa may come in contact with the seat belt buckle or metal cables from the seat.

If the metal sofa components come in contact with the electrical components, electrical arcing could occur. Arcing may lead to a vehicle fire.

Airstream will notify owners, and dealers will install a cover over the electrical components, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin by late January 2013. Owners may contact Airstream at 1-877-596-6111.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Keystone RV Company

Keystone-Rv-Co.-logoGoshen, Indiana-based Keystone RV Company is recalling 191 model year 2012 and 2013 Springdale travel trailers, model 266RLSSRWE, manufactured from October 18, 2011, through December 5, 2012. The suspension may contact the copper propane line for the range.

If the suspension contacts the copper it may damage it, resulting in a propane leak. If the propane leaks in the presence of an ignition source, there is an increased risk of fire and/or explosion, which could cause property damage and/or personal injury.

Keystone will notify owners, and dealers will modify the propane line to route it away from the suspension, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin during early January 2013.

Owners may contact Keystone Customer Service by calling 1-866-425-4369.

Keystone’s recall campaign number is 12-186.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Forest River, Inc.

forest-RiverElkhart, Indiana-based Forest River, Inc. is recalling 451 model year 2010-2012 Berkshire and Charleston diesel motorhomes. The chassis are equipped with connectors for diode jumpers that may come loose, resulting in an open circuit. Two circuits are affected: The one that disengages the cruise control with brake pedal use, and the one that illuminates the brake lights with brake pedal use.

Failure of the cruise control to disengage when the brakes are applied may increase the risk of a vehicle crash. Without the brake lights illuminating when the brakes are applied, the driver’s intent is not communicated, increasing the risk of a crash.

Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) is performing this recall on behalf of Forest River. DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the diode jumpers to make sure they are fully locked in place and will correct the vehicles as needed.

The recall is expected to begin on January 28, 2013.

Owners should contact Daimler Trucks Warranty Campaigns Department at 1-800-547-0712, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time Monday through Friday, or the Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-FTL-HELP after normal business hours.

Daimler’s recall campaign number is FL-634.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

Fleetwood RV

Fleetwood logoFleetwood RV is recalling 14 model year 2012 and 2013 Bounder Classic model 30T motorhomes manufactured from February 17, 2012, through November 30, 2012. The Federal Certification Tag information relating to front and rear tires is incorrect. Due to the inaccurate label, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Part 567, “Certification.”

Owners relying on the information provided on the label may incorrectly inflate their tires, which could contribute to a tire failure that could cause a crash.

Fleetwood RV will mail new federal certification tags to owners. Owners who are not comfortable installing these labels may have them replaced at a dealer, free of charge.

The safety recall is expected to begin in January 2013. Owners may contact Fleetwood RV Owner Relations at 1-800-509-3418.

Fleetwood RV’s safety recall number is 130102FRV.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to safercar.gov.

The Interstate boasts over 50 best-in-class features that distinguish it in the marketplace, according to a news release.

As a result, the Interstate has experienced tremendous growth in the US market, commanding 17 percent market share through the first nine months of 2012.

Interstate sales are up 72 percent year-over-year in the United States, leading Airstream to discuss opportunities for expansion in Canada.

“The Interstate offers a unique blend of luxury, design, and performance that we are confident will do well in the Canadian marketplace,” said Airstream President and CEO Bob Wheeler. “We see tremendous possibility in this region and look forward to a very active spring, when our Canadian customers can hit the open road in the Interstate for the first time.”

Airstream plans to meet with potential Canadian dealers at the 50th annual National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Kentucky, November 27-29.

At the show, the company will also debut a new nine-seat option for the Interstate, at the request of many dealers.

“As a result of our success in the United States, we have had several inquiries from both dealer and retail customers from Canada,” said Airstream General Manager Tim Garner.

“We believe the combination of best in class product with progressive dealer programs will drive similar success in Canada and we look forward to discussing these opportunities with Canadian dealers in Louisville.”
