Meet the Colim: Colors of Life in Motion

Facing the dilemma of whether to buy a new motorhome and toad, truck and fifth-wheel trailer, or SUV and trailer/caravan?

There could be another option available in the near future.

The brain child of German designer Christian Susana, the futuristic looking Colim (an acronym meaning Colors of Life in Motion) is an attractive combination of car and a caravan camper—the perfect example of an intelligent motorhome design.

The outer appearance is very simple yet aerodynamic. It may not have all the bells and whistles of today’s monstrous Diesel Pushers, but it makes up for that with one significant amenity: the detachable front part of the cockpit is actually a separate vehicle that can be driven away while the rest of the motorhome remains at the campsite.

The detachable vehicle seats two people, and bears an amazing resemblance to the tiny smart cars that cruise around town.

The Colim appears ready to launch into space at any moment, and it’s safe to say anyone driving it would turn heads everywhere they went.

Appearing far different from other cars on the street, it almost looks more like an escape pod from a space shuttle than an actual car. The roof slopes downward towards the back of the car, and a major part of the body is comprised of windows. The wheels are solid white which adds to the interesting look of this design.

Dubbed a ‘lifestyle motorhome’, the usable living area is flexible, with individually applicable multi function modules and offering the ability to customize its four mobile walls to fit a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and seating area.

This flexibility is not limited to the living area, but also features in the cockpit.

The combined vehicle’s top speed of 90 mph blows most RVs out of the water.

Design wise the Colim resembles a geometric shape—the designer has explored the possibility of using different shapes which could pave the way for better shaped cars in the future.

“The Colim concept—an acronym meaning ‘colors of life in motion’—is an intelligent mobility concept which stretches primarily the bridge between caravans, camper, lifestyle, and business. Dubbed a ‘lifestyle motorhome’, the cockpit can be disconnected from the usable living space, according to the designer.

“The livable area is flexible, with individually applicable multi function modules. Designed for two people (maximum four persons), the motorhome offers the possibility to personalize its four mobile ‘walls’ according to the present life situation of the user. This flexibility is not only limited to the living area, but also features in the cockpit.”

For now, the Colim is only a concept, but Susana says he’s shopping around for a company that would be willing to manufacture it.

Worth Pondering…

Get your motor runnin’
Head out on the highway
Lookin’ for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin’ go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space.
