Honey, I Shrunk the House into an RV

Forget Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Instead, think, Honey, I Shrunk the House into an RV.

Jim Turley and Brian Scobey of Signa Tour Campers are constructing homes that are 8 x 24 feet, with less than 300 square feet of living space. It’s all getting done by hand inside of a Hillsborough County (Florida) warehouse, reports ABC Action News.

“People are downsizing their houses, their cars,” said Turley.

“It is a trend. It’s a niche.”

The trend is catching on nationwide. These homes, commonly called tiny homes, are springing up not only in Florida but in places like Washington, Texas, and even New York.

Turley builds his tiny homes on wheels. It qualifies them as an RV, so there is no mortgage.

“No increased property taxes. No permits to build. You basically pull it in and park it,” he explained.

Turley and Scobey are currently constructing a beach house for a Florida couple. It has everything from a bathroom and kitchen to sleeping room for up to five people.

The buyers are also adding a few bells and whistles. There will be a built-in spice rack, solar panels on the roof, and a deck that disassembles should a hurricane come through.

Turley says the couple has picked out drapes, paint color for the house, and even French doors that are equipped with blinds that never need to be cleaned.

These homes are made to order. You can either use your own design or Turley and his partner will let you choose from different models.

“I have one called the Rhode Island,” explained Scobey.

“It is about seven by twelve feet. It is all in one room.”

Each house takes about two months to complete.

The average cost is $25,000.

Fall and Winter Warning about Blacklegged Ticks

An earlier post, Top 10 things RVers Should Know about Ticks, stressed the fact that ticks can be active even in the winter.

Blacklegged ticks or Deer ticks. (Credit: tickencounter.org)
Blacklegged ticks or Deer ticks. (Credit: tickencounter.org)

That’s right! Adult stage blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks) become active every year after the first frost.

They’re not killed by freezing temperatures, and while other ticks enter a feeding diapause as day-lengths get shorter, deer ticks will be active any winter day that the ground is not snow-covered or frozen. This surprises people, especially during a January thaw or early spring day.

Remember this fact and hopefully you’ll never be caught off-guard.

Campers, hikers, and hunters should take special precautions in the woods during fall and winter to avoid this winter-resilient tick that transmits Lyme disease, according the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

“We are trying to make the hunters aware that there are ticks in some of these areas and asking them to check their deer,” said Lindsay Rist, wildlife communication specialist for ODNR.

Two other species of ticks commonly found in Ohio—the American dog tick and the lone star tick—are known to transmit Lyme disease. However, neither of these species has been found to be active in winter.

When Dr. Glen Needham, entomologist at The Ohio State University, received a call that a family in Coshocton County had found a tick on their clothing in January, his interest was piqued.

“Ohio is not supposed to have ticks in January. For this tick, they did not get the memo on good tick behavior,” said Needham.

Needham traveled to the area and found an established population of blacklegged ticks. Since then, an additional 25 Ohio counties have added to the list of those with likely established populations.

For a county to be officially designated as such, they need to meet one of two criteria set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The county needs to have turned in six blacklegged ticks or two blacklegged ticks in different life stages, said Needham.

As part of an annual summary of tick-borne diseases compiled by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) in 2011, the department collected ticks from deer heads donated by hunters in 25 Ohio counties. That project identified 56 blacklegged ticks from Monroe County, 48 from Noble County, 16 from Morgan County, and one from Athens County.

The ODH also collected and identified ticks submitted from various agencies and individuals. Only one blacklegged tick was identified from Washington County in 2011, not enough to qualify it as a county with a likely established population. But not officially qualifying does not mean the ticks are not here, said Needham.

Fact Box

Blacklegged or deer tick

This tiny, dark tick is one of three Lyme disease transmitting tick species found in Ohio.

They are the only Lyme disease transmitting tick that is active in winter.

Only 35 were identified in the 20-year period between 1989 and 2008. Since 2008 that number has been sharply on the rise, with 2,014 found in 2011 alone.

There were 53 cases of Lyme disease reported in Ohio in 2011 and 46 cases reported so far this year, said Lynn Denny, epidemiologist with the Ohio Department of Health.

Precautions

There are several precautions that outdoorsmen and women can take to protect themselves this fall and winter. It is important to make sure all clothing is snuggly tucked in. This will ensure that as little skin as possible is accessible.

