Thor Motor Coach #1…and Still Growing

Thor Motor Coach continues as the #1 retailing brand of motorhomes in North America with 22.93% share through June 2011 according to Statistical Surveys.  The results also show Thor Motor Coach as the fastest growing motorhome brand among the top eight major manufacturers with a 27.9% increase over last year.  Class C sales captured the #1 market position with an impressive market share growth of 31.50% compared to the previous year, according to a recent (September 12) company news release.

“Packing in features that include camper favorites like mega-storage compartments, single step entrances, and molded fiberglass front caps have helped us solidify our dedication to the Class C market.  Over the past six months we have introduced several new floor plans that integrate features making the coach even more livable,” affirmed Mike Savage, Thor Motor Coach’s Class C Product Manager.

With 22.9% market share growth over last year, Thor Motor Coach experienced the largest increase for Class A motorhomes within the top eight manufacturers. Over the last few months retail customers have responded well to the addition of several impressive new features on the Hurricane and Challenger lines, the redesign of the Tuscany, and several new floor plans on the Windsport, Serrano, and A.C.E. lines.

“Our continued focus on what retail customers’ desire helps us to bring innovative floor plans with intelligent features to the market.  Our after the sale support programs like Concierge Connection and Rapid Response Parts along with the stability of a strong and financially sound company are added reasons consumers continue to display their confidence in our products,” stated Dana Simon, Vice President of Sales.

Thor Industries, Inc. was founded on August 29, 1980, when Wade F.B. Thompson and Peter B. Orthwein acquired Airstream. The name “Thor” combined the first two letters of each entrepreneur’s last name.

In 1991 Thor acquired Dutchmen Manufacturing, now one of the leading brands of travel trailers and fifth wheels. Four Winds International, manufacturer of Class A and Class C motorhomes, was acquired in 1992. Komfort Corporation, builder of trailers and fifth wheels, became part of the growing Thor family in 1995. 1996 saw the start-up of Thor California.

When Thor joined forces with Keystone RV in 2001, the company achieved an unprecedented dominance within the RV industry. With the acquisition in 2003 of Damon, manufacturer of Class A motorhomes, and Breckenridge, builder of park trailers, and the addition of Crossroads RV in 2004, this dominance was complete.

Finally, in September 2010, Thor made its largest acquisition to date when it purchased Heartland RV, further cementing its position as the world’s largest producer of towable RVs.
