First introduced as a concept in November 2012, the Land Yacht is the product of an international collaboration between Airstream, Tecnoform S.p.A., maker of fine cabinetry and the design of studio of Officinia Italana Design.

Designed in partnership with Mauro Micheli, the Long time designer for Riva Yachts, the resulting interior is truly yacht-like and incorporates elements from the world’s finest luxury watercraft.

Upon boarding the Airstream Land Yacht, you are struck by the unit’s premier design elements such as boat-deck flooring, LED panel lighting elements, Corian solid surfaces, and plush Italian fabrics that create a sleek and sophisticated look in the cabin. Other notable features of the 28-foot Airstream Land Yacht include:

  • Sleeping room for up to five people, including a bedroom in the front, a bathroom amidships, and a rear social space, which includes a gallery that can be hidden when not in use
  • Power bed lifts that reveals access to hidden storage
  • A power patio awning and powered table pedestal for convenience
  • A quiet ducted air system provides powerful air conditioning to meet internal climate preferences of the user

“Our dealers have long asked for a premium ‘halo’ product for certain discerning clients,” said Airstream CEO and President Bob Wheeler.

“In those same discussions they would often reference yachting and marine design, which were both passions of Airstream founder Wally Byam. The Land Yacht touches on these elements while opening up Airstream to new audiences who have been waiting for such a unique interior specification with a refined design and floor plan.”

Wally Byam’s love for boats drove him to create a parallel experience for adventure travel on land through his legendary Airstream travel trailers. Airstream’s early models had names including Clipper, Liner, Wee Wind, and the Flying Cloud.

In Byam’s later years, he designed and commissioned a custom sailing yacht called the Caravan, and while he did see the finished product, he never had the chance to pilot the ship around the world as planned.

“We believe the Land Yacht provides the brand with a chance to reach beyond the traditional RV channels, and attract a buyer that may have other uses in mind, like a studio, office, or lounge,” said Wheeler.

Airstream’s Land Yacht concept, the subject of a Vogel Talks RV article in March, was first shown in November 2012.

Airstream has produced Land Yachts in the past, including self-propelled motorhomes.

At the time, Airstream said the company hadn’t made a decision to build the 28-foot Land Yacht.

Airstream says Land Yacht production will commence in July due to the phenomenal reception from dealers, tastemakers, and prospective Airstream owners.

Land Yacht pricing will be announced in the coming weeks.

Current Airstream trailers can list for up to $90,000.