Ticks are going to climb up from the bottom until they find skin.

A tick repellent containing permethrin can be purchased at most outdoors stores. The repellent should be used to saturate clothes and given time to dry. It dries odorless and lasts through approximately six washings.

Check that deer carcasses are free of ticks as soon as possible to avoid spreading the ticks to new locations.

If sick, remember to tell your physician of possible exposure to ticks.

For more information on identifying, preventing, and removing ticks, visit the ODNR resource page.

Worth Pondering…

I tried real hard to play golf, and I was so bad at it they would have to check me for ticks at the end of the round because I’d spent about half the day in the woods.

Elkhart, Indiana-based Thor Motor Coach introduces a new redesigned and bolder Outlaw toy hauler motorhome following the success of the 37LS model earlier this year.

Thor Motor Coach Outlaw Class A toy hauler motorhome

Joining the Outlaw’s posse at the National RV Trade Show, November 27-29 in Louisville, Kentucky is the all-new 37MD.

The new model provides even more storage and sleeping capacity along with the most flexible hauling options in this very popular toy hauling Class A motorhome, according to a Thor news release.

The 37MD features a second slide room, which is dual-purposed as a second living area or dedicated bedroom. This functionality is the result of input from consumers looking to own a motorized toy hauler for hauling people and toys, but also wanting to have a motorhome that can be converted for full-time camping.

The 37MD exterior provides large, side-opening, storage compartments, full body paint packages, and separate entries for the living room and garage.

An exterior fueling station can be used to fill-up ATVs and dirt bikes, while outside entertainment options include garage radio controls, wall-mounted marine grade speakers, and a 32-inch LCD TV located under the patio awning.

Features inside the coach include Leatherette seating surfaces, solid surface kitchen countertop, 30-inch over-the-range convection microwave, and easy-clean vinyl flooring throughout the entire coach.

A new optional overhead bunk bed is located above the cockpit for added sleeping flexibility. The second living room/bedroom has a convertible sofa that makes into a queen sized air bed with a loft area for kids or storage.

A sliding glass door separates the garage from the front of the coach and includes a powered shade for privacy.

Transform the Outlaw into the hottest hangout in the campground by turning the garage and ramp door into a place for entertaining with the optional ‘Party Deck’. This patio railing system allows a veranda off the rear of the coach, while optional fold-down sofas will accommodate seating for six inside the garage or be converted in beds.

TrailManor Introduces Three New Models

Jacksboro, Tennessee-based TrailManor Manufacturing Co. LLC introduces three new folding hard-wall trailer models.

The TrailManor 2922 models are based on the company’s best-selling 2720 line, with the addition of a king-size rear bed.

The 29-foot trailers are offered in configurations including front and rear beds; a front slide out model with sofabed; and a front slide out model with a dinette.

“RV buyers have been trending toward larger beds for several years, and TrailManor dealers have received lots of requests for a king bed in smaller models,” noted Cleo Eickhoff, vice president of marketing for TrailManor, in a news release.

“Last year, we addressed this by offering a king bed in our 2417 Sport model. Now, we’re giving dealers three new king bed models at highly desirable price points.”

TrailManor 2922 travel trailer

TrailManor’s entire lineup features hard-wall travel trailers that fold down like tent campers for easy towing. The company said that it takes about one extra gallon of gas to tow a TrailManor trailer 100 miles.

A TrailManor trailer sets up in less than two minutes and owners don’t even have to unhitch. Inside, TrailManors are equipped with the amenities of upscale travel trailers, including a full kitchen, a hard-wall bath with shower and tub, plenty of storage, and ample living space.

According to a news release, these brands/manufacturers received at least 15 dealer responses and scored 80 percent or above for overall dealer satisfaction in the association’s 19th Annual Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey.

“The DSI Quality Circle Award recognizes the high level of success these manufacturers have had in working with their dealer business partners,” said RVDA Chairman Jeff Hirsch of Kingston, New Hampshire-based Campers Inn.

“Their commitment to continuously improving products and services ultimately helps dealers serve customers better and preserves our industry’s share of consumers’ discretionary dollars.”

The 19th Annual DSI survey was conducted between April and July 2012.

Four hundred and sixty-one dealers responded to the DSI this year and provided 2,709 brand ratings, an average of nearly six per dealer.

A summary of the DSI survey aggregate results will appear in the November issue of RV Executive Today.
